    Abstract:

    The paper presents the results of an investigation on daily activity-travel scheduling behaviour of older people by using an advanced econometric model and a household travel survey, collected in the National Capital Region (NCR) of Canada in 2011. The activity-travel scheduling model considers a dynamic Time–space constrained scheduling process. The key contribution of the paper is to reveal daily activity-travel scheduling behaviour through a comprehensive econometric framework. The resulting empirical model reveals many behavioural details. These include the role that income plays in moderating out-of-home Time Expenditure choices of older people. Older people in the highest and lowest income categories tend to have lower variations in Time Expenditure choices than those in middle-income categories. Overall, the Time Expenditure choices become more stable with increasing age, indicating that longer activity durations and lower activity frequency become more prevalent with increasing age. Daily activity type and location choices reveal a clear random utility-maximizing rational behaviour of older people. It is clear that increasing spatial accessibility to various activity locations is a crucial factor in defining daily out-of-home activity participation of older people. It is also clear that the diversity of out-of-home activity type choices reduces with increasing age and older people are more sensitive to auto travel Time than to transit or non-motorized travel Time.

    Abstract:

    The paper presents an investigation of the temporal transferability of activity generation process models. Three repeated cross-sectional household travel survey data sets collected in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area in the years 2001, 2006, and 2011 are used for the investigation. A multiple discrete-continuous extreme value model is used to develop an activity-travel generation model and separate models are estimated for non-workers and workers. Models are developed for individual years and then for the pooled data set of three cross-sectional years to develop a Meta model of activity generation processes. Individual year-specific models are used to increase knowledge about the temporal stability of different parameters of the model so that the Meta model could capture the non-linear evolution of some key parameters of the model. The dynamics of activity scheduling process are modeled by considering the history of activity participation as well as changes in Time budget availability over the day. For empirical application, the model is estimated for weekend activity scheduling using a dataset (CHASE) collected in Toronto in 2002–2003. The data set classifies activities into nine general categories. For the empirical model of a 24-h weekend activity scheduling, only activity type and Time Expenditure choices are considered. The estimated empirical model captures many behavioral details and gives a high degree of fit to the observed weekend scheduling patterns. Some examples of such behavioral details are the effects of Time of the day on activity type choice for scheduling and on the corresponding Time Expenditure; the effects of travel Time requirements on activity type choice for scheduling and on the corresponding Time Expenditure, etc. Among many other findings, the empirical model reveals that on the weekend the utility of scheduling Recreational activities for later in the day and over a longer duration of Time is high.     This paper uses the Kuhn-Tucker demand system modeling technique to investigate the capacity of a typical week in capturing rhythms in activity-travel behavior. It considers all possible activity types within a weeklong modeling Time frame. Complex interactions in Time Expenditure between at-home and out-of-home activities and among different outof- home activities are captured by introducing behavioral elements in the model in terms of baseline preference, Time translation, and satiation effects. The Kuhn-Tucker demand system model used in this paper is a random utility maximization model with the inherent assumption that every individual maximizes total utility in allocating Time to the activities under consideration within the modeling Time frame.     In this study, data stemming from the 2010 Belgian National Household Travel Survey were used to assess the effect of a traveler’s nationality on daily travel Time Expenditure. Negative binomial (zero-inflated) models were estimated to isolate the effect of nationality after other contributing factors such as sociodemographics, residential characteristics, transport options, and temporal characteristics were controlled for. The results indicate that even if one controls for a series of other influencing factors, nationality plays a significant role in differences in travel Time Expenditure. This finding is especially relevant in the development of policy packages that are targeted at social inequalities. From a methodological perspective, methodological options—two weighting schemes and two bootstrap solutions—were presented to provide sufficient support for the conclusions.     Abstract:

    The impact of public holidays on the underlying reasons for travel behavior, namely, the activities people perform and the trips made, is seldom investigated. Therefore, the effect of holidays on travel Time Expenditure in Flanders, differentiated by trip motive, is examined. The data used for the analysis stem from a household travel survey carried out in 2000. The zero-inflated Poisson regression approach is used; it explicitly takes into account the inherent contrast between travelers and nontravelers. The zero-inflated Poisson regression models yield findings that are harmonious with international literature: socio-demographic variables, temporal effects, and transportation preferences contribute significantly to unraveling the variability of travel behavior. In particular, it is shown that the effect of public holidays on daily travel behavior cannot be ignored. Triangulation of quantitative and qualitative techniques is a solid basis for insight into the underpinnings of travel behavior.

    To improve methods of evaluating the benefits from investments in the transport infrastructure, this paper attempts to develop a method for capturing changes in variations in travel Time Expenditure and shows empirical results from data from the German Mobility Panel, a multiday and multiperiod panel survey. The proposed methodology can simultaneously and explicitly deal with changes and variations. The empirical analysis indicates that over Time, travel Time Expenditures become more dependent on situational attributes than on individual or household attributes; such dependence implies that travel Time Expenditures change toward diversification and that longer periods of behavioral observation to describe people's travel Time Expenditures become more important.
