LuftAbstract:We examined the value of transferrin concentrations in estimating nutritional status as determined by the subjective global assessment (SGA) score. Fifty-nine hemodialysis patients (37 men and 22 women, aged 59 ± 16 years, dialyzed for 3.6 ± 3.9 years) were selected by predetermined criteria. All received erythropoietin (EPO) and oral iron therapy. SGA evaluation was conducted twice by both a dietitian and a physician. Serum iron, Total Iron-Binding Capacity (TIBC; which is linearly correlated with transferrin), transferrin saturation ratio, ferritin, albumin, Total protein, and cholesterol were measured. Twenty-seven (46%) patients were well nourished (group A), 20 (34%) were moderately nourished (group B), and 12 (20%) were poorly nourished (group C) according to the SGA. Immunochemical Determination of Serum Transferrin: Reference Values, Correlation with Serum Total Iron-Binding Capacity and Value in the Diagnosis of Iron Deficiency Anaemia and Anaemia of Chronic Disorders

A good correlation between serum transferrin and Total Iron-Binding Capacity values was found. In 2 groups of anaemic patients - 51 patients with iron deficiency anaemia and 45 patients with anaemia of chronic disorders - serum transferrin determination distinguishes the two groups of anaemic patients from normals somewhat better than TIBC determination.

Levels of Serum Iron, Total Iron Binding Capacity, Transferrin Saturation Fraction and Packed Cell Volume of Blood Donors in Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria

Isong, Mh EtukudoAbstract:The purpose of this study was to determine the serum iron and Total iron binding Capacity, transferrin saturation fraction and packed cell volume of blood donors in University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar. Serum iron concentration (SI), Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC), Transferrin Saturation Fraction (TSF) and Packed Cell Volume (PCV) showed mean values of 16.60±2.93umol/l, 62.20±4.02umol/l, 27.20±3.00% and 0.398±.030l/l respectively for the blood donors. These values were not significantly (p>05) different from that reported for the control subjects (Serum Iron, 17.50±1.80umol/l. Total Iron Binding Capacity, 61.70±3.43umol/l, Transferrin Saturation Fraction, 28.60±3.37% and Pack Cell Volume 0.410±0.37 l/l respectively). However, the Sl, 16.60±2.93umol/l, TSF, 27.20±3.00% and PCV 0.398+0.30l/l respectively of blood donors from Calabar in South-Eastern part of Nigeria were significantly (p>0.50) lower than values obtained from Ibadan (Sl, 19.06±1.00umol/l, TSF, 35.10±1.90%, PCV, 0.451±.068l/l) in South-Western part of Nigeria. Age did not significantly (p>0.05) influence the levels of Sl, TIBC, TSF and PCV of the donors and controls in this study. From this study it is observed that there may be regional differences in the iron parameters suggesting regular nutritional education for the donors on the importance of improving their nutritional status.

Comparative Study of Serum Iron, Total Iron Binding Capacity and Transferrin Saturation Fraction Levels in Two Groups of Nigerians in Different Socio-Economic Classes

Okpokam, Mh EtukudoAbstract:An analysis of serum iron concentration, Total Iron-Binding Capacity and transferrin saturation fraction using standard procedures on apparently healthy adults, 100 males and 100 females revealed the following: (1) A high degree of variability exists within our adults’ serum iron, Total Iron-Binding Capacity and transferrin saturation fraction whether in rural or urban areas. (2) The analysis of the data for sex differences showed that the adult males have higher serum iron levels, slightly lower Total Iron-Binding capacities and greater transferrin saturation fraction levels than in the females. (3) Age at this period does not exert any significant influence on these iron parameters in adult life for both sexes. This work has shown that the levels of serum iron, Total iron binding Capacity and transferrin saturation fraction in adults living in Calabar were higher than those in Ekori, both in Cross River state It is desired that further studies in the normal variability of these parameters in other parts of Nigeria be carried out.

The present research was an attempt to determine the synergistic effect of Galacto Oligosaccharides and iron fortificants on serum iron, serum ferritin, serum transferrin and Total iron binding Capacity in anemic rats. To serve the purpose, eight different types of fortified feed were prepared with varying concentrations of Iron Fortificants (NaFeEDTA and FeSO4) while the varying dosage of galacto oligosaccharides was dissolved separately in water to be fed to anemic rats. Afterwards, animal trials were conducted for twelve weeks to determine the efficacy of Galacto Oligosaccharides & iron fortificants based feed against the aforementioned parameters. The results of the study suggested that both serum iron and serum ferritin levels were significantly improved when anemic rats were fed with iron and Galacto Oligosaccharides fortified feed. It was also observed that the levels of serum transferrin and Total iron binding Capacity steadily decreased over the study duration. It can be concluded that Galacto Oligosaccharides helped enhance the absorption of iron in anemic rats, reflected by increase in serum iron and serum ferritin levels and decrease in serum transferrin and Total iron binding Capacity.
