Residents’ Attitudes towards Sustainable Tourism Development in a Historical-Cultural Village: Influence of Perceived Impacts, Sense of Place and Tourism Development Potential

Residents’ perception of sustainable Tourism Development potential, sense of place, perceived Tourism impacts, and Tourism Development support were involved in this study. A total of 331 completed questionnaire surveys were collected in Luozhou, a historical-cultural village in China. The empirical data were analyzed using a structural equation modeling (SEM) technique, and the results revealed that perceived collective benefits had a significant positive effect on Tourism Development support, whereas the other three perceived impacts’ influence were not significant. The relationship between residents’ sense of place and perceived collective and personal benefits, perceived personal costs and Tourism Development support, were significant. Additionally, residents’ perceptions of Tourism Development potential had a significant influence on perceived impact and Tourism Development support except for perceived personal benefits. Some practical implications of those findings for Tourism planning and Development are also discussed.

The purpose of the paper is to examine attitudes of residents of two of its towns toward Tourism Development. Factor analysis of scaled items measuring their attitudes resulted in seven Tourism-related factors: social interaction with tourists, beneficial cultural influences, welfare impacts, negative interference in daily life, economic costs, sexual permissiveness, and perception of crowding. Results indicate residents’ expectations from Tourism Development were not met and also individuals working in related businesses have negative attitudes toward the industry.

This research analyzes rural residents’ perceptions of the impact of Tourism Development and examines the factors that influence the support for sustainable Tourism Development in the region of Nord-Vest in Romania. Residents’ perceptions towards Tourism Development were measured using 22 items, while their support for Tourism Development was determined using 8 items. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. Principal component analysis grouped the first 22 variables into 4 factors, and the following 8 variables into 2 factors (sustainable Development, destination Development). Findings indicate that residents see Tourism as a Development factor. The natural, economic, and social-cultural environment as well as infrastructure, age, gender and education are factors that influence the sustainable Development of Tourism.

For sustainable Tourism Development to be successful stakeholders must be involved in the process. The questions that should be considered though are: (1) who should be considered stakeholders in Tourism Development, and (2) how should planners and developers involve stakeholders in the Development of Tourism? In order to provide answers to these questions this paper investigated sustainable Tourism Development and how stakeholder inclusion and involvement are incorporated in the basic concept of sustainable Tourism Development. This investigation was accomplished by reviewing and drawing conclusions from the literature. The discussion includes thoughts from both management and public participation perspectives. So who should be involved in the sustainable Tourism Development process? Based on the definitions that are used for sustainability and sustainable Tourism four distinct groups are identified; the present visitors, future visitors, present host community, and future host community.
