    Abstract The use of Bluetooth technology as a technique to collect data about the movement of individuals is increasingly gaining attention. This paper explores the potential of sequence alignment methods to analyse data obtained from Bluetooth tracking. To this end, an empirical case study is elaborated which applies sequence alignment methods to examine the behavioural patterns of visitors tracked by Bluetooth at a major Trade Fair in Belgium. The results and findings underline the validity of Bluetooth tracking to collect data from visitors at mass events, as well as the ability of sequence alignment methods to extract insightful information from sequences within such data.

  • Enhancing Project-Based Learning Through Student and Industry Engagement in a Video-Augmented 3-D Virtual Trade Fair

    Abstract:

    Project-based learning is a widely used pedagogical strategy in engineering education shown to be effective in fostering problem-solving, design, and teamwork skills. There are distinct benefits to be gained from giving students autonomy in determining the nature and scope of the projects that they wish to undertake, but a lack of expert guidance and of a clear direction at the outset can result in confusion, frustration, and unfulfilled goals. Moreover, engineering schools face the imperative of providing students with opportunities to engage with industry during their courses, which can be difficult to accomplish due to logistical and time constraints. This paper reports on a case study in which undergraduate students of electrical, computer, mechatronics, and telecommunications engineering interacted with representatives from industry to obtain feedback at the inception phase of their design projects. Students pitched their ideas to the industry guests at a virtual “Trade Fair” held within a hybrid video conferencing and three-dimensional (3-D) virtual world environment, in preparation for the assessable pitches that they had to deliver on campus to a faculty audience. Survey and assessment results attest to the participants' satisfaction as well as to the effectiveness of the approach in improving student self-efficacy and performance. The paper concludes with recommendations for engineering educators looking to implement similar initiatives and a brief outline of the authors' plans for the future.

    Abstract:

    Sammanfattning För svenska företag blir hållbarhetsfrågor, sustainability, allt viktigare. Idag är det inte längre en fråga om företag ska arbeta med det utan hur. Ett av de viktigaste verktygen för att kunna bedöma ett företags miljöpåverkan är livscykelanalys (Life Cycle Assessment, LCA). Det är en metod där man studerar miljöpåverkan av en produkt eller process genom hela dess livscykel. Om ett företag gör förbättring hos en produkt eller process med hjälp av LCA finns det ett stort intresse i att kunna kommunicera det till marknaden. Tyvärr är LCA idag inte en helt objektiv metod och företag kan välja att kommunicera sina produkters och processers LCA-resultat på ett godtyckligt sätt. Med ett ökat krav från samhället och marknaden borde vi vara på väg mot ett mer standardiserat sätt att utföra LCA-analyser. Något som skulle göra LCA till ett konkurrensverktyg för företag. Det mest rättvisande sättet att kommunicera LCA-resultat är genom en miljövarudeklaration (Environmental Product Declaration, EPD). Ett system som inte används i så stor uträckning. Syftet med detta arbete är att hitta potentialer för hur tillverkande företag kan använda sig av LCA för att stärka sin konkurrenskraft. Frågeställningen som arbetet strävar efter att besvara är: Var finns de störta potentialerna för ett tillverkningsföretag att använda LCA som ett konkurrensverktyg? Arbetet består av både teoretiskt och empiriskt material. Det empiriska materialet har hämtats från intervjuer och ett studiebesök på en fackmässa. För att få olika synvinklar har både ett företag och en forskare intervjuats. Teorin jämförs med intervjumaterialet för att kunna besvara frågeställningen. Arbetet visar att den största potentialen finns i att aktivt arbeta med LCA och höja kunskapsnivån inom företaget. Detta uppfylls bäst genom att utföra seriösa LCA på sina produkter, gärna med oberoende expertis, och göra resultatet förståeligt och kommunicerbart för sina säljare så att slutkundens medvetandegrad ökar och därmed drivkraften att välja hållbara produkter. För att kunna öka trovärdigheten i resultaten bör EPD-systemet användas när man vill kommunicera det till marknaden. Därmed skapas en konkurrensfördel gentemot de företag vars organisation och produkter inte når samma nivå ur ett hållbarhetsperspektiv. Att ligga i framkant inom detta område kommer ge en konkurrensfördel då marknaden ställer allt högre krav.Abstract The importance of sustainability among Swedish companies is growing. There is no longer a question of if companies will do it but how. One of the most important tools to estimate the environmental impacts of a company is Life Cycle Assessment, LCA. It’s a method where the whole life cycle of a product is examined by its environmental effects. There is an increased interest for the companies that work with LCA within a product or process to communicate the results to the market. LCA is unfortunately not a complete objective method and companies can choose to communicate their products and processes in an arbitrarily way. An increased demand from society and the market should lead to a more standardized way of carrying out LCA. Consequently it could make it more accessible for companies to use LCA as a tool to achieve competitive advantage. The most reliable approach to communicate results from LCA is by using Environmental Product Declaration, EPD. A system not used to its full extent among companies today. The purpose of this project is to identify the potentials of how companies can use LCA to strengthen their competitive advantage. The main question the project aims to answer is: What are the greatest potentials for a manufacturing company to use LCA as a tool to strengthen their competitive advantages? The project consists of theoretical and empirical material where the empiric material has been collected from interviews and study visit at a Trade Fair. One company and a scientist have been interviewed to attain different perspectives. A comparison between the theoretical- and empirical material is the foundation to answer the question. This project shows that the greatest potential is achieved by actively working with LCA and increase the level of knowledge within the company. This can be attained by performing serious LCA on their products, preferably with an objective expert, and create understandable and communicable results for salespeople and henceforth increase customers incentive to make sustainable choices. Using the EPD-system will contribute to reliable market communication. A company in a front position within this area will gain competitive advantages, compared to competing companies, when the demand from the market is increased
