  • Crossing the border in visual arts and literature : a transmedial analysis between an outline of Don't Cross the Bridge Before You Get to the River by Francis Alys and Senales que precederan al fin del mundo by Yuri Herrera
    'Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona', 2020
Co-Authors: De Maeseneer Rita, Schoups Marie
    Abstract:

In the huge production of border arts, we propose a transmedial comparison between an outline of Francis Alys' project Don't Cross the Bridge Before You Get to the River (2008) and Yuri Herrera's novel Sings Preceding the End of the World (2009). Based on Deleuzian concepts of re-/deterritorialization, we argue that both artists question the traditional version of the fixed border as well as the more Utopian Vision of the fluid border. The destabilization of spatial, ontological and linguistic levels presents borders as imaginary constructions that try to impose fixed structures on a dynamic reality

  • Cruzar la frontera en las artes visuales y la literatura : una comparación entre un esbozo de Don't Cross the Bridge Before You Get to the River de Francis Alÿs y Señales que precederán al fin del mundo de Yuri Herrera
    'Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona', 2020
    Co-Authors: De Maeseneer Rita
    Abstract:

In the huge production of border arts, we propose a transmedial comparison between an outline of Francis Alÿs' project Don't Cross the Bridge Before You Get to the River (2008) and Yuri Herrera's novel Sings Preceding the End of the World (2009).

  • Utopia and ideology in cultural dynamics
Current Opinion in Behavioral Sciences, 2020
Co-Authors: Yoshihisa Kashima, Julian W. Fernando
    Abstract:

Utopia is a culturally constructed Vision of an ideal human condition. Although its contents vary cross-culturally, Utopian Visions exist across cultures and therefore Utopian thinking is a widespread human proclivity. When activated, a Utopian Vision can engage citizens with their on-going societal processes by activating a motivation to criticize and change the status quo, but may also disengage them from their society, enticing them to wallow in their impossible dream. Utopias animate cultural dynamics – the formation, maintenance, and transformation of culture over time – as a critical part of humanity’s effort to collectively self-regulate our construction of society.

  • another 25 years of aied challenges and opportunities for intelligent educational technologies of the future
International Journal of Artificial Intelligence in Education, 2016
    Co-Authors: Niels Pinkwart
    Abstract:

This paper attempts an analysis of some current trends and future developments in computer science, education, and educational technology. Based on these trends, two possible future predictions of AIED are presented in the form of a Utopian Vision and a dystopian Vision. A comparison of these two Visions leads to seven challenges that AIED might have to face in the future: intercultural and global dimensions, practical impact, privacy, interaction methods, collaboration at scale, effectiveness in multiple domains, and the role of AIED in educational technology. The paper discusses these challenges and the associated risks and opportunities.
