  • from nascar condominiums to private mausoleums keeping the Vacation Home in the family
    Social Science Research Network, 2012
    Co-Authors: Wendy S Goffe
    Abstract:

As the proportion of wealth invested in family recreational property increases, issues relating to keeping the property in the family take on a new significance for estate planners. Deep feelings come to the surface when family members are forced to deal with questions about how to share the responsibilities and the benefits of ownership. This presentation examines the reasons that the family cabin (of any value) is so important in our society, the types of conflicts that arise when families try to hold onto property, methods for transferring ownership to charity and the next generation, and finally methods of management and organization to maintain family harmony once the property has been passed down.

    Abstract:

As the proportion of wealth invested in family recreational property increases, issues relating to keeping the property in the family take on a new significance for estate planners. Deep feelings come to the surface when family members are forced to deal with questions about how to share the responsibilities and the benefits of ownership. This article outlines some of the estate planning tools for transferring these properties, followed by a brief discussion of some unusual transfer issues: cabins in British Columbia; and cabins on U.S. public land. Transferring the property is relatively easy, compared to maintaining harmony among its owners following the transfer. The next generation must determine how it will be maintained, how taxes, insurance, and maintenance will be paid for, and how its use will be divided among the family members, to name only a few of the issues that may arise. This article also examines methods of management and organization, which are critical to accomplishing this more daunting task.

  • the influence of Vacation Home rentals on neighborhood crime and disorder
American Journal of Criminal Justice, 2021
    Co-Authors: Daniel Reinhard
    Abstract:

This study examines the association between Vacation Home rentals (VHR) and residential burglary, disturbances, and substance crimes from social disorganization and routine activity perspectives. Airbnb and crime data for 2018 in Austin, Texas, were analyzed spatially and with multivariate count regression models. Census block groups were used as the unit of analysis (N = 602). Other variables considered include socio-demographic variables, a spatial lag, and bar and nightclub locations. Negative binomial regression analyses revealed VHR properties to be significantly and negatively associated with residential burglary, substance crimes, and disturbances when the rental was the entire structure; however, VHR properties were associated with all crime types in a significant and positive manner when the rental was only for an individual room in the property. This is the second study to find negative associations between entire structure VHRs and crime, though this study varies from others in several aspects. VHRs do not appear to contribute to crime in all circumstances, and listing type matters. However, this is a newer research topic and future studies would benefit from using longitudinal methods, addressing the temporal order of VHR properties and crime in neighborhoods, as well as considering property management characteristics.
