Rest improves performance, nature improves happiness: Assessment of break periods on the abbreviated Vigilance Task.

HeltonAbstract:The abbreviated Vigilance Task can quickly generate Vigilance decrements, which has been argued is due to depletion of cognitive resources needed to sustain performance. Researchers suggest inclusion of rest breaks within Vigilance Tasks improve overall performance (Helton & Russell, 2015; Ross, Russell, & Helton, 2014), while different types of breaks demonstrate different effects. Some literature suggests exposure to natural movements/stimuli helps restore attention (Herzog, Black, Fountaine, & Knotts, 1997; Kaplan, 1995). Participants were randomly assigned to one experimental condition: dog video breaks, robot video breaks, countdown breaks or continuous Vigilance. We assessed Task performance and subjective reports of stress/workload. The continuous group displayed worst performance, suggesting breaks help restore attention. The dog videos did not affect performance, however, decreased reports of distress. These results support the importance of rest breaks and acknowledge the benefit of natural stimuli for promoting wellbeing/stress relief, overall suggesting performance and wellbeing may be independent, which warrants future studies.

A new semantic Vigilance Task: Vigilance decrement, workload, and sensitivity to dual-Task costs

HeltonAbstract:Cognitive resource theory is a common explanation for both the performance decline in Vigilance Tasks, known as the Vigilance decrement, and the limited ability to perform multiple Tasks simultaneously. The limited supply of cognitive resources may be utilized faster than they are replenished resulting in a performance decrement, or may need to be allocated among multiple Tasks with some performance cost. Researchers have proposed both domain-specific, for example spatial versus verbal processing resources, and domain general cognitive resources. One challenge in testing the domain specificity of cognitive resources in Vigilance is the current lack of difficult semantic Vigilance Tasks which reliably produce a decrement. In the present research, we investigated whether the Vigilance decrement was found in a new abbreviated semantic discrimination Vigilance Task, and whether there was a performance decrement in said Vigilance Task when paired with a word recall Task, as opposed to performed individually. As hypothesized, a Vigilance decrement in the semantic Vigilance Task was found in both the single-Task and dual-Task conditions, along with reduced Vigilance performance in the dual-Task condition and reduced word recall in the dual-Task condition. This is consistent with cognitive resource theory. The abbreviated semantic Vigilance Task will be a useful tool for researchers interested in determining the specificity of cognitive resources utilized in Vigilance Tasks.

Passive perceptual learning versus active searching in a novel stimuli Vigilance Task.

HeltonAbstract:A criticism of laboratory Vigilance or sustained attention research is the employment of static monotonous Tasks with repetitive targets as opposed to the use of dynamic Tasks with novel target stimuli. Unfortunately dynamic Tasks employing novel stimuli may result in the mixture of two cognitive processes: active sustained attention search and passive perceptual learning. Moreover, the relative engagement of these two processes may depend on individual differences. In the present study, we examined this by having participants perform a dynamic auditory Vigilance Task with rare novel targets. In addition, some participants performed this Task while also performing a secondary motor tracking Task, a dual-Task scenario. In the dual-Task scenario, participants who failed to accurately detect the first target stimuli showed improvements in their tracking performance with time-on-Task, suggesting reserves of attention. This improvement in tracking performance was not evident for those who accurately detected the first target stimuli, as their attention was likely actively engaged (searching). In addition, participants in the dual-Task scenario who accurately detected the first target stimuli reported high workload and increased post-Task tense arousal, results characteristic of participants performing static Vigilance Tasks. These results indicate the possibility that in a dynamic Vigilance Task with novel target stimuli participants may diverge in how they approach the Task. Some participants will actively monitor the display for targets (search), whereas others will passively learn the target stimuli. Thus, these Tasks may pose significant challenges to researchers who wish to examine Vigilance in isolation from perceptual learning.

METHODS: There were 15 participants who slept in the laboratory overnight then remained awake from 08:00 (Day 1) to 12:00 (Day 2). During every second hour, they completed a 10-min PVT, a sustained attention Task that is sensitive to the effects of sleep loss and fatigue, and a 5-min PDA-PVT. RESULTS: While performance on both Tasks significantly varied as a function of hours of wakefulness, responses on the PDA-PVT were typically slower than on the PVT. When performance scores were standardized, the negative impact of increasing hours of wakefulness on performance on the 5-min PDA-PVT and 10-min PVT did not significantly differ. DISCUSSION: The findings suggest that the 5-min PDA-PVT may provide a reasonable substitute for the 10-min PVT, particularly in circumstances where a shorter test is required and/or the standard PVT is not as practical.

The independence and interdependence of coacting observers in regard to performance efficiency, workload, and stress in a Vigilance Task

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated that groups of coactive observers detect more signals in a Vigilance Task than observers working alone. Therefore, the use of such groups might be effective in enhancing signal detection in operational situations. However, concern over appearing less competent than one's cohort might induce elevated levels of workload and stress in coactive group members and thereby undermine group performance benefits. Accordingly, we performed the initial experiment comparing workload and stress in observers who performed a Vigilance Task coactively with those of observers who performed the Vigilance Task alone. METHOD: Observers monitored a video display for collision flight paths in a simulated unmanned aerial vehicle control Task. Self-reports of workload and stress were secured via the NASA-Task Load Index and the Dundee Stress State Questionnaire, respectively. RESULTS: Groups of coactive observers detected significantly more signals than did single observers. Coacting observers did not differ significantly from those operating by themselves in terms of workload but did in regard to stress; postTask distress was significantly lower for coacting than for single observers. CONCLUSION: Performing a visual Vigilance Task in a coactive manner with another observer does not elevate workload above that of observers working alone and serves to attenuate the stress associated with Vigilance Task performance. Both measures showed higher levels of cerebral vascular activity in the right as compared to the left cerebral hemisphere indicating that the overall level of performance in the abbreviated vigil is right-lateralized, a finding that coincides with the outcome of earlier blood flow studies featuring more traditional long-duration vigils. This parallel provides strong support for Temple et al's (2000) argument that the abbreviated vigil is a valid analog of more traditional long-duration Vigilance Tasks and implies that laterality in Vigilance is a generalized effect in terms of cerebral vascular dynamics that appears in terms of both blood oxygenation and hemovelocity.

As is the case with longer vigils, signal detection in the abbreviated Task was poorer for low salience than for high salience signals and stress scores, as indexed by the Dundee Stress State Questionnaire (Matthews, Joiner, Gilliland, Campbell, & Falconer, 1999), were generally greater when observers were required to detect low as compared to high salience signals. Unlike longer vigils, however, signal detection in the abbreviated Task was superior in the presence of noise than in quiet, and noise generally attenuated self-reports of stress. The beneficial effect of jet-aircraft noise for the abbreviated Task differentiates it from longer Vigilance Tasks and suggests that noise may have short-term positive value in Vigilance.

RoachAbstract:INTRODUCTION: In recent years, there has been an increasing need for a reliable and practical tool for assessing fatigue-related impairment in the field. This study investigated the sensitivity of one potential tool, a 5-min version of the psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) specifically designed for use on personal digital assistants (PDA), to 28 h of sustained wakefulness. METHODS: There were 15 participants who slept in the laboratory overnight then remained awake from 08:00 (Day 1) to 12:00 (Day 2). During every second hour, they completed a 10-min PVT, a sustained attention Task that is sensitive to the effects of sleep loss and fatigue, and a 5-min PDA-PVT. RESULTS: While performance on both Tasks significantly varied as a function of hours of wakefulness, responses on the PDA-PVT were typically slower than on the PVT. When performance scores were standardized, the negative impact of increasing hours of wakefulness on performance on the 5-min PDA-PVT and 10-min PVT did not significantly differ.
