  • California/Spain Visiting Teachers Program Participants' Opinions About the Use and Effects of Students' Primary Languages in the Classroom
    International Multilingual Research Journal, 2009
    Co-Authors: Francisco Ramos
    Abstract:

This study examined opinions about some theoretical and practical tenets of bilingualism and bilingual education, as well as about the instructional use of English language learners' (ELLs) native languages in the classroom, of 77 Teachers from Spain working in California as part of the California/Spain Visiting Teachers Program. In their responses, participants showed strong support for the tenets of bilingual education and for the use of ELLs' primary languages in class, agreed that primary language instruction contributes to the academic and English acquisition progress of ELLs, and opposed the discontinuation of ELLs' primary languages after these students had learned English. The results of the study show that 8 years after the passage of Proposition 227, which intended to eliminate the presence of minority languages in California public schools, participants continued to acknowledge the value of these languages in the linguistic and academic progress of ELLs.

  • Pesantren Education and Charismatic Leadership: A Qualitative Analysis Study on Quality Improvement of Islamic Education in Pondok Pesantren Nurul Jadid Paiton, Probolinggo
Universal Journal of Educational Research, 2019
Co-Authors: M. Syafiq Humaisi, Muhammad Thoyib, Imron Arifin, Ali Imron, Ahmad Sonhadji
    Abstract:

The current research is aimed at knowing and analysing; 1) the charismatic leadership in improving the quality of Islamic educational process, 2) the charismatic leadership in improving the supervising quality, 3) the charismatic leadership in improving the quality of educational outputs. This study employs a qualitative approach with case study design, and it applies a modified inductive analysis method. The research is conducted at Pondok Pesantren Nurul Jadid Paiton Probolinggo. The results of the study show that charismatic leadership in improving the quality of pesantren education consists of developing Teachers' competence through formal education (Dual mode system, bachelor degree for high school graduates and master degree for bachelors in both Indonesia and abroad) and informal education (training and workshop of main curriculum), the Visiting Teachers, and facilities. Besides education, it also improves the quality of student supervision, which includes developing the dormitory, the supervising program, and the quality time. Furthermore, it also improves the outcome quality of pesantren, which is strengthening the network among domestic and international alumni, interboarding schools and universities, and entrepreneurship training and community service.

  • Developing a curriculum for anaesthesia training in low- and middle-income countries.
Best practice & research. Clinical anaesthesiology, 2012
Co-Authors: Gerald Dubowitz, Faye M. Evans
    Abstract:

The shortage of healthcare providers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is well documented and is manifested by a profound lack of anaesthesia providers, especially throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. The need to develop and support training programs for physician and non-physician anesthetists in LMICs is therefore paramount to providing safe and cost effective anaesthesia care. Development of these training programs is multifaceted and must take into account the specific needs of the recipient country in order to be successful. Curriculum development should be directed towards sustainable change, ultimately reducing the need for outside support. To ensure viability as the new program develops, graduates need to be assimilated into the program as leaders. Emphasis needs to be placed on lessons learnt, professional conduct, and improving outcomes. Anaesthesia educational programs must emphasize quality, safety and professionalism in the providers and the care they deliver. Region-specific teaching methods should be developed using problem-based learning techniques and presenting data in a way that educates rather than castigates. There are good examples of programs that have been implemented to support education in LMICs. However, there are only a few that have successfully adopted a holistic approach to the entire curriculum. More often than not, programs have focused on specific areas of expertise of Visiting Teachers, rather than the needs of the recipient program. Because of the limited data available, it remains difficult to define any one clear path to achieving these goals. A combination of coordination and collaboration will increase the efficacy of implementing new or upgrading existing programs and will allow clearly defined paths to be defined in the future.
