    Abstract:

    The earliest years of photography were full of experimentation and innovation; many photographers from this era carefully documented their experimental procedures. Consequently, it is possible to reproduce historically accurate photo-graphs and negatives today. One of the oldest forms of photographic technology is the Waxed Paper negative, popular during the mid-19th century. It consists of a photosensitive sheet of writing Paper coated with a layer of wax to render it transparent. Modern Waxed Paper negatives made using 19th century Paper can potentially pass for historically significant 19th century negatives. This poses problems to museums and others interested in studying or collecting authentic 19th century photographic images. We have developed methods for separating the organic components of Waxed Paper negatives and measuring their radiocarbon content as a means of distinguishing between modern and historic Waxed Paper negatives. By detecting the presence or lack of bomb carbon in a given negative, this process can act as a tool for authentication. We have mainly focused on the extraction and 14C measurement of the wax component, reasoning that modern photographers might have easy access to 19th century Paper, but would less likely use 19th century beeswax.     Abstract:

    Just like the resistor the  Capacitor , sometimes referred to as a  Condenser , is a simple passive device that is used to “store electricity”. The capacitor is a component which has the ability or “capacity” to store energy in the form of an electrical charge producing a potential difference (Static Voltage) across its plates, much like a small rechargeable battery.There are many different kinds of capacitors available from very small capacitor beads used in resonance circuits to large power factor correction capacitors, but they all do the same thing, they store charge. In its basic form, a capacitor consists of two or more parallel conductive (metal) plates which are not connected or touching each other, but are electrically separated either by air or by some form of a good insulating material such as Waxed Paper, mica, ceramic, plastic or some form of a liquid gel as used in electrolytic capacitors. The insulating layer between a capacitors plates is commonly called the  Dielectric .

  • Effects of Bagging Treatment on Sugar Metabolism and Related Gene Expression in‘Chili'Pear Fruits

    Abstract:

    Effects of different bagging treatments on the soluble sugar contents and sucrose metabolism of ‘Chili'(Pyrus bretschneideri Rehd.)fruit during growth and development were studied.The results showed that the contents of fructose,glucose,sucrose and total soluble sugar in the fruits increased with the fruit growth and development.Bagging,especially with yellow Waxed Paper bags,reduced the soluble sugar increases.Invertase(Ivr)activity decreased with fruit development,and bagging affected the acid invertase(AI)activity.AI activities in fruits of bagging treatments were lower than that in control in 75,90 and 150 d after flowering.The neutral invertase(NI)activity showed no significant difference between bagging treatments and control.Sucrose phosphate synthase(SPS)activity increased with the fruit development and affected markedly by bagging.Among 4 tested bags,the yellow Waxed Paper bags affected SPS activity of fruits more than the white Waxed Paper and non-woven fabric bags did,and there were not significant different between fruits in plastic film bags and non-bagging control in most of the tested points.Sucrose synthase(SUS)in synthesis activity(SSs)of fruits increased gradually and sucrose synthase in cleavage activity(SSc)decreased as fruit growth.Bagging did not showed significant effect on the SSs activity in most tested points,but depressed the SSc activity in fruit development late stage.Real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR analysis of sucrose metabolism related enzyme genes AIV1,AIV2,SPS1 and SUS1 expression showed that bagging reduced the relative expression of AIV2,and non-woven bags had more effects than plastic film bags.Bagging delayed the maximum accumulation time of SPS1,and the SPS1 relative expression were significantly lower in fruits with plastic film bags than in non-bagging control in the fruit growth early stage.Bagging altered the time course of SUS1 expression,the relative expression amount of SUS1 in fruits with plastic film bags did not reveal obvious peak,and in fruit with yellow Waxed Paper bags appeared a maximum accumulation 15 d earlier than control and became lower after.

    Abstract:

    STUDY DESIGN Experimental animal study. OBJECTIVE The authors conducted a study to determine the effectiveness of Waxed Paper in preventing postlaminectomy epidural fibrosis in rats. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Extensive epidural fibrosis after lumbar surgery may be the underlying cause in most cases of failed back surgery syndrome. Various materials have been used to prevent epidural fibrosis, but only moderate success has been shown. METHODS Laminectomies were performed at the fourth lumbar vertebra (L-4) in 30 rats. Waxed Paper or Gore-Tex was applied in a blinded fashion to the operative sites. In the control group, only the L-4 laminectomy was performed. The rats were killed 28 days after surgery. RESULTS The extent of epidural fibrosis was evaluated by histologic analysis. There was a meaningful statistical difference among the Waxed Paper group and the Gore-Tex group compared with the control group, but there was no difference when the effectiveness of Waxed Paper was compared with that of Gore-Tex. CONCLUSIONS In this experimental model, the Waxed Paper applied locally effectively reduced epidural fibrosis, completely avoided dural adherence, and induced no side effects.
