Given the global increase of mental disorders, initiatives encouraging Young Academics to choose psychiatry as their speciality, and enhancing the attractiveness of our field, are urgently needed. Two projects for the promotion of Young Academics are presented in this paper, one working with medical students, the other with residents in psychiatry. The Zurich ‘Study Focus on Psychiatry’ provides medical students with knowledge and key competencies in psychiatry at an early stage of their undergraduate training. This way, students are offered an opportunity to have a thorough look into psychiatry as a clinical specialism and as a science. The three-year psychotherapy training curriculum in medical psychotherapy provides residents in psychiatry and psychotherapy with specific training in either cognitive behavioural, or psychodynamic, or systemic psychotherapy. Die Psychiatrie - Grundlagen und Perspektiven, 2012Co-Authors: Michael Rufer, Wolfgang Gerke, Ulrich SchnyderAbstract:In der Schweiz kann der Bedarf an Psychiatern seit Jahren nur mittels auslandischer Kollegen gedeckt werden. Initiativen zur Forderung des Nachwuchses sind dringend notwendig, auch angesichts der weltweiten Zunahme an psychischen Erkrankungen. Zwei Projekte zur Nachwuchsforderung werden in diesem Artikel vorgestellt, von denen eines im Medizinstudium und das andere in der Facharztweiterbildung ansetzt. Im Zurcher Studienschwerpunkt Psychiatrie werden den Studierenden Kenntnisse und Schlusselkompetenzen fur das Fach Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie bereits zu einem sehr fruhen Zeitpunkt vermittelt. Damit wird die Moglichkeit geschaffen, dass sich die Studierenden ein eigenes Bild von den klinischen und wissenschaftlichen Aspekten dieses Fachgebietes machen. – Im Weiterbildungskonzept Arztliche Psychotherapie werden in ein modellspezifisches Weiterbildungsprogramm (kognitiv-verhaltenstherapeutisch, psychodynamisch oder systemisch) systematisch modellubergreifende Elemente integriert, was den Alltagsanforderungen an Assistenzarzte weit mehr entspricht als eine rein modellspezifische Weiterbildung. Beide Projekte haben zum Ziel, die Attraktivitat des Fachgebietes der Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie zu erhohen und damit einen Beitrag zur Nachwuchsforderung zu leisten.

fostering networking behavior career planning and optimism and subjective career success an intervention study
Journal of Vocational Behavior, 2015Co-Authors: Daniel Spurk, Simone Kauffeld, Luisa Barthauer, Nora S R HeinemannAbstract:Abstract The present study evaluated personal resource-oriented interventions supporting the career development of Young Academics, working at German universities within the STEM fields. The study sought to foster subjective career success by improving networking behavior, career planning, and career optimism. The study involved a quasi-experimental pre-post intervention with two intervention and two control groups ( N = 81 research associates). Participants of the first intervention group received networking training; participants of the second intervention group received the same networking training plus individual career coaching. Participants of both intervention groups were female. Participants of the control groups (i.e., male vs. female group) did not participate in any intervention. As expected, path analyses, based on mean differences from pre-test to post-test, revealed an increase in career planning and career optimism within the networking plus career coaching intervention group, that was indirectly positively related to changes in subjective career success. Contrary to our expectations, the networking group training alone and in combination with the career coaching showed no effectiveness in fostering networking behavior. Results are discussed in the context of career counseling and intervention effectiveness studies.
