  • age segregated and gated retirement communities in the third age the differential contribution of place community to self Actualization
    Environment and Planning B-planning & Design, 2002
    Co-Authors: Ivan Townshend
    Abstract:

The author focuses on the role of place-based community both in in-situ aging and in age-segregated (often gated and walled) retirement villages within cities as a potential contributor towards self-Actualization. Elderly individuals in a case study in Calgary, Alberta, were measured on the short index of self Actualization and a series of multivariate ‘structures’ of place — community associated with behavioral, cognitive, and affective features of community derived from a principal components analysis of community indicator variables. Self-Actualization tendencies were not found to differ by residential context. Multiple regression models showed a similar overall contribution of all community structures to self-Actualization in the different residential contexts, but different sets of community structures were identified as unique and significant predictors of self-Actualization in the two residential settings. This differential impact may signal that a variety of forms and structures of person–environm...

  • aspects of fishery management job satisfaction and well being among commercial fishermen in the northeast region of the united states
    Society & Natural Resources, 2015
Co-Authors: Richard B Pollnac, Tarsila Seara, Lisa L Colburn
    Abstract:

The complexity and rapid changes in fishery management approaches have forced fishermen to adopt strategies that may not be congruent with the original appeal of fishing as an occupation. Changes in fish populations and resulting efforts to manage stocks can impact job characteristics that influence job satisfaction (social–psychological needs, basic needs, and self-Actualization) and potentially well-being. This hypothesis is addressed through examination of job satisfaction and well-being among 478 fishermen in three subregions of the northeastern United States. The results demonstrate that differences between the mix of regional fisheries and attitudes toward regulations affect two components of job satisfaction and well-being but not self-Actualization. Management's attempts to reduce fishing effort therefore need to account for the persistence of self-Actualization by either developing appropriate alternative occupations or preparing for the consequences of lower job satisfaction on the well-being of...

  • reconstruction of self Actualization support service based on the 7 habits
    Network-Based Information Systems, 2014
    Co-Authors: Yoshihiro Kawano, Yuka Obu
    Abstract:

Social media such as Twitter and Facebook have become popular. In the age of social media, many people have become more active online. Personal branding is a very important strategy for capitalizing on individual strong points. This kind of branding is expected to contribute to self-Actualization. Therefore, the presence of mentors who advise users to find their strong points for self-Actualization is needed. We have proposed a personal branding support service named Mentors. In this paper, we propose a reconstruction of self-Actualization support service based on the 7 habits. Concretely, Mentors is divided into two parts, that is, Self-reflector and Socializer. Self-reflector aims at inside branding that focuses on private victory. Socializer aims at outside branding that focuses on public victory.

Existence of mentors supports to find own strong points for self-Actualization. In this paper, we propose a personal branding support service named "Mentors". The concept of Mentors is "Everyone has face of both mentor and mentee", surely it is friendly and rivalry. The most featuring function is to share components of self-analysis in human life design, that is, value, mission, and strategy. Mentors aims at promotion of human life by understanding their strong points and using social media effectively. Future works are to launch Mentors, and evaluation of Mentors.

  • need satisfaction and well being testing self determination theory in eight cultures
    Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, 2013
Co-Authors: Timothy A Church, Guy J Curtis, Marcia S Katigbak, Kenneth D Locke, Hengsheng Zhang, Jiliang Shen, Jose De Jesus Vargasflores, Joselina Ibanezreyes, Junko Tanakamatsumi, Helena F Cabrera
    Abstract:

According to Self-Determination Theory (SDT), satisfaction of needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness is a universal requirement for psychological well-being. We tested this hypothesis with college students in the United States, Australia, Mexico, Venezuela, the Philippines, Malaysia, China, and Japan. Participants rated the extent to which these needs, plus needs for self-Actualization and pleasure-stimulation, were satisfied in various roles and reported their general hedonic (i.e., positive and negative affect) and eudaimonic (e.g., meaning in life, personal growth) well-being. Asian participants averaged lower than non-Asian participants in perceived satisfaction of autonomy, competence, and self-Actualization needs and in most aspects of eudaimonic well-being, and these differences were partially accounted for by differences in dialecticism and independent self-construals. Nonetheless, perceived need satisfaction predicted overall well-being to a similar degree in all cultures and in most cul...
