    Abstract:

    This paper describes the design and implementation of the Unix Administration Tool Webmin, available from http://www.webmin.com/webmin/. Webmin allows moderately experienced users to manage their Unix system through a web browser interface, instead of editing configuration files directly. The most recent version supports Apache, Squid, BIND, Samba and many other servers and services. It supports multiple operating systems and distributions, different languages, multiple users each with different levels of access, and SSL encryption. The first part of the paper explains why Webmin was developed and the initial design goals, and compares the design to other similar Tools such as Linuxconf. Subsequent sections cover the design and implementation of the detailed multi-user security model, the implementation of Webmin itself, how support for multiple operating systems is handled and how internationalization works. Finally, two Webmin modules are discussed in more detail and various problems explained before the conclusion.

    Abstract:

    The internet has changed the face of communication and enables more people to reach more other people than ever before. In this work, we employ the robustness of the internet by developing a smart agent alert system that delivers spy information instantly. The short message service (SMS) and Email capabilities were maximized to achieve this, seven model blocks were used: SMS model, Email model, the administrator console, the mail checker, web handler, the web interface and database model. SMS model is responsible for routing the SMS, it connect with the short message service centre (SMSC). When the system sends a text message to a user, the phone actually sends the message to the SMSC, which stores the message and then delivers it when the recipient is on the network. Email model is responsible for sending the message to the user; it connects to the mail checker to report back to the system where the mail is delivered to the user. The administrator console is an Administration Tool that enables Email and SMS Alert (EMSA) System administrators to administer the EMSA system components. As an integral part of the EMSA System, the console works as an independent process. It enables EMSA system administrators to manage actions related to user and changing data, activation and deactivation of the EMSA system, and controlling the web handler and mail checker. Our results stem from using a recently proposed role model and procedural model at Siemens AG ICN, a large industrial organization. The core of this paper presents the data model, which integrates business processes, role based security Administration and access control. Moreover, a structured top-down approach is outlined which is the basis for derivation of suitable business roles from enterprise process models. A brief description is given on how these results may be used to first build the Role Catalog and then support the implementation of RBAC and a single point of Administration and control, using a cross-platform Administration Tool

    Abstract:

    In this paper we describe the work devising a new technique for role-finding to implement Role-Based Security Administration. Our results stem from industrial projects, where large-scale customers wanted to migrate to Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) based on already existing access rights patterns in their production IT-systems. The core of this paper creates a link between the use of well established data mining technology and RBAC. We present a process for detecting patterns in a data base of access rights and for deriving enterprise roles from these patterns. Moreover, a Tool (the SAM Role Miner) is described. The result allows an organized migration process to RBAC with the goal of building a single point of Administration and control, using a cross-platform Administration Tool.
