    Abstract:

    ABSTRAK Pengendalian gulma umum dilakukan menggunakan herbisida sintetis karena mudah dan murah. Cara ini tidak ramah lingkungan, dalam jangka panjang dapat mengakibatkan resistensi pada gulma. Alternatif yang dapat digunakan untuk mengurangi dampak negatif herbisida sintetis ialah menggunakan bioherbisida kombinasi ekstrak alang-alang (Imperata cylindrica) dan kirinyuh (Chromolaena odorata). Alang-alang dan kirinyuh diketahui mengandung senyawa alelopati yang mampu meghambat tanaman lain. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui pengaruh pemberian kombinasi ekstrak alang-alang dan kirinyuh pada tanaman Babandotan (Ageratum Conyzoides) dan untuk mengetahui golongan senyawa fitokimia yang tekandung dalam ekstrak alang-alang dan kirinyuh. Jenis penelitian ini merupakan kuantitatif dengan pendekatan eksperimental laboratorium. Rancangan penelitian yang digunakan ialah Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL), terdiri dari 5 perlakuan ekstrak yaitu A1 (10%), A2 (15%), A3 (20%), A4 (25%), A5 (30%) dan A0 (kontrol) dengan 3 pengulangan pada masing-masing perlakuan. Data yang diambil ialah tingkat kerusakan gulma Ageratum Conyzoides selama 7 hari. Data tersebut dianalisis dengan Uji Anova dan dilanjut dengan Uji DMRT (Duncan’s Multiple Range Test). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kombinasi ekstrak etanol rimpang alang-alang dan daun kirinyuh berpengaruh pada tanaman babandotan dengan daya hambat pertumbuhan gulma babandotan tertinggi pada pemberian ekstrak etanol rimpang alang-alang dan daun kirinyuh konsentrasi 30%. Hasil uji fitokimia ekstrak etanol rimpang alang-alang mengandung senyawa steroid, saponin, tanin, alkaloid dan terpenoid. Ekstrak etanol daun kirinyuh mengandung senyawa saponin, tanin, alkaloid, flavonoid, dan terpenoid. Kata Kunci : Ekstrak Rimpang Alang-alang dan Daun Kirinyuh, Gulma, Babandotan, Bioherbisida

    Abstract:

    A study was conducted to find out the phytotoxic effect of invasive weed Ageratum Conyzoides on chickpea (Cicer arietinum). Weed residues amended in the soil significantly reduced the chickpea growth. Root length, plant height and biomass of chickpea were lower in the soils amended with below- or above-ground weed residues. In addition, compared to control, the nodulation (nodule number, their weight and leghemoglobin content) of chickpea was also reduced in the amended soils. The observed reduction in chickpea growth and nodulation was attributed to the presence of phytotoxic phenolics in the residues.

    A study was conducted to assess the phytotoxicity of Ageratum Conyzoides, a weed of cultivated areas, to the growth and establishment of wheat (Triticum aestivum). The lengths of the radicle and coleoptile and the seedling dry weight of wheat were significantly reduced when wheat was grown in field soil previously infested with A. Conyzoides, compared to control soil collected from an area devoid of this weed. Even extracts prepared from A. Conyzoides soil were inhibitory, indicating the presence of some water-soluble phytotoxins in the soil. To determine the possible contribution of the weed in releasing these phytotoxins, growth studies involving leaf residues and their extracts and amended soils (prepared by incorporating leaf residues and residue extracts) were also performed on wheat. With all treatments, an inhibitory effect of A. Conyzoides was found, compared to respective controls. A significant amount of water-soluble phytotoxins (the phenolics) was found to be present in the soil infested with A. Conyzoides, leaf residues and the amended soils. The amount of phenolics correlated well with growth performance in the respective treatments. This study establishes the phytotoxicity of leaf residues of A. Conyzoides to wheat through the release of phenolics into the soil, which may serve as possible tools in establishing its allelopathy.

    A study was conducted to assess the allelopathic effect of two volatile monoterpenes viz. cineole and citronellol on Ageratum Conyzoides with a view to explore the possibility of their exploitation for future weed management. Both the monoterpenes severely affected the germination, speed of germination, seedling growth, chlorophyll content and respiratory activity. After two weeks of exposure, the weed plants wilted. Out of the two monoterpenes, cineole was more toxic in causing injury to the weed.

    Abstract:

    Parthenin, a constituent of Parthenium hysterophorus, was evaluated for herbicidal activity against Ageratum Conyzoides (billgoat weed) under in vitro conditions. It inhibited/retarded germination of A. Conyzoides at concentrations ranging from 0.02 to 0.1 mg/ml. Radicle elongation and seedling length were severely reduced. The germination of wheat, however, remained unaffected at similar concentrations. The study, therefore, paves a way for possible exploitation of parthenin as a selective herbicide.

    Abstract Ageratum Conyzoides, Chromolaena odorata, and Lantana camara, are common weed species in Cameroon. Essential oil extracts from their leaves were tested for efficacy on the morality of the maize grain weevil, Sitophilus zeamais (Coleoptera, Curculionidae). Concentrations of the essential oils relative to the maize grains of 0.013, 0.025, 0.05 and 0.1% (v/w) were used for A. Conyzoides and 0.063, 0.125, 0.25 and 0.50% (v/w) for C. odorata and L. camara. Twenty 7-day old adult weevils were fed on maize grains treated with the above concentrations of the essential oils in Petri dishes. Control dishes contained insects and maize grains without essential oils. The experiment was repeated three times. Dishes were incubated in the laboratory for 7 days at 26°C and 75–85% relative humidity. Insect mortality was recorded every 24 h. Graphs of percentage mortality versus the duration of exposure were constructed and the LD50 was computed for each oil. Significant insect mortality was obtained with all the essential oils used. The mortality of S. zeamais increased with the concentration of the essential oils of the three plants and the duration of exposure of the weevils on the treated substrates. The essential oil extract of Ageratum Conyzoides was the most effective insecticide (LD50=0.09% in 24 h), followed by that of L. camara (LD50=0.16%) and C. odorata (LD50=6.78%). These results show that the essential oils of the leaves of some of these weed species may be exploited for insect control in stored products.
