    The straw itch mite, Pyemotes tritici Lagreze-Fossat and Montane (Acari: Pyemotidae), was discovered parasitising the goldspotted oak borer, Agrilus auroguttatus Schaeffer (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), an invasive exotic species to California, United States of America, and the Mexican goldspotted oak borer, Agrilus coxalis Waterhouse (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), during surveys for natural enemies for a classical biological control programme for A. auroguttatus. Pyemotes tritici caused low levels of mortality to each species of flatheaded borer, but it will likely not be a good candidate for a biological control programme because it is a generalist parasitoid with deleterious human health effects.

    In recent decades, invasive phloem and wood borers have become important pests in North America. To aid tree sampling and survey efforts for the newly introduced goldspotted oak borer, Agrilus auroguttatus Schaeffer (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), we examined spatial patterns of exit holes on the boles (trunks) of 58 coast live oak, Quercus agrifolia Nee (Fagaceae), trees at five sites in San Diego County, southern California, United States of America. Agrilus auroguttatus exit hole densities were greater at the root collar than at mid-boles (6.1 m above ground). Dispersion patterns of exit holes on lower boles (r1.52 m) were random for trees with low exit hole densities and aggregated for trees with high exit hole densities. The mean exit hole density measured from three randomly chosen quadrats (0.09 m 2 ) provided a statistically reliable estimate of the true mean exit hole density on the lower bole, with ,25% error from the true mean.     Calosota elongata Gibson (Hymenoptera: Eupelmidae) is a gregarious, ectoparasitic larval parasitoid that was described recently (Gibson 2010) in association with the goldspotted oak borer, Agrilus coxalis Waterhouse [now considered to be Agrilus auroguttatus Schaeffer (Coleoptera: Buprestidae)] in its native range in southeastern Arizona. We have discovered this parasitoid outside of its presumptive native range on 1 December 2010 near the Pine Creek Trailhead, Cleveland National Forest in San Diego Co., California, beneath the bark of coast live oak, Quercus agrifolia Nee (Fagaceae), in association with A. auroguttatus.

    Abstract:

    The goldspotted oak borer (GSOB), Agrilus auroguttatus Schaeffer (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), is an introduced and aggressive phloem/wood borer infesting native oaks in southern California. Elevated levels of oak mortality have occurred continually for the last nine years on three oak species in San Diego Co., California, USA. Biological control is being assessed as an option for long-term and widespread management of the invasive population of GSOB. Foreign exploration in the native ranges of GSOB and a related sibling species (Agrilus coxalis Waterhouse) was conducted to determine life history information, to assess the natural enemy complex, and to collect specimens for molecular analyses that could help to identify the area of origin of California’s introduced population. Two species of parasitoids, Calosota elongata Gibson (Eupelmidae) and Atanycolus simplex Cresson (Braconidae), were discovered with GSOB populations in Arizona and California. No insect natural enemies were found with populations of A. coxalis in southern Mexico. However, Quercus conzatti Trel. and Quercus peduncularis Nee in Oaxaca and Chiapas, respectively, were recorded as the first known hosts of A. coxalis. A comparative analysis of our understanding of the natural enemy complexes for other pestiferous Agrilus with that of GSOB suggests that more effort should be directed at uncovering potential egg parasitoids and microbial pathogens of GSOB. Analyses of mitochondrial and nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) revealed that the California population of GSOB was more similar to the Arizona population. Specimens of A. coxalis from southern Mexico were confirmed as a separate species. Additional surveys and sampling are needed across the complete native range of the GSOB species complex to develop a comprehensive inventory of parasitoid species that could be considered for use in a classical biological control program in California and to delineate the area of origin of California’s population.

    ABSTRACT An invasive population of the goldspotted oak borer, Agrilus auroguttatus Schaeffer (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), is colonizing and killing three species of oaks in San Diego Co., California. However, the interactions of A. auroguttatus with oaks in its native range in southeastern Arizona have not been recorded. We present a complete inventory of the North and Central American collection records of A. auroguttatus and Agrilus coxalis Waterhouse from the literature and from a survey of the holdings of 27 museum and personal collections. We also discuss the relationship between this collection history and the behavior of A. auroguttatus as an intracontinental invasive species. Surveys of native populations of A. auroguttatus in oak forest stands from four mountain ranges in southeastern Arizona revealed injury patterns on Emory oak, Quercus emoryi Torrey, and silverleaf oak, Quercus hypoleucoides A.     The genus Hemidactylus Oken, 1817 has cosmopolite distribution, with three species occurring in Brazil, two of them native, H. brasilianus and H. Agrius, and one exotic, H. mabouia. Considering the studies about ecology of lizards conducted in the Ecological Station of the Seridó, from 2001 to 2011, this study aimed (1) to re-evaluate the occurrence of the species of Hemidactylus in this ESEC; (2) to analyze ecological and biological aspects of the H. Agrius population; and (3) to investigate the current and potential distribution of the native species of the genus in northeastern Brazil, analyzing the suitability of ESEC to this taxon. For the first two objectives, a sampling area consisting of five transects of 200 x 20 m, was inspected in alternating daily shifts for three consecutive days, from August 2012 to August 2013. For the latter objective, occurrence points of H. Agrius and H. brasilianus from literature and from the database of Herpetological Collections of the UFRN and the UNICAMP were consulted to build predictive maps via the Maximum Entropy algorithm (MaxEnt). In ESEC Seridó, 62 H. Agrius individuals were collected (25 females, 18 males and 19 juveniles), and two neonates were obtained from a communal nest incubated in the laboratory. No record was made for the other two species of the genus. Hemidactylus Agrius demonstrated to be a nocturnal species specialized in habitats with rocky outcrops; but this species is generalist regarding microhabitat use. In the population studied, females had an average body length greater than males, and showed higher frequencies of caudal autotomy. Regarding diet, H. Agrius is a moderately generalist species that consumes arthropods, especially insect larvae, Isoptera and Araneae; and vertebrates, with a case of cannibalism registered in the population. With respect to seasonal differences, only the number of food items ingested differed between seasons. The diet was similar between sexes, but ontogenetic differences were recorded for the total volume and maximum length of the food items. Significant relationships were found between lizard body/head size measurements and the maximum length of prey consumed. Cases of polydactyly and tail bifurcation were recorded in the population, with frequencies of 1.6% and 3.1%, respectively. In relation xv to the occurrence points of the native species, 27 were identified, 14 for H. Agrius and 13 for H. brasilianus. The first species presented restricted distribution, while the second showed a wide distribution. In both models generated, the ESEC Seridó area showed medium to high suitability. The results of this study confirm the absence of H. brasilianus and H. mabouia this ESEC, and reveal H. Agrius as a dietary opportunist and cannibal species. Agrius é uma espécie moderadamente generalista, que consome artrópodes, principalmente Aranae, Orthoptera e Isoptera; e vertebrados, além de ter constatado um caso de canibalismo. Quanto à sazonalidade foram registradas diferenças apenas para o número dos itens alimentares consumidos. A dieta foi similar entre os sexos, porém diferenças ontogenéticas foram registradas para o volume total e comprimento máximo dos itens alimentares. Relações significativas foram constatadas entre o tamanho do corpo e da cabeça dos espécimes com o comprimento máximo das presas consumidas. Casos de polidactilia e de bifurcação caudal foram registrados na população com frequências de 1,6 % e 3,1%, respectivamente. Em relação às localidades de ocorrência das espécies nativas, foram constatados 27 pontos, sendo 14 para H.
