The APR is also reflected in lowered total serum protein (TSP) and specific changes in the major electrophoretically separated protein fractions. The present study examined pretreatment and posttreatment serum TSP and the concentrations and percentages of the major electrophoretically separated serum protein fractions in 37 major depressed subjects, of whom 29 had treatment-resistant depression (TRD), and in 29 normal controls. We found that TSP and the percentage and concentration of serum albumin (Alb) and gamma-Globulin fraction were significantly lower in major depression and TRD than in normal controls. Serum beta-Globulin concentrations were significantly lower in major depressed and TRD subjects than in normal controls. The percentages of the Alpha 1- and Alpha 2-Globulin fractions were significantly higher in major depressed subjects than in normal controls. There were no significant effects of subchronic treatment with antidepressants on TSP, the percentage or concentration of the major electrophoretically separated protein fractions, i.e. Alpha 1-, Alpha 2- and beta-Globulin. There was a significant increase in percentage of the gamma-Globulin fraction after subchronic treatment with antidepressants. The results support the hypothesis that major depression and TRD are accompanied by a chronic APR.

Alpha-2 Globulin "Spike " in Renal Carcinoma
2016Co-Authors: Peter Mcphedran, Stuart C. Finch, Yale R. NemersonAbstract:A 44-year-old man was found to have a renal carcinoma after 8 months of constitutional symptoms. Initial study showed a puzzling array of laboratory abnormalities, including a prominent Alpha-2 Globulin "spike " on serum protein electrophoresis. Since the patient had plasmacytosis of the bone marrow, the diagnosis of multiple myeloma was considered but was discarded when the Globulin proved to be haptoglobin. This case serves as a reminder of the propensity of early renal carcinoma to produce constitutional symptoms and of the variety of proteins that may produce Alpha-2 peaks on electrophoresis. ABDOMINAL PAIN, flank mass, and hematuria are the familiar clinical findings of renal carcinoma. How-ever, these are signs of advanced, usually irreversible, disease. In 1968 Bowman and Martinez (1) de-scribed a syndrome consisting of "fever, anemia and hyperhaptoglobinemia, an extra-renal triad of hyper-nephroma " that they hoped would aid in the diagnosis of early, localized cancer. We recently encountered a patient with a renal carcinoma associated with this extrarenal triad along with other hematologic and serum protein abnormalities that initially seemed non-specific but proved to be effects of the tumor. The very high haptoglobin concentration in our patient was manifested by an Alpha-2 Globulin "spike, " seen on paper electrophoresis of serum proteins, that initially suggested the possibility of multiple myeloma. The extrarenal manifestations of renal carcinoma de-serve reemphasis since they may aid in the identifi-cation of a curable malignant tumor that is still localized, even months after the onset of symptoms

differences in ethoxyquin nephrotoxicity between male and female f344 rats
Food and Chemical Toxicology, 2003Co-Authors: G E Neal, D J Judah, G G Hard, Nobuyuki ItoAbstract:Abstract Dose–response studies have shown a sharp threshold for the renal papillary toxic effect in male rats between 0.25% and 0.5% ethoxyquin (Eto) in the diet over 6 months. Although similar elevated urinary protein (albumin) levels resulted from dietary Eto (0.5%) in both males and females, papillary necrosis was male specific. Following [14C]Eto administration, radiolabel was associated with urinary albumin but not Alpha 2 Globulin (α2μ-g). Autoradiographic studies indicated that the sex differences in nephrotoxicity do not involve differences in distribution or retention of Eto. Faecal and urinary metabolic profiles were also similar in the two sexes. The sharp threshold of toxicity in the male rat could indicate a fine balance between toxifying/detoxifying metabolism of Eto.

Biochemical and physiological parameters associated with Trypanosoma evansi prevalence in wild capybaras

Investigating host health, therefore, is key to understanding important mechanisms of the host-parasite interaction at the individual and population levels. Recently, we reported a prevalence of 10% of Trypanosoma evansi (Steel 1884) in a population of capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris Linnaeus 1766) from Esteros del Iberรก, Argentina; however, the impact of T. evansi infection in capybaras is unknown. The aim of this study was to explore associations between T. evansi infection and biochemical and physiological parameters in wild capybaras using blood samples (n=60) from a managed population of free-ranging capybaras from Esteros del Iberรก. Infection by T. evansi was negatively associated with body condition, albumin, Alpha-2 Globulin concentrations, albumin:Globulin ratio and eosinophil counts, and it was positively associated with spleen index and gamma-Globulin concentrations.
