development of an ontology of biomimetics based on Altshuller s matrix
International TRIZ Future Conference, 2018Co-Authors: Julian F. V. Vincent, Denis CavallucciAbstract:The discovery of novel solutions in engineering is critical for most industries. Largely inspired by TRIZ, practical solutions can be found beyond engineering. In the wider search, the tradition of looking to biology for solutions (biomimetics) is well founded but little exploited. It turns out to be a non-trivial exercise, requiring a bridge between largely descriptive biology (functioning primarily at the molecular level) and engineering which is predictable (but at a more statistical level). We propose that the bridge is best built at the level of design, more particularly in the behaviour of solving well-defined problems, an aspect at which TRIZ excels. We postulate that an ontology is an excellent medium for this bridge. The central theorem is that there is a finite number of design problems expressed as trade-offs (Altshuller’s Matrix) and that the same (or very similar) trade-offs can be identified in biology. The ontology enables the identification and alignment of these trade-offs, thus marrying a problem in engineering with its solution in biology and referential expression in a (possibly) novel engineering material, structure or device.

can Altshuller s matrix be skipped using cbr and semantic similarity reasoning
2018Co-Authors: Pei Zhang, Denis Cavallucci, Sarra Ghabri, Cecilia ZannimerkAbstract:Inventive Design is a research field born on the basis that TRIZ body of knowledge was both promising and original, but also containing inconsistencies that only an in-depth scientific work achieved by a community of researchers could handle for its evolution. Amongst the techniques used by TRIZ community, Altshuller’s Contradiction Matrix combined with the 40 Inventive Principles that appears as a flagship for newcomers and observers. This rather old tool from Altshuller has undergone many researches and a large quantity of evolutions have been proposed for its rebuilding. Nevertheless, after several attempt of practices, two major drawbacks in its use still appears to engineers. The first one is when associating contradiction’s parameters to one or several of the 39 Generic Engineering Parameters, the second is to interpret the resulting Inventive Principles appearing in the cells of the Contradiction Matrix. These two potential reasons of inefficiencies are known to TRIZ world, but only few proposals have been made by researches in the community to cope with these drawbacks. This paper proposes to report about the use of Case-based Reasoning (CBR) associated to semantic similarity algorithms as a means to directly place users in front of a set of eligible solutions when trying to solve a contradiction, therefore avoiding the use of the Contradiction Matrix. Our research has now reached a milestone since we have developed an online web-application associated with a database and a case base for testing the inventive problem-solving environment with users and compare it with classical use of the matrix. We also summarize the architecture of our methodology and illustrate it with a case study.

Innovative Design of Substance-Field Notations for Reformulating the Seventy-six Standard Solutions in TRIZ
2012Co-Authors: Song Kyoo KimAbstract:The substance-field model and 76 Inventive Standard were conceptualized by Genrich Altshuller who has built classical TRIZ. The paper shows the innovative notation methods so called Su-Field notations which can indicate characteristics of TRIZ problems and solutions instantly. Intuitive understanding the characteristics of TRIZ problems is the main purpose of Su-Field notations. This innovative notation method make possible to understand the Su-Field model based concept solutions only with minor knowledge of the Inventive Standards. The tractable results are used for demonstration in the real-world applications.

Conceptual Design Based on Substance-Field Model in Theory of Inventive Problem Solving
International Journal of Innovation Management and Technology, 2012Co-Authors: Song Kyoo KimAbstract:Abstrac—The paper shows the innovative conceptual design for the Inventive Standards based on Su-Field notations which can indicate characteristics of TRIZ problems and solutions instantly. The substance-field model and 76 Inventive Standard were conceptualized by Genrich Altshuller who has built classical TRIZ. The conceptual design provides the intuitive understanding of the TRIZ problem characteristics. The TRIZ characteristics based on this notation method in the paper also indicate the candidate solutions only with minor knowledge of the Inventive Standards.

Enhanced user experience design based on user behavior data by using theory of inventive problem solving
IEEM2010 - IEEE International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management, 2010Co-Authors: Song Kyoo KimAbstract:The paper deals another practical TRIZ applications for information technologies that is similar with the previous adaptation. TRIZ (Teoriya Resheniya Izobretatelskikh Zadatch) that is also called TIPS (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving) is a methodology that is the practical innovation tool and the model-based technique for generating innovative ideas by Genrich Altshuller. In the other hand, recent trends of improving user experiences can make consumer electronics to have high performed features in simple way to access. The key idea of the enhanced user experience is behavior analysis based on the typical statistical data that can be gathering during the regular user operations. This new user interface enhancing technology is designed to give simpler user experiences by using TRIZ method.

Design of event driven Digital Right Management by using Theory of Inventive Problem Solving
2008 IEEE International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management, 2008Co-Authors: Song Kyoo KimAbstract:This paper deals with the practical approach of technology enhancement in mobile industry by using technology innovation tools. TRIZ (Teoriya Resheniya Izobretatelskikh Zadatch) that is also called TIPS (theory of inventive problem solving) is a methodology and model-based technology for generating innovative ideas and solutions for problem solving. In addition, it is also most practical technology innovation tool that have been originally designed by Genrich Altshuller (1996). In the other hand, digital right management (DRM) is considered as the target of applying the TRIZ for technology enhancement because DRM is one of most critical features in the mobile industries. DRM is the access control technology to be used by issuers and other copyright holders to limit usage of digital media or devices. Event driven digital right management (Kim, 2007) is the new DRM technology that has been designed by using TRIZ method. Unlike general right objects, event driven DRM controls the right object based on events. TRIZ methodology is applied for mobile technology enhancement in this paper.

1 Similarity between TRIZ Principles
2014Co-Authors: He Cong, Loh Han TongAbstract:Developed during the initial patent research by Altshuller and his colleagues, the 40 Inventive Principles (IP) [1, 21] are one of the most important tools of TRIZ. As a basic tool of TRIZ, the IP were always introduced as the first concept to new comers to TRIZ. With the increasingly popular application of TRIZ in recent decades, experts have summarized numerous examples about application of IP in different technical and non-technical fields [3]. However, some criticisms have also been given upon the original list of Principles: they are too abstract and sometimes overlapped with each other [4]. In recent research, the relationship between IP has been analyzed. In 1998, Williams [5] analyzed the symmetry and asymmetry of IP and summarized several groups of Principles that are opposite to each other. In 2002, Mann [4] proposed a 5*3 matrix to group most of the Principles into five different strategies by the space-time-interface entities. In [6], an automatic patent classification system based on 40 IP has been proposed and analyzed upon a small set of patent documents. Elaborating on the idea of automatic patent classification according to IP, this paper analyzes the similarity between Principles based on the text information in the descriptions of examples using the Principles. 6 of 40 Principles are defined as ‘Obscure Principles’, which are hard to be analyzed by automatic classification system. In addition, two kinds of similaritie

Grouping of TRIZ Inventive Principles to facilitate automatic patent classification
Expert Systems with Applications, 2008Co-Authors: He Cong, Loh Han TongAbstract:Automatic patent classification facilitates searching for previous patent documents. For TRIZ users, they would like to search for patents based on the solutions (TRIZ Inventive Principles) to the Contradictions addressed in the patents, which is different from traditional searching for prior arts based on the application fields of the inventions. For this purpose, a TRIZ-based patent classification expert system is needed. To facilitate automatic classification of patent documents according to Inventive Principles (IPs) for TRIZ users, we analyze the original 40 IPs proposed by Altshuller. Seven IPs are defined as Obscure IPs, the other 33 as Distinct IPs. Furthermore, two kinds of similarity among the Distinct IPs are defined: text similarity and meaning similarity. Then the 40 IPs are grouped into 22 new classes. Automatic classification based on 674 patent documents associated with these 22 new classes is tested and analyzed, with two issues of multi-label classification and class imbalance addressed.

Episteme of motivation : first elements of a vector analysis ?
This doctoral research explores the complementarity, for learning French, of humanistic and (socio-)cognitive approaches of the theories of motivation with students enrolled in SEGPA. The non parametric statistical analysis (then parametric) of scales based on the theory of self-determination and on the theory of self-efficacy, reflects the evolution of the variables of motivation of these students after training in TRIZ (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving, Altshuller). These results are compared to the mark at a French exam coming from the academic qualification (CFG) in order to define the behavior as an increasing function of the variables « motivation » and « activity ».The treatment of the corpus conducted the study to propose an epistemological rupture and to adopt a position supported by an analogy between the concept of force in physic and motivation in psychology
