Influence of ground cover on dynamics of Amblyseius fallacis Garman (Acarina; Phytoseiidae) in New York apple orchards

HerringAbstract:Abstract Four studies were conducted between 1989 and 1992 to determine the influence of vegetation beneath apple trees on the dynamics of the mite predator Amblyseius fallacis (Garman). Withholding herbicide applications in the spring to allow ground cover to grow beneath trees did not result in greater numbers of A. fallacis in trees during the summer compared with plots where herbicides were applied and ground cover was greatly reduced. A survey of 23 commercial orchards revealed that A. fallacis overwintered on trees in many of these sites (14). Typhlodromus pyri (Scheuten) and Typhlodromus occidentalis (Nesbitt) were also found in the trees. In two of the orchards phytoseiids and European red mites, Panonychus ulmi (Koch), were sampled the following spring and summer. Amblyseius fallacis were found in the trees at bloom (10 May) and there was no evidence that they first increased in density in the ground cover and then colonized trees. Overwintering predator populations were repeatedly sampled in six orchards during autumn, winter, and spring 1991–1992. Amblyseius fallacis and T. pyri overwintered in high numbers in the trees. Amblyseius fallacis was also found in high numbers in the ground cover. Typhlodromus pyri also overwintered in the ground cover, but in lower numbers. Both predator species suffered high overwintering mortality, with that of T. pyri apparently less than that of A. fallacis . Treatment of ground vegetation with a pyrethroid insecticide in the spring did not affect arboreal A. fallacis densities during the summer; however, treatment of trees with the insecticide greatly reduced A. fallacis densities. In New York, ground cover in apple orchards directly beneath the trees does not appear to play a large role in the dynamics of A. fallacis .

Intraguild predation between Amblyseius swirskii and two native Chinese predatory mite species and their development on intraguild prey.
Scientific reports, 2016Co-Authors: Yingwei Guo, Jiang Xiaohuan, Wang Boming, Yulin Gao, Endong WangAbstract:Amblyseius swirskii, native to the east and southeast Mediterranean region, is a successful biological control agent of whiteflies. In this study, we investigated intraguild predations (IGP) between each stage of A. swirskii and each stage of two Phytoseiid species that occur in China, Amblyseius orientalis and Neoseiulus californicus. When there was no whitefly egg provided as the extraguild prey, IGP between A. swirskii and A. orientalis, and between A. swirskii and N. californicus, was observed in 10 and 20 out of 35 combinations, respectively. When IGP was observed, A. swirskii was the intraguild predator in 70% and 65% cases of A. orientalis and N. californicus predation, respectively. These results suggest that A. swirskii is a more aggressive intraguild predator compared to either A. orientalis or N. californicus. When whitefly eggs were provided as the extraguild prey, IGP between A. swirskii and N. californicus decreased greatly, but no significant decrease of IGP was observed between A. swirskii and A. orientalis. Amblyseius swirskii was able to complete development on both heterospecific predatory mites, and both heterospecific predatory mites completed their development on A. swirskii. Possible impacts that A. swirskii may have on local predatory mite populations in China are discussed.

Relationships between Phytoseiid Eggs, Developmental Success and Reproduction in Agistemus exsertus (Acari: Stigmaeidae)

M., Hussein H.Abstract:The biology of Agistemus exsertus Gonzalez was studied to determine the suitability of different phytoseiid eggs as prey. The development was faster and reproduction was higher when A. exsertus fed on eggs of Amblyseius lindquisti Schuster and Pritchard, Neoseiulus cucumeris (Oudemans) and Amblyseius zaheri Yousef and El borolossy (6.57 days and 111.5 eggs; 6.71 days and 110.1 eggs and 6.93 days and 101.0 eggs) than that of Euseius scutalis Athias-Henriot, Neoseiulus barkeri (Hughes) and Amblyseius swiriskii Athias-Henriot (8.6 days and 63.1 eggs; 7.29 days and 52.0 eggs and 7.87 days and 37.7 eggs), respectively. A. exsertus consumed daily more N. barkeri and A. zaheri eggs (4.63 and 3.85) than other phytoseiid eggs, respectively. Deits of A. lindquisti, N. cucumeris and E. scutalis (eggs) provided the greatest female longevity and the least was in case of N. barkeri

Suitability of the Pollen Grains, Ricinus communis and Helianthus annuus as Food for Six Species of Phytoseiid Mites (Acari: Phytoseiidae)

M.Abstract:Laboratory studies were conducted on the acceptability of pollen grains of Ricinus communis (L.) and Helianthus annuus L. to Amblyseius zaheri Yousef and El-Borolossy, Euseius yousefi Zaher and El-Borolossy, Amblyseius lindquisti Schuster and Pritchard, Typhlodromus balanites El-Badry, Typhlodromus sennarensis El-Badry and Amblyseius cabonus (Schicha) as indicated by effect on development, survival, oviposition and life table parameters. A. zaheri and E. yousefi had a shorter developmental period on both pollen grains than A. lindquisti. Development was not completed in case of T. balanites, T. sennarensis and A. cabonus. A. zaheri and E. yousefi showed the highest oviposition rate when fed R. communis compared to H. annuus. A. lindquisti failed to lay any eggs when fed on both pollen grains. On both predator species, a diet of R. communis provided the shortest generation time (T) relatively, greatest female longevity and mean total fecundity (f) which resulted in the highest net reproductive rate (Ro) value (41.46 and 43.28 expected females per female), intrinsic rate of increase (rm = 0.279 and 0.258) and finite rate of increase (er m = 1.322 and 1.294 per day) for A. zaheri and E. yousefi respectively

Influence of the Sweet Basil, Ocimum basilicum L. on Some Predacious Mites of the Family Phytoseiidae (Acari: Phytoseiidae)

A.Abstract:The direct toxicity of the essential oil, Ocimum basilicum L. to females of six species of predacious mites of the family phytoseiidae was tested. The phytoseiid mites tested namely, Typhlodromus athiasae Porath and Swirski, Euseius yousefi Zaher and El-Borolossy, Amblyseius zaheri Yousef and El-Borolossy, Amblyseius deleoni (Muma and Denmark), Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot and Amblyseius barkeri (Hughes). Sweet basil oil was highly toxic to females E. yousefi and was relatively intoxic to females A. swirskii. The essential oil has a close toxic effect for predator species, T. athiasae and A. barkeri. With the exception of A. zaheri, females of all predacious mites tested suffered a depression in reproduction and food consumption when treated with sweet basil oil at conc. 2%

A Comparative Study of the Effect of Some Mineral and Plant Oils on Two Predacious Mites of the Family Phytoseiidae (Acari: Phytoseiidae)

A.Abstract:The direct toxicity of some mineral and plant oils to adult females of the predacious mites, Amblyseius barkeri (Hughes) and Amblyseius zaheri Yousef and El-Borolossy were tested. KZ oil was the most toxic to females of A. barkeri and A. zaheri (LC50 = 0.391 and 0.308%, respectively). In contrast, Natur'l oil was relatively intoxic to females A. zaheri and A. barkeri. Bio-dux, Capl-2 and Natur'l oils have a close toxic effect for both predacious mites. Females of A. barkeri and A. zaheri suffered a depression in reproduction when sprayed with conc. = LC50 of each oil and kept on plant leaves previously treated with different oils. Laboratory studies indicated that the vegetable oil Natur'l oil was the least effective oil on all biological aspects of both predacious mites A. barkeri and A. zaheri in the laboratory

Influence of Mint and Peppermint on Tetranychus urticae and Some Predacious Mites of the Family Phytoseiidae (Acari: Tetranychidae: Phytoseiidae)

M.Abstract:The deterrent and toxicity effects of mint, Mentha virdis L. and peppermint, Mentha piperita L. on Tetranychus urticae Koch were studied under laboratory conditions. M. virdis was more potent for T. urticae than M. piperita, with a significant increase in repellency. Leaf discs treated with increasing concentrations of both materials showed reduction in the total numbers of eggs laid. A high percentage of T. urticae mortality was recorded in case of M. virdis. The direct toxicity of both essential oils to the female of the predacious mites namely Typhlodromus athiase Porath and Swirski Phytoseius finitimus Ribaga, Amblyseius barkeri (Hughes), Amblyseius zaheri Yousef and El-Borolossy, Amblyseius yousefi Zaher and El-Borolossy and Amblyseius deleoni (Muma and Denmark) were tested. At LC 50 level, M. virdis was the most toxic to females A. yousefi and the least to females T. athiasae. With the exception of A. zaheri, M. piperita proved to be more toxic to the predacious mites tested than M. virdis. The results obtained chemically and biologically, may suggest that the higher percentage of the hydrocarbons of M. virdis were responsible for the toxic effect
