    There are several print bibliographies that cover the geoscience literature before 1900. The Bibliography of North American Geology (1785-1948) was incorporated into GeoRef as a special project. However, other non-North American bibliographies, for example, Repertorium Commentationum a Societatibus Litterariis Editarum, 1665-1800; The Royal Society (Great Britain), Catalogue of Scientific Papers 1800-1900; Agassiz, Louis, Bibliographia Zoologiae et Geologiae, 1848; Catalogus Bibliothecae Historico-Naturalis Josephi Banks; Neues Jahrbuch fur Mineralogie, Geologie und Palaeontologie, 1830-1900; Bibliographia Geologica: 1896-1906; and Annuaire Geologique Universel: Revue de Geologie & Paleontology, 1885-1896 were not entered into GeoRef. Should they be included? Is coverage of major geological topics and/or journals missing from GeoRef? How accessible is the literature from this time period? As libraries move older material to remote storage, do we have the tools to find and recall this material, particularly the journal literature? The mathematicians are creating Electronic Research Archive for Mathematics, ERAM, a digital archive of the most important mathematical publications of the period 1868-1942 and a database based on the Jahrbuch uber die Fortschritte der Mathematik. Is a similar project feasible for the geosciences?

    Abstract:

    The Gulf of Mexico is an economically important basin with more than a century-long history of hydrocarbon exploration. However, the opening history of the basin remains debated for two reasons: 1) the quality of data does not allow for reliable interpretations of crustal features beneath thick and complex overburden, and 2) most industry well and geophysical data are proprietary. The last concerted effort by industry and academia to summarize the state of knowledge regarding the Gulf of Mexico’s formation was three decades ago and resulted in publication of a major volume as part of the Decade of North American Geology (DNAG). This paper reviews the key, publicly available, recently published geophysical datasets and geological observations that constrain the basin’s tectonic history. We compare and contrast published tectonic models and formulate remaining controversies about the basin. These relate to tectonic affiliation of Triassic redbeds (early syn-rift vs. precursor basin[s]), the timing of seafloor spreading vs. salt deposition, the nature of breakup (magma-rich vs. magma-poor), and remaining ambiguities in restoring crustal blocks to their pre-rift positions. We then speculate on the datasets that can help resolve these controversies. We conclude that continued collaborative industry and academia partnerships are crucial for advancing our understanding of how the Gulf of Mexico formed

    The anticipated letter announced its arrival with colourful geological postage stamps: botryoidal blue willemite (Zn2SiO4) and a cluster of orange wulfenite crystals (PbMO4) from Tsumeb, in northern Namibia; placer diamond mining at Oranjemund, mouth of the Orange River which divides Namibia in the south from South Africa (Fig. 1). I had moved to the University of Victoria from GSC six months earlier, and had responded to the NWT MDA-II (1992) call for projects with a proposal to map, with geochronologist Sam Bowring (MIT), the Archean basement rocks of south-ern Wopmay orogen and the adjacent Indin Lake greenstone belt of Slave craton. How different my future would have been had the proposal not been vetoed in Ottawa. My new academic freedom to work outside the country was now obligatory. The DNAG (Decade of North American Geology) project had tweaked my interest in Rodinia, the early Neoproterozoic supercontinent, and its partial reincarnation as Gond-wana (Hoffman 1991). Andy Knoll at Harvard was drawing attention to emerging carbon and strontium isotope data from Neoproterozoic carbonate rocks, which provide a means of global correlation and suggested a causal rela-tionship between Rodinia breakup and the unusual association of sedimentary banded iron-formation (BIF) and gla-cial diamictite on the one hand, and between Gondwana assembly, increased oxygenation and the radia-tion of animals on the other (Knoll 1991; Knoll and Walter 1992). John Grotzinger (MIT), who had just begun a project on the latest Proterozoic (Nama Group) in southern Namibia (Fig. 2), suggested that the Geological Survey of Namibia (GSN), eager to encourage mineral exploration after more than 20 years of guerrilla war-fare, would welcome a Wopmay-style mapping project in northern Namibia, where a 600-km-long fold belt of late (but not latest) Neoproterozoic car-bonates, the Otavi Group, hosts the Cu-Pb-Zn-V-Ge ore deposits aroun
