    Nine species of Fungi on the aquatic weed Sagittaria montevidensis (arrowhead) in southern and southeastern Brazil were collected, identified, described and illustrated in a survey for possible biological control agents against this weed. Seven of them are Anamorphic Fungi, Alternaria alternata, Botrytis cinerea, Cercospora apii, Cercospora sagittariae, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Plectosporium alismatis and Pseudocercospora arthrospora, and two smut Fungi, Doassansiopsis deformans and Narasimhania alismatis. All represent new host records or new geographic localities for occurrences of the Fungi. Pseudocercospora arthrospora is new to science. It differs from known species of genus Pseudocercospora mainly by its subhyaline and disarticulating conidia and host. This fungus is close to Thedgonia but can be distinguished for this genus by its conidiogenesis.     taxonomy of Anamorphic Fungi. Fungal Diversity 26: 1-54. Fungal systematics is an essential part of biological research especially in the context of its ecological and economic implications. The classification of pleomorphic and non-pleomorphic anamorphs, however, is unsettled, which can be attributed to the historical practice of the dual nomenclature/classification system. This paper reviews the historical establishment and limitations of the dual system of classification, and narrates the possible utilities of DNA sequence-data in developing a system of classification based on evolutionary relationships. The dual classification system is a failed hypothesis. DNA sequence-data are now routinely used to link anamorphs with a holomorph and to provide phylogenetic placement for anamorphs with unknown teleomorphs. Emerging phylogenetic and nomenclatural scenarios in the Botryosphaeriales, Chaetosphaeriales, Fusarium graminearum, pestalotiopsis-like anamorphs, and the Mycosphaerella complex are illustrated to indicate potential nomenclatural and taxonomic complexities associated with the dual nomenclature/classification system.     A complilation of Anamorphic names for both Ascomycota and Basidiomycota is provided which comprises 2895 genera. The genera are listed against a backbone of teleomorphic relationships where known. The study reveals that 73 genera and 95 anamorph-like genera are linked to teleomorphic genera names, 447 genera (three anamorph-like genera) are linked to teleomorph families, orders or classes, while for more than 1592 (55%) genera no teleomorph link is known. The links are based on the literature and often because Fungi were found in association, but have not been proven by molecular data. Many are based on links with species other than the generic type and thus must be considered questionable for the genus. A considerable effort is needed to establish whether these links are correct.

    Eighty-one genera and 152 species of Anamorphic Fungi were found on dead leaves of Pandanaceae, collected in 14 countries (Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Fiji, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nepal, New Zealand, Niue, Philippines, Seychelles, Vanuatu, Vietnam). This includes three new genera of Anamorphic Fungi (Dichotophora, Ramicapitulum, Sporotretophora) and 20 new species (Arthrowallemia lammaensis, Berkleasmium atroapicale, Cryptophiale fruticetum, Cryptophiale hamulata, Dichotophora asetosa, Dichotophora setiramosa, Dictyosporium acroinflatum, Dictyosporium pandani, Endophragmiella pandani, Endophragmiella queenslandica, Gliomastix pandani, Hemicorynespora mauritiana, Ityorhoptrum sphaericosporum, Mycoleptodiscus freycinetiae, Ramicapitulum chinense, Ramoconidiifera seychellensis, Spadicoides australiensis, Spegazzinia cruciata, Sporotretophora punctata, Thozetella serrata). The new combination Berkleasmium monilicellulare and new name Ramoconidiifera neonominata are also proposed. Each genus is headed with a full bibliographic reference, type species and its associated bibliographic reference, a brief characterisation and discussion regarding taxonomic issues of importance within the genus, and reference to preceding work within the genus. Specimens identified as currently known species are written up with bibliographic details, some relevant measurements of the current specimens, known habitat and distribution, collection details, and a discussion regarding the taxonomic conclusions drawn. Any additional information deemed to be of taxonomic importance is noted, especially if the current specimens differ morphologically or dimensionally from the original described specimen. Taxa confirmed as new to science are written up with a full description, etymology of the specific epithet, known habitat and distribution, collection details, and a discussion of relevant details defending the introduction of a new taxon. New taxa are illustrated with a photographic plate showing macro- and microscopic details relevant to the specimen in question. Keys and/or synoptic tables are provided to all species in 28 genera.

    Abstract:

    At the time when there is a move towards the acceptance of one name for one biological fungal species, Fungal Diversity documents the importance of Anamorphic Fungi with a special issue devoted to them. The present issue comprises 13 papers devoted to various topics concerning the Anamorphic Fungi with contributions on phylogeny, chemistry, ecology, post harvest importance, molecular detection and descriptions of some plant pathogens. The first paper is a review of the biogeography and phylogeography of Fusarium. This important paper questions several trends in the understanding of this important genus which causes a wide variety of plant diseases, produces a number of mycotoxins and is becoming increasingly recognized as a significant human pathogen. The authors look at several examples where surveys of non agro-systems question the present understanding of this extraordinary genus and must be read. The second paper is also a review of the chemical and bioactive producing capabilities of the remarkable genus Pestalotiopsis. This mostly endophytic genus is especially productive with regard to the accumulation of a diverse array of mostly bioactive compounds. More than 130 different compounds with antifungal, antimicrobial, and antitumor activities have been isolated from various species of this amazing genus. The third and fourth papers deal with post harvest topics. Colletotrichum gloeosporioides was previously reported to be the casual agent of anthracnose of most tropical fruits. This taxon, however, was recently epitypified and has been shown to be a species complex. A molecular study of isolates from Laos and Thailand causing anthracnose of eight tropical fruits shows that species other than C. gloeosporioides are responsible for anthracnose of most tropical fruits. This astounding result illustrates an urgent need to carry out research on re-inventory of tropical plant pathogens and should result in an unprecedented increase in phytopathogen research. Thirty one species belonging to 17 fungal genera were found to be associated with sorghum grain samples imported to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. These Anamorphic Fungi are important post harvest organisms producing important mycotoxins. The papers recommends that rigorous quarantine and healthy storage conditions should be undertaken to minimize fungal contamination and prevent further hazard to human and animal health. Papers five to seven deal with assessing fungal biodiversity from environmental samples using molecular analysis. Sette et al. profiled the fungal community structure found in a Brazilian energy transmission tower with signs of corrosion and/or biofilm formation using cloning (ITS-rRNA gene libraries), a culture-dependent technique. A total of 31 isolates comprising ten filamentous Fungi and four yeasts were recovered from enrichment cultures showing the usefulness of this method. Klaubauf et al. were also successfully able to use RFLP and sequence analysis of clone libraries of the partial ITS/LSU-region as a culture-independent method to survey fungal diversity in four arable soils and one grassland in Lower Austria.     This article describes two new Anamorphic Fungi from freshwater habitats, Dictyosporium tetrasporum sp. nov. and Exserticlava yunnanensis sp. nov., based on morphological characters. Both species are illustrated with light micrographs and compared with similar taxa. Pseudofuscophialis lignicola and Pseudobotrytis terrestris are reported as new records from freshwater habitats.

    Natonodosa is introduced as new genus based on morphology and multigene phylogenetic data, and the monotypic genus Natonodosa, typified by N. speciosa, is characterized by mononematous conidiophores, polyblastic, nodose conidiogenous cells and unicellular, fusiform, hyaline conidia. The other freshly collected material was identified as Poroisariopsis inornata, a species that since its original description had not been reported; it is characterized by synnematous conidiophores with polytretic, cylindrical and uncinate conidiogenous cells with percurrent extensions, and distoseptate, obclavate, brown conidia. A lectotype and an epitype for the species are established and referred since the original specimen of this microfungus has not been found in any herbarium. Placement of both taxa in Xylariales was ascertained by BLASTn searches. Maximum likelihood analysis of the combined sequence data of the ribosomal rDNA (ITS and partial LSU region), as well as partial gene regions coding for the second largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (RPB2) and beta-tubulin (TUB2), was performed. In addition, a new name, Guarroa, is proposed for replacing the illegitimate genus name Phaeobotrys M. Calduch, Gene & Guarro. A dichotomous key to the new genus and morphologically similar taxa is provided.

    During an investigation of Anamorphic Fungi on tropical plant debris from the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, two new species in the genera Hughesinia and Stachybotryna were described. Additionally, 15 other Anamorphic Fungi were determined; five of them are newly recorded for Mexico. Hughesinia heterospora sp. nov. is characterized by conidiophores macronematous light brown, conidiogenous cells monotretic and dark brown, muriform conidia which differ from other species of Hughesinia in having great morphological heterogeneity. Stachybotryna variegata sp. nov. is characterized by conidiophores macronematous light brown, variegated setae, brown below and hyaline towards the apex, conidiogenous cells monophialidic and ellipsoidal to broadly fusiform, guttulate, hyaline conidia. Descriptions, illustrations and keys are provided.

    Forty seven fungal strains were isolated from plant debris in the tropical regions of Mexico, where fifteen of them were identified to species and twenty two to genus level. All isolates were grown in fermented rice and their EtOAc extracts screened against ten targets, four bacteria (Bacillus subtilis,Erwinia carotovora, Staphylococcus aureus and Xanthomonas campestris), the yeast Candida albicans, three phytopathogenic Fungi (Alternaria tagetica, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides andFusarium oxysporum), the Oomycete Pythium aphanidermatum and the nematode Meloidogyne incognita. Antimicrobial activity was detected in 18 isolates against at least one of the target strains tested. Seven of these isolates with broad spectrum activity, which were defatted and their minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined by microdilution assay. The greatest antagonistic action was produced by Cylindrium elongatum with broad spectrum activity while Corynespora cassiicola and Memnoniella sp. MR33 showed moderate antimicrobial properties. On other hand, in vitro nematotoxic activity was clearly detected only in Selenosporella sp. GH26 with 91 (LD50) and 147 µg/ml (LD90). This is the first report on the isolation and biological evaluation of Anamorphic Fungi from some Mexican tropical regions, demonstrating their potential as a source of biologically active natural metabolites for use in future applications in agriculture or pharmacy.   Key words: Anamorphic Fungi, antimicrobial, Corynespora, Cylindrium, fungal extracts, nematicide,Selenosporella, Yucatan peninsula.
