The pollination ecology of the blackberry (Rubus sp.) was studied by means of determining its reproductive system, the analysis of flower's nectar production. Sampling the insects that visit the flower of blackberry in a cultivated area and analysis of pollination behavior. The experiments were carried out in an area of blackberry crop, in December of 2005 in the city of Timbó (SC), Southern Brazil. The highest fruit set (48.3% ± 3,2) occurred in the free pollination (natural) treatment where insects were not excluded. The occurrence of selfing was verified, however with o lower fruit set (12.2% ± 4,9). Anemophily was not observed in the species. The nectar evaluation in Rubus sp. resulted in values compatible with the melit tophily syndrome. Bees (Hymenoptera) were the main floral visitors collected and observed on the flowers of Rubus sp., representing 97% of the individuals. They initiate the foraging activity at 8 a.m., with a peak activity at 12 a.m. and declining until 4 p.m. in the survey were sampled 1.360 bees, belonging to four families and 13 species. Halictidae was the family with highest amount of species (N = 7) and Apidae most abundant (1.288 individuals) in the survey. Apidae was mainly represented by Apis mellifera, which is a exotic species, whose sample was of 1.246 individuals. The data of the abundance and the observation of its behavior, pointed A. mellifera as the main pollinator of Rubus sp, in the studied area, but also confirms that the other native species of bees, participate in the pollination process of Rubus sp

caracterizacao funcional do sistema reprodutivo da aroeira vermelha schinus terebinthifolius raddi em florianopolis sc brasil
Revista Brasileira De Fruticultura, 2004Co-Authors: Mauricio Lenzi, Afonso Inacio OrthAbstract:Dioecy, as the reproductive system of S. terebinthifolius (Anacardiaceae), was investigated in an area with human interference and in a sandbank area, in the municipal district of Florianopolis, SC. During two reproductive periods the following pollination tests were performed: open pollination and manual cross-pollination have been developed in plants of both sexes, and tests of Anemophily, agamospermy and parthenogenesis, accomplished only in female plants. Pollen grains have been germinated in different sucrose concentrations to verify their viability. The pollination treatments that resulted into fruit set were the open pollination, with the greatest average of 45%, and manual cross-pollination, with the greatest average of 56,2%. The other pollination tests did not result in fruit set, showing that the reduced gynoecium of the male flowers is not functional, proving dioecy of the species, neither the species is anemophilic, nor apomitic, and it does not present partenocarpy. The pollen/ovule ratio between a male and a female flower was high (99,267:1), classifying the species as xenogamic.

Caracterização funcional do sistema reprodutivo da aroeira-vermelha (Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi), em Florianópolis-SC, Brasil Characterization of the functional reproductive system of the pink-pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi), in Florianópolis, SC, Brazil
Dioecy, as the reproductive system of S. terebinthifolius (Anacardiaceae), was investigated in an area with human interference and in a sandbank area, in the municipal district of Florianópolis, SC.
We aimed to analyze pollination and dispersal syndrome distribution among strata and between edge and interior of semideciduous montane forest fragments at Fazenda Bela Vista (46º52'W; 22º47'S, 750-850 m a.s.l.), Pedreira municipality, São Paulo state, SE Brazil. During weekly visits from August/1997 to October/1998 we classified the pollination and dispersal syndromes of 151 tree and shrub species with dbh > 3 cm in the upper (height > 9 m), intermediate and lower (height < 4.5 m) strata and at the edge (50 m strip) and interior of three forest fragments (100 ha). The bee-pollination syndrome (melittophily) predominated, followed by non-specialized syndromes, phalaenophily, myiophily, psycophily, chiropterophily, ornithophily, cantharophily, and Anemophily. Anemophilous, chiropterophilous and ornithophilous species were more frequent in open environments, and melittophilous species tended to occur in the upper stratum. Zoochoric syndromes predominated, followed by anemochoric and autochoric syndromes. Anemochoric and autochoric species were more frequent in open environments and predominated in the upper strata in the forest interior. Different pollination and dispersal syndromes are associated with different environments and forest strata

dioecy and wind pollination in pernettya rigida ericaceae of the juan fernandez islands
Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2000Co-Authors: Gregory J Anderson, Gabriel Bernardello, Patricio Lopez, Todd F Stuessy, Daniel J CrawfordAbstract:Abstract Pernettya rigida is endemic to the Juan Fernandez archipelago. Although all flowers are complete, with seemingly fertile stamens and pistils, differences in fruit production and detailed field, anatomical, and morphological studies indicate they are functionally unisexual, and the species is consequently dioecious. A comparison of 15 features demonstrated significant differences between the sexes. The populational sex ratio is 1:1. Nectaries located between the filaments produce small amounts of floral nectar with similar sugar composition in both sexes. There are x=33,357 (or x=133,429) pollen tetrads (or pollen grains)/male flower and x=109 ovules/female flower. No tetrads in either hand self-pollinated or open pollinated male flowers showed any pollen germination. Tetrads on open- and hand-pollinated female flowers germinate. Female flowers do not show autogamy or apomixis. During more than 80 hours of field observation, we recorded only seven floral visitors (representing three insect species). In spite of this, open-pollinated female flowers have abundant fruit and seed-set. Thus, we conclude that pollen is transferred abiotically and the ever-present wind over the exposed ridges of the islands is the likely dispersal agent. A number of anemophilous features, such as dry pollen and exposed habitat, support this conclusion. Thus, dioecy and Anemophily have evolved independently, in situ , in this species in this remote locality. Preservation of habitat and elimination of competitive invasives are the primary conservation challenges.

Merostachys riedeliana Rupr. is a long-lived monocarp species common in the understorey of tropical semideciduous forest fragments in the south of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Its floral biology and breeding system were studied and compared with others bamboos. Due to its rhizome, it occurs in clumps and has a remarkable capacity for vegetative multiplication, which ceases a few months before the emergence of the first inflorescences. The beginning of the flowering and the death of the entire population occurred respectively on October 1998 and May 1999. The peak of the blooming episode took place during the hot and rainy months of the year (December and January). Each inflorescence produces in average 29 spikelets, which have hermaphrodite florets with three stamens and two plumose stigmas that are exposed during theanthesis. The abundant pollen is easily released by the wind or visitors. Apis mellifera L. and Trigona spinipes (F.) were the commonest visitors and behave as pollen thieves. These bees occasionally act as devices for dispersion of pollen, through vibration produced in the anthers. The excess of rain during flowering and the lack of wind in the understorey of the forest constrain the effectiveness of the Anemophily. However, several morphological characters of the flowers, leaf fall and dense clumps tend to expect for wind pollination. Also, the auto-incompatibility index (0.99) showed that M. riedeliana is an autocompatible bamboo. So the auto-incompatibility does not favour the formation of fruits in vegetal clones, and the autocompatibility could result in the high production of seeds. Therefore the possible occurrence of clones of M. riedeliana in the forest fragments, due to the effective vegetative growth and the 30-32 years cyclic flowering intervals, might explain the high investment on spikelets production and autocompatible fruits formation
