This study reports the occurrence of Lasioderma serricorne (Coleoptera: Anobiidae) in packaged seeds of black Sesamum indicum. An intact plastic pot of S. indicum seeds was purchased by a consumer in a supermarket in Divinopolis, Minas Gerais state, Brazil, in April 2014 and was kept at his home for 3 months. Two hundred adults of this insect (196 dead and 4 alive) were counted in the pot with the seeds, besides three live larvae. This insect fed on S. indicum seeds, making them unfit for consumption. L. serricorne feed on and reproduce in S. indicum seeds stored in plastic packaging.

One intact package (10 cm wide × 15 cm long) of M. recutita infested by L. serricorne was purchased in a supermarket in Vicosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. In this sample this insect had fed on the dried parts (inflorescences and rods), which made the product unfit for human consumption. This 20 g sample included 101 live and 4 dead Lasioderma serricorne. Circumstantial evidence suggested that the infested material was probably harvested from an infested field in Apr 2013 and packaged with L. serricorne eggs, and that these had developed into the adults found in the package.

Um pacote intacto (10 cm de largura × 15 cm de comprimento) de M. recutita , infestado por L. serricorne , foi comprado em um supermercado em Vicosa, Minas Gerais, Brasil. Este inseto se alimentou das partes secas (inflorescencias e hastes) dessa planta, o que tornou o produto improprio para consumo. (Coleoptera: Anobiidae) in the laboratory. L. serricorne is the most destructive insect pest ever found on stored tobacco. The experimental delineation had 33 arenas being each experimental unit with 11 arenas of experiments with eggs, larva of L. serricorne with the density of T. putrescentiae maintained constant, where from 11 of these arenas, eight were for the analysis of predation and three to evaluate the natural mortality of the insect. The highest predation rate was found during the larval stage with, approximately, 54, 68 and 78% mortality of L. serricorne from the fourth until the sixty day of predation. These results indicated that it was possible to use the predatory mite T. putrescentiae in pest management programs of L. serricorne in the storage units of tobacco.

There are few studies with regards to the biology of this insect, perhaps because T. herbarius feeds on different resources, being this study an important feature to control the pest. The biological parameters of T. herbarius were studied in two different diets: blotting paper and wheat meal plus yeast extract. Four instars were obtained on both diets. The length of the larval period and adult longevity were shorter while the pupal period was longer when the insects fed on blotting paper. In both diets mortality was high, over 50%. Female fecundity was 3.3 ± 3.93 eggs per female for blotting paper and 12.1 ± 12.61 for wheat meal plus yeast extract. The sex rate was 0.5 for both diets. Wheat meal plus yeast extract is the best diet for rearing the book borer T. herbarius.

(Coleoptera: Anobiidae) was conducted at the Laboratory of Research center for Biological Control (RCBC), Gadjah Mada University, under room temperature of 26.55±0.72oC–30.66±0.40oC and 57.38±5.53% relative humidity. The materials tested were seventh materials of stored products in their original and flour form. No Choice Method and Free Choice Method were to determine the applied host range and host specificity. New generation of S. paniceum produced from a material was used to indicate that the material was its host. The results showed that the main host of S. paniceum was coriander, and its alternative hosts were caraway seed, rice, dry ginger, candlenut, and nutmeg, while S. paniceum could not survive on pepper. The results showed that egg, larval and pupal stages of S. paniceum were 9.15±1.3735.97±5.53 and 5.80±0.54 days, respectively. Females laid eggs firstly at 5 days old, hence, the life cycle was 55.92 days. The female produced eggs for 4.691-3.42 days, as many as 13.6799.39 eggs. The eggs were laid in the coriander seedsup to more than 50 eggs per seed, but only 68.54±-29.27% out of them hatched and one to three individuals of them developed into adult. Larvae and pupae lived in the coriander seeds or in the coriander powder. The adults did not eat and could survive for. 27.90±18.71 days, but could cause damage by making exit holes on the coriander seeds. The pest might cause coriander damage up to 80%. FieldsAbstract:Abstract This study investigated the efficacy of DE, pea protein, methoprene, pyrethrins and DEET at label rates to reduce penetration of stored-product insect Lasioderma serricorne (F.) (Coleoptera: Anobiidae) to jute and polyethylene woven bags. The survival of eggs and young larvae of L. serricorne were measured. The insecticides caused 27–67% mortality of eggs and larvae. There was no difference between insecticides, but all caused higher mortality than controls. A second test measured the ability of adults to penetrate the jute and polyethylene materials treated with the various insecticides. After 24 h, approximately 85% of adults L. serricorne had penetrated through the untreated jute and polyethylene materials. Fewer insects penetrated through the treated jute materials; DEET (12.5 ± 4.8%), pyrethrins (20 ± 4%), methoprene (30 ± 4%), pea protein (42.5 ± 4.8%), and DE (52.5 ± 4.8%). While, the percentage of adults L. serricorne penetrated the treated polyethylene materials were; DEET (20 ± 4%), pyrethrins (35 ± 6.4%), methoprene (50 ± 4%), pea protein (62.5 ± 4.8%), and DE (62.5 ± 4.8%). A third test measured the ability of insecticides to prevent the infestation of flour in jute and polyethylene bags. Fewer insects emerged from flour in jute and polyethylene bags treated with insecticides. All insecticides reduced infestation from 49 to 83%, with DEET being the most effective.

Because infections of these bacteria can alter the reproduction and biology of the host, there is interest in the potential use of Wolbachia to control populations of pest species. To advance this research, we screened 38 species (88 populations from 16 countries) of stored-product insect pests for Wolbachia infections. Infections were detected in nine species of Coleoptera (Anobiidae – Lasioderma serricorne (Fabricius), Stegobium paniceum (Linnaeus); Curculionidae – Sitophilus oryzae (Motschulsky), Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky; Dermestidae – Attagenus unicolor (Brahm), Dermestes lardarius Linnaeus; Silvanidae – Oryzaephilus mercator (Fauvel), Oryzaephilus surinamensis (Linnaeus); Tenebrionidae – Tribolium confusum Jaquelin Du Val), one species of Hymenoptera (Trichogrammatidae – Trichogramma deion Pinto & Oatman), and one species of Lepidoptera (Pyralidae – Ephestia kuehniella Zeller). Phylogenetic analyses based on wsp gene sequences identified all Wolbachia isolates as members of Supergroups A or B. Additional sequences for the genes gatB, coxA, hcpA, fbpA and ftsZ were obtained for use in multilocus sequence typing (MLST) to identify the sequence types to which the isolates belonged. Our results identify five new Wolbachia-insect associations and support previous findings that infections of Wolbachia in stored-product insect pests are members of Supergroups A or B.

Effect of High and Low Temperatures on the Drugstore Beetle (Coleoptera: Anobiidae)

Heat tolerance for different stages from highest to lowest was young larvae, old larvae, eggs, adult, and pupae. The mortality after 7 h at 42°C for young larvae, old larvae, eggs, adults, and pupae, respectively, was 16 ± 5, 31 ± 6, 48 ± 3, 63 ± 8, and 86 ± 2% (mean ± SEM). Similar trends for stage specific mortality were seen with the lethal time for 90% mortality (LT90) at 42°C; 773,144,12, and 11 h for old larvae, eggs, adults, and pupa respectively. Mortality was too low with young larvae to estimate LT90. The LT90 for young larvae at 42, 45, 50, 55, and 60°C was 25, 20, 3.9, 0.18, and 0.08 h, respectively. Development and comparison of two models to predict survival rates of young larvae of Stegobium paniceum (L.) (Coleoptera: Anobiidae) under heat treated temperatures

AbdelghanyAbstract:Predicting mortality or survival rate of insects at heat treatment temperatures is critical for commercial heat treatment of food and storage facilities. Two models were developed to predict the survival rate of young larvae of drugstore beetle, Stegobium paniceum (L.) (Coleoptera: Anobiidae) under steady state or transient temperature condition: modified fundamental kinetic model and modified complementary log-log transformation model. Published young larvae mortalities and raw data of the temperature history, determined at different heat treatment temperatures, were used to develop these models. The models were verified and compared by using the field data collected in a medium sized mill. Both of the developed models overestimated the insect mortality in the mill when temperature was > 53°C and underestimated insect mortality when temperature was < 50°C. The lowest mean of the absolute difference between the predicted and measured insect mortality in the mill was 16.7±1.1% which was generated by using the modified complementary log-log transformation model. The control of the drugstore beetle, Stegobium paniceum (Coleoptera: Anobiidae) with high and low temperatures

Botanicals have been used in the health care system to improve blood circulation, reduce chronic fever and cure chronic constipation (Golob et al., 1999; Samy et al., 2008). The drugstore beetle, Stegobium paniceum (L.) (Coleoptera: Anobiidae), is a pest of stored medicinal and aromatic plants and one of the most common insects found in botanical warehouses (Abdelghany et al., 2010). Generally, mortality of each stage increased with an increase of temperature and exposure time. Heat tolerance for different stages from highest to lowest was; young larvae, old larvae, eggs, adult and pupae. The mortality after 7 h, at 42oC for young larvae, old larvae, eggs, adult and pupae respectively was; 16 ± 5, 31 ± 6, 48 ± 3, 63 ± 8 and 86 ± 2% (mean + SEM). Similarly, the lethal time for 90% mortality (LT>sub>90) at 42oC was; too low to estimate, 773, 144, 12 and 11 h. The LT 90 value for young larvae at 42, 45, 50, 55 and 60oC was 25, 20, 3.9, 0.18 and 0.08 h respectively. The cold tolerance of different stages at 0oC from highest to lowest was adult, old larva, young larva, pupa, and egg. The LT 90 at 0oC was 298, 153, 151, 89 and 53 h, respectively. The LT90 value for adults at 5, -5, -10 and -15oC was 792, 58, 2 and 0.8 h, respectively. The supercooling point of adults, young larvae, old larvae and pupae was -15.2 ± 2oC, -9.0 ± 0.8oC, -6.5 ± 0.5oC, and -4.0 ± 1.4oC respectively. Heat treatments that control young larvae should control all other stages of S. paniceum . Cold treatments that control adults should control all other stages of S. paniceum . Dried plants stored at 5oC for 45 days or 42oC for 30 h and then kept below 18oC throughout the rest of the year, should remain pest-free without any chemical control. Kuntze [Fabaceae]), hairy beggarticks (Bidens pilosa L. [Asteraceae]) and elderberry (Sambucus peruviana HBK [Caprifoliaceae]), on adults of Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky 1855 (Curculionidae) and Stegobium paniceum (Linnaeus 1761) (Anobiidae) in mortality bioassays at laboratory conditions were evaluated. At the highest concentrations of watery extracts (20 % w/v) used to C. sativum, C. spinosa, B. pilosa and S. peruviana did not show significant effects in comparison to control on both species of weevils. Only dry dusts of C. sativum showed 25 % of mortality of S. zeamais and however C. spinosa produced 15 % of mortality of S. paniceum at the higher concentrations assayed (1.6 g ·10 g of corn -1 ). In addition, when C. spinosa, was evaluated in infusion watery (20 % w/v) on S. zeamais, 17.5 % of mortality was found. However, none of the plants in all formulations employed had more than 40 % mortality on two species of weevils in comparison to control. The possibilities of integration of biocide plants in control of agricultural stored product pests are analyzed.

Kuntze (Fabaceae), amor seco Bidens pilosa L. (Asteraceae) y sauco Sambucus peruviana HBK (Caprifoliaceae) sobre adultos de Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky 1885 (Curculionidae) y Stegobium paniceum (Linnaeus 1761) (Anobiidae) en bioensayos de mortandad bajo condiciones de laboratorio. A las maximas concentraciones empleadas (20 % p/v), los extractos acuosos de C. sativum, C. spinosa, B. pilosa y S. peruviana no mostraron efectos significativos en comparacion con el control sobre ambas especies de gorgojos. Solo los polvos secos de C. sativum produjeron un 25 % de mortandad en S. zeamais, y en cambio, C. sativum ocasiono sobre S. paniceum, un 15 % de mortandad, a las mas altas dosis ensayadas (1,6 g ·10 g de maiz-1). En adicion, al evaluar C. spinosa, bajo infusion acuosa (20 % p/v) sobre S. zeamais se produjo un 17,5 % de mortandad. Sin embargo, ninguna de las cuatro plantas bajo todas las formulaciones evaluadas obtuvo mas de 40 % de mortandad en las dos especies de gorgojos en comparacion con el control. Nuevas especies del género Trichodesma LeConte, 1861 y Gastrallus Jacquelin du Val, 1860, del sur de África (Coleoptera, Anobiidae)

Most of these species were collected at the National Kruger Park, South Africa. As we found specimens of males of the Xyletininae, Xyletinastidius tessellatus (Español, 1971) and of the Dorcatominae, Stagetodes australis Español & Viñolas, 1995, these are described here as only females of genus Xyletinastidius (Español & Comas, 1991) and the two species were described previously. Así mismo, al localizar en la misma, machos del Xyletininae, Xyletinastidius tessellatus (Español, 1971) y del Dorcatominae, Stagetodes australis Español & Viñolas, 1995, nos permite realizar la descripción de los mismos, ya que el género Xyletinastidius Español & Comas, 1991 y ambas especies fueron descritas anteriormente sólo con hembras. As we found specimens of males of the Xyletininae, Xyletinastidius tessellatus (Español, 1971) and of the Dorcatominae, Stagetodes australis Español & Viñolas, 1995, these are described here as only females of genus Xyletinastidius (Español & Comas, 1991) and the two species were described previously
