Anthropic Activity markers and spatial variability: an ethnoarchaeological experiment in a domestic unit of Northern Gujarat (India)

AjithprasadAbstract:Spatio-temporal understanding of past domestic activities is a key aspect of archaeological reasoning. The identification of markers of particular Anthropic actions through time has become a fundamental issue. Chemical analyses of archaeological floors are an essential tool to investigate and identify Anthropic markers of past human activities. This paper explores the relative spatial variability of chemical residues of floors in an ethnographic context to provide a constructive basis to experiment with spatial analysis for the detection and interpretation of Anthropic Activity markers. These markers are recognised as anomalies and tendencies in the relative spatial distribution of chemical residues embedded in the floor. The experiment has been carried out in a controlled environment and serves to test the methods and assumptions to be used in archaeological contexts. Spatial interpolations (IDW, Map Algebra and PCA) were performed and allowed the identification of anomalies in the distribution of residues that can be associated with specific activities (fuel use, food preparation and consumption, use of fireplaces). Geostatistics (Ordinary and Regression Kriging) was used in order to contribute to the identification of trends related to the use of space and the connected activities (e.g. inner versus outer space, storage versus cooking). The results show how the integration of different techniques can improve data interpretation.

Human disturbance may affect colonial birds causing a decrease in reproductive success and population size. Breeding colonies of Phalacrocorax atriceps and P. magellanicus, are one of the major tourist attractions of Ushuaia city and the number of tourist vessels visiting colonies increased in recent years. We aim to evaluate if there is an influence of human activities on the distribution and abundance of Cormorantsand Shagscolonies and individuals at sea in the Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego. Explanatory variables from Anthropic source, such as distance to the vessels route, and environmental variables, as adequate substrate type to nest and bathymetry, for each species were defined and related to the data recorded of the size of both species colonies and the feeding distribution. Allocation of colonies and distribution at sea of P. atriceps and P. magellanicus in the Beagle Channel were not affected by tourism activities. Abundance of P. magellanicus at the colonies was associated to islands with a large surface of rocky cliffs available for nesting. Distribution of P. atriceps at sea was related to shallow waters. Although no anthropogenic impact was noticed in our study, given the increase in boat traffic and tourism, more specific and long term studies are encouraged to provide the precise and site- specific guidelines for a sustainable tourism management allowing seabird conservation.

Zooarqueología del sitio Beltrán cementerio, Santiago del Estero

Robles, Santiago del Estero). Este sitio ha sido excavado a mediados del siglo XX por Maldonado Bruzzone, Olimpia Righetti y Hauenschild. El sitio se distingue por la presencia de montículos que interrumpen el paisaje en la proximidad de un paleocauce del Río Dulce. En los trabajos de campo desarrollados durante el 2006 se recuperaron fragmentos cerámicos, en mayor proporción de tipo Sunchitúyoj y escasos asignados a Averías, además de 1.707 restos arqueofaunísticos procedentes de 16 m2 de excavación, donde se obtuvieron fechados radiocarbónicos entre 670 ± 60 años AP y 370 ± 70 años AP. Se realizó el análisis tafonómico para poder diferenciar los taxones que ingresaron al sitio por la actividad antrópica; en este sentido, sólo 8 de 17 presentan alguna evidencia al respecto (aunque sea indirecta); entre estos, moluscos, peces, reptiles como Tupinambis sp., Aves indeterminadas y Rhea americana, mamíferos como Chaetophractus vellerosus, Lama sp. y Dolichotis patagonum. Se destacan por su cantidad los restos de peces y camélidos, siendo los taxones que más aportaron a la subsistencia en el sitio de estudio.We will present the archaeofaunal analysis of the site Beltrán Cementerio, located in the town of Beltrán (Robles Dept., Santiago del Estero). This site has been excavated in the mid-twentieth century by Maldonado Bruzzone, Olympia Righetti and Hauenschild. This site, near the ancient riverbed of the Río Dulce, can be distinguished by the presence of mounds that interrupt the landscape. During the fieldwork of 2006, several ceramic fragments were found, most of them assigned to the Sunchitúyoj type, along with some scarce Averías fragments. Also, 1707 archeofaunal remains were extracted from the excavated area of 16 m2 , and were radiocarbon dated between 670 ±60 years BP and 370 ± 70 years BP. A taphonomic analysis was carried out to determine the different taxa present in the site as the result of Anthropic Activity. Only 8 out of 17 taxa show some evidence (including indirect evidence) of this; among these we can find mollusks, fishes, reptiles as Tupinambis sp., non-determined bird species and Rhea americana, mammals like Chaetophractus vellerosus, Lama sp. and Dolichotis patagonum. There is an outstanding amount of fish and camelid remains, which would indicate that those taxa contributed the most to the subsistence in this site.Apresentamos o análise dos restos arqueofaunisticos do sítio arqueológico Beltrán Cementerio, localizado em Beltrán (Depto.
