    Abstract:

    A suitable host provides, at least, the minimum nutritional and physiological conditions for the development of the imma- ture stages of a parasitoid. Host quality may influence the developmental time, mortality rate, longevity and fecundity of parasitoids. This work evaluates the suitability and quality of Aphis gossypii Glover, Brevicoryne brassicae (Linne), Myzus persicae (Sulzer), Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch) and Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) as hosts for Aphidius Colemani Viereck. Twenty second-instar nymphs of each aphid species were exposed to parasitism for one hour, and then kept in a climatic chamber at 22 ± 1°C, 70 ± 10% RH and a 12 h photophase. The aphid B. brassicae was unsuitable for the development of A. Colemani. The different aphid host spe- cies varied in size: M. persicae > (R. maidis = S. graminum) > A. gossypii. Parasitoid fitness decreased accordingly when reared on (M. persicae = R. maidis) > S. graminum > A. gossypii. Large hosts seem to be better than small hosts based on parasitoid size. Egg load of A. Colemani was related probably more on the ability of the parasitoid larva to obtain nutritional resources from the different host species than on host size.

To determine the immature mortality, the development time and the sex ratio, 12 mated females of A. Colemani (24h old), and 240 nymphs of A. gossypii (3 days old) were used. To evaluate fertility 15 mated females (24h old) were used. For each parasitoid female, 300 nymphs were offered in the 1st day, 250 nymphs in the 2nd day, 200 nymphs in the 3rd day, 150 nymphs in the 4th day, 100 nymphs in the 5th day and 50 nymphs in the other days. Immature mortality of A. Colemani was 22.1%, development time of males and females were 12.0 and 11.8 days, respectively, and sex ratio was 0.6. The females of A. Colemani laid 420 eggs and had longevity of 5.9 days. The net reproduction rate (Ro) was 194.81 females and the intrinsic rate of increase (rm) was 0.384 females/females/day. The finite rate of increase (l) was 1.48 females/day, the mean length of a generation (T) was 13.74 days and the time to duplication the population (TD) was 12.60 days. The parasitoid A. Colemani had a great potential of population growth on A. gossypii as a host and could be an effective biological control agent of this aphid.

    Aphidius Colemani Viereck is among the main natural enemies used for biological control of Aphis gossypii Glover. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the development of A. Colemani and the alterations caused by the parasitism in the host A. gossypii in different temperatures and to estimate the thermal requirements of the parasitoid. The experiments were carried out in controlled environmental chambers at 16, 19, 22, 25, 28 and 31 ± 1oC, 70 ± 10% RH, and 12h photophase. Second-instar nymphs of A. gossypii were parasitized once and kept individually in glass tubes (2.5 cm x 8.5 cm), containing leaf disc of cucumber (2 cm) and 1% water/agar solution. The development time of A. Colemani, from oviposition to mummies (11.9, 9.8, 7.7, 6.4 and 6.4 days) and from oviposition to adult (19.4, 16.2, 12.6, 10.5 and 10.7 days) decreased with the increase of the temperature from 16oC to 25oC. The rates of mummies and the emergence of the parasitoid, and its longevity also decreased with the increase of the temperature. Mummies were not produced at 31oC. The lower temperature threshold of A. Colemani was 5.94oC and its thermal constant was 200 degrees-day. The alterations caused by the parasitoid in the A. gossypii host were minimized at 31oC, where 98% of the host did not show symptoms of parasitism and produced nymphs. The temperature of 22oC was optimal for the development time of A. Colemani.

    Os parasitoides Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson) e Aphidius Colemani Viereck desempenham importante papel na regulacao das populacoes de afideos que atacam crisântemo em ambientes protegidos. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a interacao controle biologico e resistencia de plantas, por meio do desenvolvimento e parasitismo de L. testaceipes e A. Colemani no pulgao Aphis gossypii Glover mantido nas cultivares comerciais de crisântemo suscetivel Yellow Snowdon (YS) e resistente White Reagan (WR). O experimento foi conduzido em câmara climatica a temperatura de 22 ± 1°C, UR de 70 ± 10% e fotofase de 12h, utilizando ninfas de 2o e 3o instares de A. gossypii atacadas apenas uma vez pelos parasitoides. O desenvolvimento foi de 15,0 e 12,9 dias, para L. testaceipes e de 17,0 e 16,3 dias para A. Colemani em A. gossypii nas cvs. YS e WR, respectivamente. O parasitismo por L. testaceipes foi maior em A. gossypii na cv. YS (68,4%), quando comparado com WR (50,0%), sendo que para A. Colemani nao houve diferenca significativa (46,8 e 35,0% para YS e WR, respectivamente). As porcentagens de emergencia de L. testaceipes e A. Colemani em A. gossypii mantido em YS e WR foram, respectivamente 91,6% e 85,3% e 78,1% e 100,0%. A longevidade de A. Colemani e a taxa de parasitismo de L. testaceipes foram influenciadas negativamente pela cultivar WR. Os resultados indicam uma interacao positiva entre controle biologico com parasitoides e a cultivar resistente WR no controle de A. gossypii em crisântemo em sistema protegido.

    The parasitoid Aphidius Colemani Viereck, 1912 presents higher mortality at constant temperatures above 25°C, and probably it is the cause of the failure on the biological control of Aphis gossypii Glover, 1877 when this parasitoid is used at higher temperatures in greenhouses. The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of different temperatures on individuals of A. Colemani from different climatic regions of Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Individuals of A. Colemani were collected in the localities of Juramento, Lavras and Sao Gotardo, and reared in laboratory (22±2°C, 70±10% RH and 12h photophase) for three generations in the host A. gossypii, on cucumber plants. One mated female of A. Colemani, 24-48 h old, was released for one hour, in a Petri dish (15cm) with 20 nymphs of 2nd instar of A. gossypii on a leaf disk of cucumber (4 cm of diameter) laid on a layer of agar-water (1%). The parasitized aphids were kept at 16, 19, 22, 25 and 28±1°C, 70±10% RH and 12h photophase. The emergence rates of individuals from Juramento (65.9 and 35.4%) and Sao Gotardo (71.4 and 47.6%) were lower compared to those from Lavras (87.1 and 80.9%) at 16 and 28°C. The more suitable temperature for the development of A. Colemani from Lavras was higher than those for individuals from Juramento and Sao Gotardo. The individuals from Lavras showed highest emergence at 28°C, and this demonstrated the existence of individuals of A. Colemani with tolerance to higher temperatures. These results open news perspectives on the use of different strains of A. Colemani on biological control of A. gossypii in protected cultivation.

    The performance of two aphid parasitoids, Aphidius Colemani Viereck and Aphidius matricariae (Haliday), against Aphis gossypii Glover on greenhouse cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) and Myzus persicae (Sulzer) on sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) were evaluated at various constant temperatures. Biological parameters of both parasitoids including developmental time, pupal survivorship, percentage of parasitism, and sex ratio of the progeny were studied at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35C. At 25C, an average of 10.0 1.1 and 9.8 1.1 d was needed for A. Colemani to complete its development from oviposition to adult eclosion on A. gossypii and M. persicae, respectively.     The performance of two aphid parasitoids, Aphidius Colemani Viereck and Aphidius matricariae (Haliday), against Aphis gossypii Glover on greenhouse cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) and Myzus persicae (Sulzer) on sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) were evaluated at various constant temperatures. Biological parameters of both parasitoids including developmental time, pupal survivorship, percentage of parasitism, and sex ratio of the progeny were studied at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 degrees C.     The functional response of two aphid parasitoids, Aphidius Colemani Viereck and Aphidius matricariae (Haliday) (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae), on the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover (Homoptera: Aphididae), was examined. Five constant temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, and 30°C) and six host densities (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64) were used during a 24-h period. At each temperature, 2–64 third-instar nymphs of A. gossypii were exposed to individual wasp mating pairs. A type II functional response model for both parasitoid wasps was fit separately for each temperature. The results showed that instantaneous attack rate ( a ) in A. Colemani increased linearly as the temperature increases from 10 to 30°C, but in A. matricariae , ( a ) increased almost linearly with temperature to reach a maximum at 25°C, and then decreased at 30°C, displaying an asymmetrical dome-shaped pattern. The highest instantaneous attack rate for A. Colemani and A. matricariae were calculated 0.940 ± 0.144 day^−1 at 30°C and 0.687 ± 0.157 day^−1 at 25°C, respectively. Handling time ( T _h) for A. Colemani was inversely proportional to temperature and ranged from 0.093 ± 0.026 day at 10°C to 0.032 ± 0.004 day at 30°C, but in A. matricariae , ( T _h) was between 0.078 ± 0.015 day at 10°C and 0.036 ± 0.014 day at 20°C. A. Colemani achieved higher parasitism rate than A. matricariae at higher temperatures. This observation suggests that A. Colemani maybe more effective for biological control of the cotton aphid during warmer periods.

    Os parasitoides Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson) e Aphidius Colemani Viereck desempenham importante papel na regulacao das populacoes de afideos que atacam crisântemo em ambientes protegidos. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a interacao controle biologico e resistencia de plantas, por meio do desenvolvimento e parasitismo de L. testaceipes e A. Colemani no pulgao Aphis gossypii Glover mantido nas cultivares comerciais de crisântemo suscetivel Yellow Snowdon (YS) e resistente White Reagan (WR). O experimento foi conduzido em câmara climatica a temperatura de 22 ± 1°C, UR de 70 ± 10% e fotofase de 12h, utilizando ninfas de 2o e 3o instares de A. gossypii atacadas apenas uma vez pelos parasitoides. O desenvolvimento foi de 15,0 e 12,9 dias, para L. testaceipes e de 17,0 e 16,3 dias para A. Colemani em A. gossypii nas cvs. YS e WR, respectivamente. O parasitismo por L. testaceipes foi maior em A. gossypii na cv. YS (68,4%), quando comparado com WR (50,0%), sendo que para A. Colemani nao houve diferenca significativa (46,8 e 35,0% para YS e WR, respectivamente). As porcentagens de emergencia de L. testaceipes e A. Colemani em A. gossypii mantido em YS e WR foram, respectivamente 91,6% e 85,3% e 78,1% e 100,0%. A longevidade de A. Colemani e a taxa de parasitismo de L. testaceipes foram influenciadas negativamente pela cultivar WR. Os resultados indicam uma interacao positiva entre controle biologico com parasitoides e a cultivar resistente WR no controle de A. gossypii em crisântemo em sistema protegido.

    The parasitoid Aphidius Colemani Viereck, 1912 presents higher mortality at constant temperatures above 25°C, and probably it is the cause of the failure on the biological control of Aphis gossypii Glover, 1877 when this parasitoid is used at higher temperatures in greenhouses. The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of different temperatures on individuals of A. Colemani from different climatic regions of Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Individuals of A. Colemani were collected in the localities of Juramento, Lavras and Sao Gotardo, and reared in laboratory (22±2°C, 70±10% RH and 12h photophase) for three generations in the host A. gossypii, on cucumber plants. One mated female of A. Colemani, 24-48 h old, was released for one hour, in a Petri dish (15cm) with 20 nymphs of 2nd instar of A. gossypii on a leaf disk of cucumber (4 cm of diameter) laid on a layer of agar-water (1%). The parasitized aphids were kept at 16, 19, 22, 25 and 28±1°C, 70±10% RH and 12h photophase. The emergence rates of individuals from Juramento (65.9 and 35.4%) and Sao Gotardo (71.4 and 47.6%) were lower compared to those from Lavras (87.1 and 80.9%) at 16 and 28°C. The more suitable temperature for the development of A. Colemani from Lavras was higher than those for individuals from Juramento and Sao Gotardo. The individuals from Lavras showed highest emergence at 28°C, and this demonstrated the existence of individuals of A. Colemani with tolerance to higher temperatures. These results open news perspectives on the use of different strains of A. Colemani on biological control of A. gossypii in protected cultivation.

    O parasitoide Aphidius Colemani Viereck, 1912 apresenta alta mortalidade em temperaturas constantes superiores a 25°C. Provavelmente esta e a causa do insucesso no controle biologico de Aphis gossypii Glover, 1877 com o uso de A. Colemani em temperaturas elevadas em casas de vegetacao. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a resposta a diferentes temperaturas de individuos de A. Colemani, originarios de diferentes regioes climaticas do estado de Minas Gerais. Individuos de A. Colemani foram coletados nos municipios de Juramento, Lavras e Sao Gotardo, e criados em laboratorio por tres geracoes em A. gossypii em plantas de pepino, em sala climatizada (22±2°C, 70±10 UR e 12h de fotofase). Uma femea de A. Colemani, acasalada e com 24-48h de vida, foi liberada por um periodo de uma hora em uma placa de Petri (15 cm) contendo 20 ninfas de 2° instar de A. gossypii em um disco foliar de pepino (4 cm de diâmetro) sobre uma solucao agar/agua a 1%. Os pulgoes parasitados foram mantidos em câmaras climaticas nas temperaturas de 16, 19, 22, 25 e 28±1oC, com UR de 70±10% e fotofase de 12h. Nas temperaturas de 16 e 28°C, a emergencia dos parasitoides originarios de Juramento (65,9 e 35,4%) e Sao Gotardo (71,4 e 47,6%) foi significativamente inferior aquelas encontradas para os de Lavras (87,1 e 80,9%). A temperatura mais adequada para o desenvolvimento de individuos de A. Colemani oriundos de Lavras foi mais alta do que para aqueles oriundos de Juramento e Sao Gotardo. Individuos de Lavras apresentaram alta emergencia a 28°C, demonstrando a existencia de individuos de A. Colemani com tolerância a temperaturas mais altas. Esses resultados abrem novas perspectivas quanto a possibilidades de utilizacao de diferentes biotipos de A. Colemani no controle biologico de A. gossypii em cultivos protegidos.
