    Abstract:

    So far, a vast amount of studies on sustainability in supply chain management have been conducted by academics over the last decade. Nevertheless, socially related aspects are still neglected in the related discussion. The primary motivation of the present literature review has arisen from this shortcoming, thus the key purpose of this study is to enrich the discussion by providing a state-of-the-art, focusing exclusively on social issues in sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) by considering the textile/Apparel Sector as the field of application. The authors conduct a literature review, including content analysis which covers 45 articles published in English peer-reviewed journals, and proposes a comprehensive map which integrates the latest findings on socially related practices in the textile/Apparel industry with the dominant conceptualization in order to reveal potential research areas in the field. The results show an ongoing lack of investigation regarding the social dimension of the triple bottom line in SSCM. Findings indicate that a company’s internal orientation is the main assisting factor in sustainable supply chain management practices. Further, supplier collaboration and assessment can be interpreted as an offer for suppliers deriving from stakeholders and a focal company’s management of social risk. Nevertheless, suppliers do also face or even create huge barriers in improving their social performance. This calls for more empirical research and qualitative or quantitative survey methods, especially at the supplier level located in developing countries.

    Abstract:

    Abstract The Apparel industry is responsible for 10% of the world's carbon emissions, and is considered as the second highest industrial polluter after the oil industry. In Sri Lanka, the Apparel Sector is the key foreign revenue earner, and developing a sustainable Apparel industry will provide a competitive and strategic advantage to the Sri Lankan Apparel products in the global market. However, limited data availability and a lack of studies carried out to quantify environmental impacts and propose mitigation strategies have detrimentally affected the growth of the Sri Lankan Apparel industry. This study proposes a framework to quantify the environmental impacts due to energy use in garment production in the Sri Lankan Apparel industry. Initially, the impacts were quantified using life cycle assessment with a gate-to-gate approach, based on the specific energy use and energy sources being used in the major production and transportation phases in a garment's life cycle. A case study was then conducted based on the data from an Apparel production facility located in Sri Lanka. The life cycle impacts of energy use of the selected process phases were compared to identify the most critical processes in terms of the environmental footprint. Finally, the study was extended to investigate the effects of using different alternative energy supply scenarios. The life cycle impact assessment was conducted using the ReCiPe (Ver 1.11) Midpoint method in SimaPro. The findings revealed that the garment production phase carries the highest life cycle impacts among the studied process phases from fabric manufacture to distribution to the end market. Scenario analysis showed that the use of solar photovoltaics and biomass to supply the required electricity and thermal energy for Apparel manufacturing can reduce climate change, ozone depletion, and terrestrial acidification by 90–95%. This information can be used by decision makers to plan for sustainability and growth of the Apparel industry.

    Abstract:

    This paper analyses the adjustment process within the Swedish textile and wearing Apparel Sector and finds results that support the notion of Schumpeter’s ‘creative’ destruction. The turnover of plants and jobs seems to ‘improve’ the industries from within due to an exit (entry) of less (more) productive plants, exit (entry) of old (new) incumbents, a destruction (creation) of less (more) human-capital intensive jobs, and a supply of new products on the world market. The econometric analysis of the probability of exit with plant, firm and industry characteristics supports the idea of a rationalisation from within.
