    Quality is about meeting the stakeholder‘s expectations: the subjective perception is often more important than hard facts. Therefore, a common understanding between all involved parties – especially business owners as well as service providers – concerning the quality of a service is mandatory. Application Management is defined as the concept and all required techniques to monitor, measure and record data for operating services. It has a significant impact on the quality of an IT service. Based on the so-called value chain – a phased approach starting with a business point of view followed by IT development and operation – necessary activities as well as quality indicators are identified and described for each step in the software development livecycle. The aspects of Application Management are illustrated by using a real world example of implementing an output Management system within a bank.

    Modern enterprise Applications integrate various heterogeneous components, which Management has to be suitably coordinated. Being able to check whether the Management allowed by the implementation of an Application component conforms to a given specification hence becomes crucial. One may indeed wish to replace component specifications with conforming implementations, by ensuring that already planned Management can be enacted, or that no additional (potentially undesired) Management activities get enabled. In this perspective, we propose a parametric relation for testing the conformance of the Management of Application components, based on an existing formalism to model multi-component Application Management (i.e., Management protocols). We also discuss how such relation can be exploited to ensure that replacing a specification with a conforming implementation continues to enable all already allowed Management activities, and/or that no additional (potentially undesired) Management activity gets enabled.

    Abstract Achieving a correct and effective Management of Fog computing Applications is a non-trivial task to accomplish, which includes considering specific Application requirements as well as dynamic infrastructure characteristics. CISCO FogDirector is a tool that can be used to manage the entire life-cycle of IoT Applications over Fog infrastructures by relying on a RESTful API. In this paper, we present a prototype simulation environment, FogDirSim , compliant with FogDirector API. FogDirSim permits comparing different Application Management policies according to a set of well-defined performance indicators (viz., uptime, energy consumption, resource usage, type of alerts) and by considering probabilistic variations of the Applications workload and failures of the underlying infrastructure. A lifelike example is used to validate the prototype and to show its usefulness in selecting the best Management policy.

    CISCO FogDirector is one of the first available tools supporting the Management of the entire life cycle of Applications deployed to Fog infrastructures. In this paper, we present a simple operational semantics of the main features of FogDirector, which provides a compact reference for the tool. We then introduce a prototype, based on such semantics, that can constitute the core of a simulation environment of FogDirector Application Management. The usefulness of the prototype is illustrated over a motivating example.

    Managing large, highly distributed IoT Applications over heterogeneous Fog infrastructures so to meet all their stringent QoS (as well as hardware and software) requirements is intrinsically difficult. Different simulation and predictive methodologies have been proposed to estimate key performance indicators of eligible Application deployments and Managements so to identify the best candidates. In this paper, we describe the current business model environment and discuss two possible business models for creating value from a company provisioning predictive Fog Application Management services.

TOSCA permits to define an Application as an orchestration of components, whose types can specify states, requirements, capabilities and Management operations — but not how they interact with each other.

    Deploying, running, and maintaining Applications running on a distributed set of resources is a challenging ta sk. Software developers often spend a significant amount of time dealing with the complexities associated with software configuration and Management in these environments. Distributed Application Management systems are designed to automate the process, and to ultimately help developers cope with the common problems that arise during the design, implementation, and evaluation of distributed systems. In this talk, we highlight the key features of Plush, an Application Management system for PlanetLab and ModelNet, and describe how Plush simplifies peer-to-peer system visualization and evaluation.

    This paper explores the challenges associated with distributed Application Management in large-scale computing environments. In particular, we investigate several techniques for extending Plush, an existing distributed Application Management framework, to provide improved scalability and fault tolerance without sacrificing performance. One of the main limitations of Plush is the structure of the underlying communication fabric. We explain how we incorporated the use of an overlay tree provided by Mace, a toolkit that simplifies the implementation of overlay networks, in place of the existing communication subsystem in Plush to improve robustness and scalability.

    Support for distributed Application Management in large-scale networked environments remains in its early stages. Although a number of solutions exist for subtasks of Application deployment, monitoring, maintenance, and visualization in distributed environments, few tools provide a unified framework for Application Management. Many of the existing tools address the Management needs of a single type of Application or service that runs in a specific environment, and these tools are not adaptable enough to be used for other Applications or platforms. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of Plush, a fully configurable Application Management infrastructure designed to meet the general requirements of several different classes of distributed Applications and execution environments. Plush allows developers to specifically define the flow of control needed by their computations using Application building blocks. Through an extensible resource Management interface, Plush supports execution in a variety of environments, including both live deployment platforms and emulated clusters. To gain an understanding of how Plush manages different classes of distributed Applications, we take a closer look at specific Applications and evaluate how Plush provides support for each.

    Industrial companies using software as a key technology have noticed the importance of software process development. We use the term "Application Management" to denote the software process activities related to software maintenance and evolution. We outline experience in the development of an Application Management process and in using a process modeling tool in an organization developing embedded systems Applications. This paper shows the phases of improvement procedures and compares process modeling with a more comprehensive improvement framework called PR/sup 2/IMER. We use an embedded system of the aerospace domain as a case study. We model the software maintenance and evolution process of a small company which is acting as a subcontractor in large aerospace projects. A software process modeling tool called ProcessWEAVER is used to model the maintenance and evolution process.
