Assessment of the economic performance of the seabream and seabass Aquaculture Industry in the European Union

During the last 10 years, the Industry has experienced a process of Industry concentration with the aim to overcome efficiency and profitability issues. However, the economic performance of the companies is still in general rather poor. The present work analyzes the economic performance of EU seabream and seabass companies in the period 2008–2016. The work is the first study to analyze companies' profitability in the EU as a whole, by country and company size, using economic and financial data extracted from companies’ annual accounts. Based on the results, the study discusses the improvement of production and business profitability in recent years and the different factors that may have caused it, as well as the challenges and threats that seabream and seabass companies will have to face in order to achieve economic sustainability.

Even though most celebrated clusters seem to be in high-cost areas, many econometric studies represent agglomeration externalities as increased primal productivity or reduced cost. While this certainly can be consistent with some observed agglomeration effects, it may be insufficient for the growth of a cluster. The key condition for this is that profitability is higher. The paper tests for agglomeration effects using a profit function approach. This may be particularly important for firms in high-cost clusters, where revenue effects can be as important as productivity and cost effects. The paper tests for both intra- and inter-Industry agglomeration externalities using firm-level data.

During this period, the production has on average been growing with 8% per year. At the same time, the price of salmon has stabilized indicating that an increase in demand is driving the production growth rather than increasing productivity in the sector. A Malmquist index approach is used to calculate total factor productivity change applying data envelopment analysis to construct the underlying production frontier. Furthermore, the bootstrap approach has been applied to construct confidence intervals for the Malmquist change indices. The results show a total factor productivity change of 1–2% a year, where the contribution from technical efficiency change is between 0.2 and 1.2% and technological change is between 0.6 and 0.8%. The results show that productivity growth has slowed down over the years indicating that demand growth is the main driver of production growth. Furthermore, as productivity growth is slowing down production growth can only happen when the production area is increased. The scarcity of suitable production sites can potentially be the most limiting factor to future production growth in the salmon Aquaculture Industry.

In this article, we investigate the use of fixed price contracts for Norwegian salmon exports to France based on all export transactions between the two countries. Our analysis shows that almost 25% of these exports were traded using fixed price contracts and contract prices were renegotiated at different intervals, including as infrequently as once a year. Some contracts allow the contracting parties to adjust contract prices when the export price moves significantly. Benchmark analysis, which shows a marginal 0.5% difference between average unit revenue for the year from spot sales relative to contract sales, indicates that contracts primarily change revenue time profiles. The use of contracts creates a wedge between salmon export prices and spot prices in periods of price volatility, which in turn reduces price transmission. JEL Classification Code: L14, Q22

A system dynamics analysis of boom and bust in the shrimp Aquaculture Industry
System Dynamics Review, 2005Co-Authors: Steve Arquitt, Xu Honggang, Ron JohnstoneAbstract:Driven by growing international demand for shrimp and stagnating catches of wild shrimp, the shrimp Aquaculture Industry has grown remarkably over the past two decades. Initial hopes that farmed shrimp could provide an environmentally benign alternative to over-exploited wild stocks have, however, proven disappointing. Although global growth has been steady, the Industry has experienced dramatic production crashes at national and sub-national scales associated with severe environmental damage. From a systems perspective, the Industry is prone to exceed and consume its environmental carrying capacity, resulting in boom and bust patterns of development. In this paper we describe a dynamic commodity system model built to examine boom and bust in the shrimp Aquaculture Industry. Experiments with the model suggest that a policy that taxes the Industry and rebates proceeds to licensed producers may help shift the system toward sustainability. Innovation cycles, niches and sustainability in the shrimp Aquaculture Industry in Thailand

Gheewala, Phimphakan LebelAbstract:In this paper we explain how a shift from culture of the black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) to the Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) took place during 2002–6 in Thailand. We use system innovation theory to help explain how niche substitution led to a regime change within a Thai Aquaculture Industry trying to maintain international competitiveness but under pressures from a global landscape in which consumers are increasingly concerned with health and ecological sustainability. Support from a vertically integrated major firm, an extensive foundation of learning networks within the Industry, and early profitability made the scaling-up and embedding of the experiment with white shrimp very rapid once the formal ban on import of exotic broodstock was lifted. Disease management with domesticated, specific pathogen-free strains of white shrimp has proven much easier than with black shrimp still dependent on capture of wild broodstock. Moreover relative production costs are lower. The switch in species had significant consequences for the environment and firms. Using life cycle analysis we found that rearing white shrimp requires less resource and produces less waste than black shrimp. The shift in regime, however, also made it more difficult for small farms and hatchery businesses.
