  • thermodynamic oxidation and reduction potentials of photocatalytic semiconductors in Aqueous Solution
    Chemistry of Materials, 2012
    Co-Authors: Shiyou Chen, Lin-wang Wang
    Abstract:

An approach is introduced to calculate the thermodynamic oxidation and reduction potentials of semiconductors in Aqueous Solution. By combining a newly developed ab initio calculation method for compound formation energy and band alignment with electrochemistry experimental data, this approach can be used to predict the stability of almost any compound semiconductor in Aqueous Solution. Thirty photocatalytic semiconductors have been studied, and a graph (a simplified Pourbaix diagram) showing their valence/conduction band edges and oxidation/reduction potentials relative to the water redox potentials is produced. On the basis of this graph, the thermodynamic stabilities and trends against the oxidative and reductive photocorrosion for compound semiconductors are analyzed, which shows the following: (i) some metal oxides can be resistant against the oxidation by the photogenerated holes when used as the n-type photoanodes; (ii) all the nonoxide semiconductors are susceptible to oxidation, but they are resi...

    Abstract:

We introduce an approach to calculate the thermodynamic oxidation and reduction potentials of semiconductors in Aqueous Solution. By combining a newly-developed ab initio calculation for compound formation energy and band alignment with electrochemistry experimental data, this approach can be used to predict the stability of almost any compound semiconductor in Aqueous Solution. 30 photocatalytic semiconductors have been studied, and a graph (a simplified Pourbaix diagram) showing their valence/conduction band levels and oxidation/reduction potentials is produced. Based on this graph, we have studied the stabilities and trends against the oxidative and reductive photocorrosion for compound semiconductors. We found that, only metal oxides can be thermodynamically stable when used as the n-type photoanodes. All the non-oxides are unstable due to easy oxidation by the photogenerated holes, but they can be resistant to the reduction by electrons, thus stable as the p-type photocathodes.

  • structural aspect of gelation in schizophyllan sorbitol Aqueous Solution
    Polymer Journal, 1999
Co-Authors: Hitoshi Maeda, Tania Fuchs, Walter Richtering, Kanji Kajiwara, Shinichi Kitamura, Yoshiaki Yuguchi, Hiroshi Urakawa, Walther Burchard
    Abstract:

Although schizophyllan undergoes no gelation by itself in its Aqueous Solution, the addition of sorbitol results in the formation of transparent gel at lower temperatures. The mechanism of the gel formation was discussed from the structural analysis of schizophyllan in the Aqueous Solution with and without sorbitol, based on the results of small-angle X-ray scattering. Here sorbitol was found to disentangle a part of triple-stranded helices and bridge the disentangled parts which serve as a crosslinking domain.

  • Solubility of Cellulose in NaOH/Urea Aqueous Solution
    Polymer Journal, 2000
    Co-Authors: Jinping Zhou, Lina Zhang
    Abstract:

NaOH/urea Aqueous Solution as solvent of cellulose including cotton linter, bagasse, alkali-soluble cellulose and Bemliese® was studied by solubility analysis, viscometry and light scattering. The addition of 2—4 wt% urea significantly improved the solubility of cellulose in 6—8 wt% NaOH Aqueous Solutions, and moderate urea plays a role in improving solubility and avoiding the formation of cellulose gel. Celluloses I with viscosity-average molecular weight (Mη) of 6.7×104 were completely dissolved in 6 wt% NaOH/4 wt% urea Aqueous Solution. Cellulose dissolved in 6 wt% NaOH/4 wt% urea Aqueous Solution degraded slowly with storage time, and Mη of cellulose in the Solution decreased 20% after storage for 100 days. The stability of cellulose Solution was higher than cellulose cuoxam. A regenerated cellulose membrane having the tensile strength of 88.7MPa and breaking elongation of 11% was successfully prepared by coagulating 4 wt% Bemliese® Solution in 6 wt% NaOH/4 wt% urea with 5 wt% CaCl2 then 1.3 wt% HCl Aqueous Solution as coagulate at 20°C.
