Several studies have investigated their influence on several tasks. Results were different among studies. In this paper, we conducted a complete experiment investigating the influence of the stereo and head tracking in the specific context of virtual visits of houses during Architectural Project review with clients. We manipulated the stereo and head tracking in four conditions and we examined effects of the two factors on distance perception (room dimensions, habitability, etc.), task difficulty, presence and simulator sickness. Results reveal a significant effect of the stereo on the estimation of the habitability, the dimensions of the rooms and task difficulty. However, the effect of stereo and head tracking was not significant on the presence and simulator sickness.

This near surrounding ground is missing when using wall screens. To address this problem we suggest increasing the Vertical Field of View (VFoV). One solution is the use of the rendering approach such as non-planar Projection. However, simply increasing the FoV of the rendering leads to much distortion in the VE which is not suitable for Architectural Project review. We propose a new hybrid Projection combining a perspective Projection in the center of the screen and a cylindrical-like Projection on the top and bottom boarders. By this, we increase VFoV without incurring large deformations to preserve the perception of distances and to allow seeing the surrounding ground. We also report the results of an experiment we conducted to evaluate distance perception with our Projection.

We have conducted an experiment in furnished and unfurnished houses to evaluate the perception of distances and the spatial comprehension. Results show that the hybrid Projection improves the perception of surrounding ground which leads to an improvement in the spatial comprehension. Moreover, it preserves the perception of distances and sizes by providing a performance similar to the perspective one in the task of distance estimation.

The goal of this study is to identify the most important factors that influence decision making and accuracy of distance perception in the context of Architectural Project reviews. Technical factors such as field of view, display devices and motion parallax were widely studied. In this paper, we have investigated other individual and contextual factors. We conducted a between-subject experiment using an immersive large screen display to examine the influence of the three factors: 1) the cognitive profile of the user (visual, auditory and kinesthetic - VAK), 2) the furnishing of the house, and 3) the locomotion speed, on distance perception. Results reveal that participants with visual profile were more accurate in distance estimation. Further, furnished houses were more suitable for virtual visits. The locomotion speed also seems to influence virtual visits which were better with a slow locomotion speed. Based on the results of our study, we finally present guidelines for setting up Architectural Project review tools which employ similar setup.

Computer Science and Information Technology, 2017Co-Authors: Joana Tching, Joaquim Reis, Alexandra PaioAbstract:Shape grammars (SG), which define a set of shapes, are used in applications in the field of Computational Creativity (CC). Computational Creativity can be considered an area of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that chases the goal of understanding creativity and building computational applications that emulate or support human creativity in Arts and Science. In this context, our aim is to show how SG may provide artists with applications to assist them in the creative process, not only creating solutions but also as a way of creating new ideas. Our objective is to demonstrate how, in architecture, SG can work with rules that will convey legal restrictions, space needs and goals of the architect, creating possible solutions to a Project. A wide range of solutions can be tested in computational applications based in SG. These applications can also encourage the architect to go further in his creativity through shape emergence where the conditions are fulfilled and presented as innovative and/or unexpected. Architects obey strict rules when they apply artistic intention to a specific need/objective intention (space building). Thus, our methods are to enumerate SG as a tool for decision-making in Architectural Projects and to show a set of common phases that may be generated by the use of computational applications in response not only to technical needs but also to creative goals.

Due to the strict rules they have to obey and to the issues they are supposed to respond and, not being a mere artistic intention but rather a response to a specific need/objective intention (space building), Architectural Projects show a set of common phases which might take a lot of advantages from computational applications and at the same time respond not only to the technical needs but also to the creative goals.
