The study concluded that there was a need to establish a religious archives group in order for the voice of ecclesiastical archives to resonate across South Africa. Through this group, it is hoped that there will be greater coordination and networking amongst the Archival repositories. The help of associations such as the South African Society of Archivists, the Oral History Association of South Africa and the South African Preservation Group could greatly assist in fostering best practices in Archival Management. To champion this worthwhile cause, it would be ideal to come up with an Open Day on religious archives to serve as an advocacy platform. These recommendations are made against a backdrop of the poor state of religious archives in Pietermaritzburg, resulting from acute underfunding and which threatens the survival of this record in the long term.

So much to learn, so little time to learn it: North American Archival education programs in the information age and the role for certificate programs

TibboAbstract:Archivists in North America have described, discussed, and debated the necessary and optimal content, configuration, and venue for Archival education for close to a century but have given little consideration to integrating technology within Archival curricula. Increasingly, archivists are faced with a high tech world in which they must understand issues including information systems, the nature of electronic records and databases, record migration, digitization, and web design and creation for provision of access. This paper explores the nature and extent of information technology and information science coursework and knowledge discussed in the Society of American Archivists’ Guidelines for a Graduate Program in Archival Studies and that students have available to them while in Archival programs. It concludes with a proposal for Library and Information Science education programs that prepare archivists to explore developing Certificate of Advanced Studies programs in Archival Management on top of master’s degrees to allow for additional information science coursework.

American Archivist, 2009Co-Authors: David BearmanAbstract:This article reviews the arguments presented by both sides in the lawsuit Armstrong v. the Executive Office of the President, which concerned the electronic mail created by the Reagan and Bush White House on the IBM PROFS system. It examines the emerging consensus among archivists worldwide on approaches to managing electronic records and considers the ways in which the position taken by the government failed to reflect best practices. Specifically, it examines recent discussions of functional requirements for recordkeeping systems and raises some implications of a functional perspective for Archival programs and strategies. It concludes by arguing that archivists will need to play a more active role in the society at large in order to ensure that the broader culture understands and acts on the threats to accountability presented by computer-based electronic communications.

There are still many organizations that are not yet good at managing records, which hinders decision making because the required records have not yet been found. In order for records to help smooth the organization's activities, a good records Management system is needed. archive is needed in the implementation of office work because the archive is a central memory for each activity in a government institution in the context of carrying out activities such as planning, analyzing, decision making, and providing public services. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, describing Archival governance in integrated district administration services as an effort to improve public services and problems encountered. As for the data collection done is documentation, interviews, and field observations as well as collecting primary and secondary data that supports and the concept used is the concept of Archival governance, public services, and integrated administrative services district. The results of the research show that the Management of archives in the district of Malang city of General Affairs has tried to provide good records Management but not in accordance with the standards of archives. Factors that hamper Archival Management are lack of facilities and infrastructure such as large closets and special storage space. Besides the ability of employees and the absence of special staff archives are also factors that inhibit the arrangement of the archive
