    Abstract The purpose of this study was to determine the ability of individuals with a cervical spinal cord injury to achieve and sustain a cardiorespiratory training intensity during wheelchair rugby. Nine wheelchair rugby players completed a continuous peak exercise test on a SciFit Pro I Arm Ergometer with stage increases each minute to determine peak heart rate and power output. Approximately one week after peak exercise testing, heart rate was recorded (every 5 s) during three regularly scheduled rugby training sessions. Data were analysed to determine the number of continuous minutes that participants spent above 70% of heart rate reserve under various rugby training activities. The percent of time spent at or above 70% heart rate reserve varied across participants and conditions. Res. 20(3):665-671. 2006.-The purpose of this study was to determine heart rate (HR, b·min?1) response during competitive match play of 6 men who were skilled wheelchair (WC) tennis players. Each participant completed an Arm crank Ergometer test that measured HR via a telemetry device and O2 via open circuit spirometry from rest until fatigue ( O2peak). Each athlete participated in 2 competitive singles matches during which HRs were recorded in 5-second intervals and O2 was estimated using the corresponding HR values recorded during the Arm Ergometer tests. Data analysis revealed an average playing intensity of 69.4 ± 8.9% of HRpeak and 49.9 ± 14.5% of O2peak. In conclusion, it is recommended that skilled adult WC tennis players perform off-court aerobic conditioning as part of their training program, because the intensity of a competitive WC tennis match is sufficiently high enough to stress the cardiovascular system.

    Introduction We investigated and compared the effects of 2 different types of upper extremity exercise training on upper extremity function, strength, endurance, and ambulation in patients with early-stage Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Methods The study group (n = 12) exercised with an Arm Ergometer under the supervision of a physiotherapist, whereas the control group (n = 12) underwent a strengthening range-of-motion (ROM) exercise program under the supervision of their families at home for 8 weeks. Upper extremity functional performance, strength, endurance, and ambulatory status were assessed before and after the training.     Purpose: To examine the effect of a progressive upper-body exercise program on lymphedema secondary to breast cancer treatment. Methods: Fourteen breast cancer survivors with unilateral upper extremity lymphedema were randomly assigned to an exercise (n = 7) or control group (n = 7). The exercise group followed a progressive, 8-week upper-body exercise program consisting of resistance training plus aerobic exercise using a Monark Rehab Trainer Arm Ergometer. Lymphedema was assessed by Arm circumference and measurement of Arm volume by water displacement. Patients were evaluated on five occasions over the experimental period. The Medical Outcomes Trust Short-Form 36 Survey was used to measure quality of life before and after the intervention. Significance was set at alpha ≤ 0.01. Results: No changes were found in Arm circumference or Arm volume as a result of the exercise program.     Nordic skiers place great emphasis on upper body endurance. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare oxygen uptake (VO2), minute ventilation (VE), tidal volume (VT), breath frequency (fB), heart rate (HR), and ventilatory anaerobic threshold (Tvan) responses to upper body classical poling (CP) and double poling (DP). Sixteen male master class cross-country ski racers performed DP and CP at similar incremental power outputs at 45 strokes/min on a modified Biokinetic swim bench variable-resistance Arm Ergometer. Leg VO2peak was measured during a Monark bicycle Ergometer graded exercise test. Mean CP VO2peak was 34.8 +/- 9.0 ml kg-1 min-1 compared to 40.3 +/- 10.5 ml.kg-1 for DP (p 0.05) different. At submaximal exercise values for VO2, and HR were significantly different between the Arm exercise modes. It is concluded that the mechanisms responsible for these observations may be increased active upper body muscle mass involvement for DP and that Tvan adaptations occur specifically to the exercise mode and recruited muscle groups.

    For individuals with lower extremity injury or disability, upper body exercise provides a mechanism of functional mobility training, car-diovascular fitness, as well as a means for clinical fitness assessment. However, the validity of fitness assessment relies on the efficacy of di-agnostic tools and measures in order to provide meaningful data to clinicians. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if the SciFitTMPro II Arm Ergometer, a widely available upper body Ergometer (UBE), is a reliable device for the determination of VO2Peak in fit able-bodied swimmers. Eight trained male swimmers (28 ± 9 yrs) performed two incremental protocols VO2Peak consisting of a 4-min wArm-up at 15 W followed by 2 min at 50 W and progressing 10 W every 2 min until volitional exhaustion. There was a linear relationship between workload and VO2 in all trials (R = 0.96; p ≤ 0.01) while Cronbach’s alpha for test-retest reliability for VO2 was 0.98. In conclusion, the UBE is an accurate and reliable device for determination of VO2Peak in trained swimmers, and further may be a viable alternative trainingVO2Peak injured athlete.

  • Anaerobic and Performance Adaptations to a "Live High-Train Low" Approach Using Simulated Altitude Exposure

    The purpose of this study was to determine if a seven-day live high–train low (LHTL) simulated altitude exposure could improve (a) anaerobic and/or aerobic capacity (VO2peak) in trained cyclists (n = 10) and (b) VO2peak and/or 400m swimming performance in collegiate swimmers (n=8). In procedures approved by the EMU Human Subjects Review Board, cyclists performed seven cycle Ergometer trials to measure maximal mean power output (MMPO4min), maximal accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD), and VO2peak, whereas swimmers completed five incremental Arm Ergometer trials (VO2peak) and 400m swimming performance trials before and after LHTL. No significant changes were observed in any measured parameter. Therefore, the conclusion of this study is that a 7day simulated altitude exposure of 2,500m for 8.5 hours each night is insufficient to result in changes in MAOD, VO2peak, or performance among highly trained cyclists and swimmers.
