    Abstract:

    Triethylene glycol (TEG) is generally used to adjust the water dew point in natural gas processes. Unfortunately, only very few sets of experimental data regarding solubilities of these humidity absorbents in supercritical natural gas components have been reported in the literature partly due to the difficulties in such very low concentration measurements. Therefore, a satisfactory accuracy of measurements is not obvious, and the reliability of the corresponding data must be checked prior to their application. In this study, we focus on presenting the results of a thermodynamic Assessment Test (consistency Test) for experimental solubility data of triethylene glycol in supercritical methane and carbon dioxide. The Gibbs Duhem equation in terms of pressure, fugacity coefficients, solubilities of triethylene glycol in gas phase, and compressibility factor of gas phase is applied for the consistency Test. The Soave-Redlich-Kwong (SRK) equation of state (EoS) along with the van der Waals (vdW2) mixing rules is used to represent the corresponding solubilities. The results show that three sets of the four investigated experimental data sets are thermodynamically consistent, while one data set is not fully consistent.

  • P170 Using the COPD Assessment Test as a tool to assess symptoms in COVID recovery

    Abstract:

    Introduction COVID-19 presents with acute symptoms of cough, phlegm and pyrexia and can cause severe acute respiratory distress. Little is known about the symptoms patients face following an acute admission for COVID-19 and there is no validated questionnaire to assess patients. This cross sectional study aims to explore the symptoms patients display following an admission with COVID-19 using the COPD Assessment Test (CAT). Methods This was an observational cohort study following patients who recovered from COVID-19. Participants were called after discharge to assess their ongoing symptoms including the CAT and their rehabilitation needs. Correlations between characteristics and CAT scores were performed using Spearman’s rank Test. Results 131 patients were assessed following their admission (77 (59%) male, mean [SD] age 60[14]). 31% had a pre-existing respiratory condition. Their mean [SD] hospital stay was 10[12] days and 21 (16%) participants required mechanical ventilation. The mean[SD] time to follow up call was 32[18] days post-discharge. Total CAT scores ranged from 0 to 34 with mean of 11.4[7.8]. 52% of patients had a CAT score ≥10 with scores highest for the breathlessness, activities, sleep, confidence and energy items. Of the patients without a pre-existing respiratory condition 42% had a score of ≥10 and in patients with a pre-existing respiratory condition this proportion was 75%. Breathlessness, activity limitations and energy and were the highest reported symptoms for both groups. There were no statistically significant correlations for the CAT with length of stay, number of days ventilated, self-reported physical activity or time from discharge. Conclusion The CAT total and item scores can provide insight into the severity of symptom burden for patients following a hospitalisation from COVID-19.     There is evidence to demonstrate the ongoing symptoms of COVID-19; however, there are currently no agreed outcomes to assess these symptoms. This study examined the use of the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) Assessment Test (CAT) for patients recovering from COVID-19. 131 patients who were admitted with COVID-19 were followed up over the phone to assess symptoms. The median (IQR) CAT score was 10 (5-16). Cough, phlegm and chest tightness domains were within range for healthy people, but there was evidence of significant breathlessness, loss of energy, and activity and sleep disturbance. The CAT is a useful tool to assess symptoms of COVID-19 recovery.

    Anxiety and depression are common comorbidities in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and affect patients’ health status [1, 2]. Health status in COPD patients is frequently assessed by the St George’s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ), which is a validated disease-specific questionnaire widely used in clinical trials [3], but complex and time-consuming to complete and score. Consequently, the COPD Assessment Test (CAT) has been developed [4]. This is a disease-specific health status questionnaire containing eight items with good sensitivity, reliability and responsiveness [4]. CAT scores are strongly positively correlated with SGRQ scores in patients with COPD [4]. Therefore, it is reasonable to hypothesise that those COPD patients with symptoms of anxiety and/or depression will report higher CAT scores (equalling worse health status) compared to those without symptoms. The laTest version of the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) document [5] recommends the CAT as a tool to assess the impact of COPD on the individual patient beyond airflow limitation. Although it was known that clinically relevant symptoms of anxiety and depression are more common in patients in GOLD stage IV compared to patients in GOLD stages I and II [1], the frequency distribution of patients with symptoms of anxiety and depression across the updated GOLD classification remains unknown.     Rationale: The Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Assessment Test (CAT) is an eight-item questionnaire designed to assess and quantify the impact of COPD symptoms on health status. COPD exacerbations impair quality of life and are characterized by worsening respiratory symptoms from the stable state. We hypothesized that CAT scores at exacerbation relate to exacerbation severity as measured by exacerbation duration, lung function impairment, and systemic inflammation.Objectives: To evaluate the usefulness of the CAT to assess exacerbation severity.Methods: One hundred sixty-one patients enrolled in the London COPD cohort completed the CAT at baseline (stable state), exacerbation, and during recovery between April 2010 and June 2011.Measurements and Main Results: Frequent exacerbators had significantly higher baseline CAT scores than infrequent exacerbators (19.5 ± 6.6 vs. 16.8 ± 8.0, P = 0.025).
