Additional support was provided by Pró-Reitoria de Pesquisa da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG).A three-year-old female African pygmy hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris), born and domiciled in Brazil, presented apathy, prostration, and difficulty to stay standing. Its parents were siblings but did not present clinical signs related to this condition. As its clinical condition worsened, the animal was euthanized and referred for necropsy. No gross lesions were found in the central nervous system (CNS). Histologically, there was vacuolation with axonal degeneration in the white matter of the CNS and in peripheral nervous tissue. The Kluver-Barrera (KB) stain confirmed demyelination in vacuolated areas. Immunohistochemistry using several neural markers confirmed astrocytosis and microgliosis associated with vacuolated areas. In addition, there was a mild decrease in the immuno intensity of myelin proteolipid protein (PLP) in these areas. These results suggest a genetic origin of the present demyelination, which resulted in the wobbly syndrome described in this report

La neoplasia estaba localizada en el tejido subcutaneo de la region cervical y se extendia hacia la zona axilar y parte de la pared toracica. El erizo fue internado para realizar la remocion quirurgica de la neoplasia, pero murio durante el periodo transoperatorio. No fue posible determinar si existia metastasis, ya que los duenos del animal no permitieron el estudio post mortem. El presente trabajo tuvo como proposito describir la morfologia microscopica y ultraestructural de dicha neoplasia, asi como el manejo clinico y quirurgico del paciente, para aportar informacion sobre enfermedades neoplasicas en el erizo. En general, es escasa la informacion acerca de las enfermedades que afectan a la fauna silvestre. Actualmente en Mexico muchas personas estan interesadas en adquirir al erizo pigmeo africano en calidad de animal de compania. Es necesario que el medico veterinario dedicado a la clinica de este tipo de animales, tenga la mayor informacion posible y considere al carcinoma de glandulas sebaceas como diagnostico diferencial entre los tumores cutaneos del erizo

The neoplasm, was localized in the subcutis of the cervicall region and extendend towards the axilar region and along the thorax. The animal was admitted for surgical removal of the tumor but died during the procedure. It was not possible to rule out metastatic dissemination since the post-mortem study was not authorized by the owner. The aim of this report is to describe the microscopic and ultrastructural morphology of this neoplasm, as well as the clinical and surgical management of the patient, in order to bring information about neoplastic diseases in this species. There is little information on diseases affecting wildlife animals. Currently, in Mexico, there is big interest on acquiring pygmy African hedgehogs as pets. For this reason, it is necessary that veterinarians, working on these type of animals, have more information and take into account the sebaceous gland carcinoma as differential diagnosis among skin tumors in the hedgehog.

Efficacy of a combination of 10% imidacloprid and 1% moxidectin against Caparinia tripilis in African pygmy hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris)
Parasites & Vectors, 2012Co-Authors: Kyurim Kim, Kyusung Ahn, Sungshik ShinAbstract:Background The efficacy and safety of a combination formulation of 10% imidacloprid + 1.0% moxidectin spot-on (Advocate^® for Cats, Bayer Animal Health GmbH, Leverkusen, Germany) was tested in 40 African pygmy hedgehogs ( Atelerix albiventris ) naturally infested with Caparinia tripilis . Methods The optimal dosage level of the combination for hedgehogs was determined by assigning 20 hedgehogs into three treatment groups (0.1, 0.4 and 1.6 ml/Kg b.w.), and one untreated control group of 5 hedgehogs each. Twenty naturally infested hedgehogs were then randomly assigned to either treatment or control group with 10 animals each, and the number of live mites was counted from 13 body regions on day 0, 3, 9, 16, and 30 after single treatment at the dosage level of 0.1 ml/Kg. Results Before the chemotherapy, the highest density of mite was observed in external ear canals followed by the dorsal and the lowest in the ventral regions of the body surface. The dosage level of 0.1 ml/Kg, which corresponded to the recommended dosage level for cats, containing 10 mg imidacloprid and 1 mg moxidectin was also the optimal dosage level for hedgehogs. No hedgehogs in the treatment group showed live mites from day 3 post treatment. Side effects such as ataxia, depression, nausea, and weight fluctuation were not observed during the whole period of study. Conclusions This report suggests that a combination formulation of 0.1 ml/Kg of 10% imidacloprid + 1% moxidectin spot-on for cats is also useful for the control of Caparinia tripilis infestation in hedgehogs.

Korean Journal of Parasitology, 2012Co-Authors: Da Hee Kim, Kyusung Ahn, Sungshik ShinAbstract:In February 2010, dermatitis characterized by scale and self-trauma due to puritis was recognized in a group of 22 four-toed hedgehogs (Atelerix albiventris Wagner, 1841) from a local pet shop in Gwangju, Korea. Microscopic examinations of skin scraping samples showed numerous mites of all developmental stages. Morphologically, pedicels of adult mites were short and unjointed. Tarsal caruncles were bell-shaped on all legs of males while they were absent on legs III and IV of females. Three long setae on the third pair of legs in both sexes were present. Adult males had posterior end of the abdomen with trilobate projection on each side, each lobe with a long seta. Based on these features, the mites were identified as Caparinia tripilis. This is the first report of caparinic mite infestation in hedgehogs from Korea. Identification keys for the family Psoroptidae and the genus Caparinia are provided.

Uterine polyp and leiomyoma in an African pigmy hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris)

Es por ello que se han realizado diversos estudios sobre aspectos de salud y enfermedad de esta especie. El objetivo del trabajo fue presentar un caso de un pólipo y leiomioma uterinos en un erizo pigmeo africano. En 2016, una hembra de 2 años se presentó a la consulta con hematuria. La radiografía y ecografía abdominales revelaron una masa intrauterina. Se realizó ovariohisterectomía y se constató la presencia de dos masas de tejido. Mediante estudios histopatológico e histoquímico se formuló un diagnóstico de pólipo y leiomioma uterinos. La paciente se recuperó totalmente. Doce meses postintervención la misma concurrió a consulta para realizar un control anual en el cual se no se evidenciaron signos clínicos de la enfermedad.The African pigmy hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris) has become an exotic pet. Therefore, interest on health and disease aspects of this species has increased. The aim of this study was to describe a case of uterine polyp and leiomyoma in an African pigmy hedgehog. In 2016, a 2 years old female came to the clinic presenting hematuria. Abdominal radiography and ultrasound were performed and revealed an intrauterine mass. An ovariohysterectomy was performed and the presence of two tissue masses was observed. histopathological and histochemical analysis of the neoformations confirmed the diagnosis of uterine polyp and leiomyoma. The patient recovered completely.
