Gerrothorax pulcherrimus also possesses a derived pectoral morphology that includes an interlocking claviculocleithral complex and an interclavicle with paired posterolateral projections and a transversely truncated posterior margin. Gerrothorax pustuloglomeratus is a junior synonym of G. pulcherrimus; other Gerrothorax species cannot be differentiated from G. pulcherrimus. Flat-headed temnospondyls have been interpreted as having achieved a large gape by raising the skull rather than by lowering the jaw. Elevation of the skull occurred by Atlanto-Occipital rotation, and was facilitated by a radius of curvature of the dorsal part of the condylar facets that is shorter than that of the inferior part. From a resting, closed mouth position, G. pulcherrimus was capable of elevating the skull through an excursion of approximately 50°, a movement that rotated the quadrate forward and protruded the lower jaw. An elongate, broadly open neural canal in the Atlanto-Occipital region, and dorsal displacement of the occipital condyles, are related to relieving the spinal medulla of the sharp angular deformation that head lifting might entail.Organismic and Evolutionary Biolog

2018Co-Authors: Díaz Gutiérrez, Diana MarcelaAbstract:El propósito de este trabajo fue realizar un estudio morfométrico de la articulación Atlanto-Occipital, de tipo exploratorio, con una muestra de 9 cadáveres esqueletizados, provenientes de la colección de restos óseos del Laboratorio de Antropología Física de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Se tomaron 7 medidas en cada estructura, se evaluó la forma de las superficies articulares, y se realizaron calcos con cinta transparente de las superficies articulares para evaluar la congruencia. Los resultados mostraron que la forma predominante del atlas es la forma de “8”, y en el cóndilo la “deformada”. La correspondencia entre las formas de las facetas articulares y de los cóndilos occipitales, apenas supera el 40 % de los casos, y la congruencia entre la superficie articular del atlas y del cóndilo debe enfocarse en comparar sus bordes más que el área total, sin olvidar que se trata de una articulación móvil.Abstract: The purpose of this work was to perform a morphometric study of the atlanto - occipital Joint, exploratory type, with a sample of 9 skeletonized cadavers, from the collection of bone remains from the anthropology laboratory of the National University of Colombia. Seven measurements were taken in eac h structure, the shape of the Joint surfaces was evaluated, and tracings were made with transparent tape of the Joint surfaces to assess congruence. The results showed that the predominant form of the atlas is the "8" shape, and in the condyle the "deforme d" shape. The correspondence between the forms of the articular facets and the occipital condyles, barely exceeds 40% of the cases, and the congruence between the articular surface of the atlas and the condyle should focus on comparing its edges, more than the total area, without forgetting that it is a mobile articulatio

BACKGROUND : Previous studies have described hypoalgesic effects of neck manipulative interventions over TrPs in the cervical musculature. There is a lack of studies analyzing these mechanisms over TrPs of muscles innervated by the trigeminal nerve. METHODS: One hundred twenty-two volunteers, 31 men and 91 women, between the ages of 18 and 30 years, with latent TrPs in the masseter muscle, were randomly divided into 3 groups: a manipulative group who received an Atlanto-Occipital Joint thrust, a soft tissue group who received an inhibition technique over the suboccipital muscles, and a control group who did not receive an intervention. Pressure pain thresholds over latent TrPs in the masseter and temporalis muscles, and active mouth opening were assessed pretreatment and 2 minutes posttreatment by a blinded assessor. Mixed-model analyses of variance (ANOVA) were used to examine the effects of interventions on each outcome, with group as the between-subjects variable and time as the within-subjects variable.
