A new measurement system of very high temperature in Atomic Pile using ultrasonic delay time

No.01CH37239), 2001Co-Authors: Dong-gyu Jeong, Jong-ho Choi, Duck-young KoAbstract:The temperature measurement of very high temperature core melt is of importance in LAVA (lower-plenum Arrested Vessel Attack) experiment in which gap formation between core melt and the reactor lower head, and the effect of the gap on thermal behavior are to be measured. The existing temperature measurement techniques have some problems, which the thermocouple, one of the contact methods, is restricted to under 2000/spl deg/C, and the infrared thermometry, one of the non-contact methods, is unable to measure an internal temperature and very sensitive to the interference from reacted gases. So, in order to solve these problems, the delay time of ultrasonic wavelets due to high temperature is suggested. As a first stage, a molten material temperature was measured up to 2000/spl deg/C. Also, the optimization design of the UTS (ultrasonic temperature sensor) with persistence at the high temperature was suggested in this paper. And the utilization of the theory suggested in this paper and the efficiency of the developed system are certified by performing experiments.

Consisting of three sections, it is an account of the development of the first nuclear reactor by a team of scientists led by Enrico Farmi. The first section briefly reviews the early work on nuclear fission and neutron emission, the impact of Einstein's letter to President Roosevelt, the establishment of the Manhattan Engineer District, and the preliminary work on the design and construction of the first Atomic Pile at Chicago. The section ends with an hour-by-hour description of the experiment culminating in the achievement of the first self-sustaining nuclear reaction on December 2, 1942. The second section consists of Fermi's own story of the first Atomic chain reaction, written in observance of the tenth anniversary of the event. The third section is an account by Fermi's wife of a Party to celebrate the success of the experiment. Nor narrative reveals the great secrecy surrounding the work of Fermi's team. The booklet has numerous photographs of the scientists involved in the Project, sketches of the first Atomic Pile and a Photograph of a graph indicating the neutron intensity during various stages of the operation of the Atomic Pile. Atomic Pile why the united nations overstates the threat of nuclear terrorism
2013Co-Authors: Simon SneddonAbstract:The presentation explores the background to nuclear weapons, the range of threats often included under the banner of nuclear terrorism before looking at the reaction of the UN and other sources. It concludes that the likelihood of nuclear terrorism is negligible, but the likelihood of a terrorist RDD is considerably higher, and should be the focus of future UN and international concerns.
