  • sex differences in the implications of partner physical Attractiveness for the trajectory of marital satisfaction
Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 2014
Co-Authors: Andrea L Meltzer, James K Mcnulty, Grace L Jackson, Benjamin R Karney
    Abstract:

Do men value physical Attractiveness in a mate more than women? Scientists in numerous disciplines believe that they do, but recent research using speed-dating paradigms suggests that males and females are equally influenced by physical Attractiveness when choosing potential mates. Nevertheless, the premise of the current work is that sex differences in the importance of physical Attractiveness are most likely to emerge in research on long-term relationships. Accordingly, the current work drew from 4 independent, longitudinal studies to examine sex differences in the implications of partner physical Attractiveness for trajectories of marital satisfaction. In all 4 studies, both partners’ physical Attractiveness was objectively rated at baseline, and both partners reported their marital satisfaction up to 8 times over the first 4 years of marriage. Whereas husbands were more satisfied at the beginning of the marriage and remained more satisfied over the next 4 years to the extent that they had an attractive wife, wives were no more or less satisfied initially or over the next 4 years to the extent that they had an attractive husband. Most importantly, a direct test indicated that partner physical Attractiveness played a larger role in predicting husbands’ satisfaction than predicting wives’ satisfaction. These findings strengthen support for the idea that sex differences in self-reported preferences for physical Attractiveness do have implications for long-term relationship outcomes.

  • beyond initial attraction physical Attractiveness in newlywed marriage
    Journal of Family Psychology, 2008
Co-Authors: James K Mcnulty, Lisa A Neff, Benjamin R Karney
    Abstract:

Physical appearance plays a crucial role in shaping new relationships, but does it continue to affect established relationships, such as marriage? In the current study, the authors examined how observer ratings of each spouse's facial Attractiveness and the difference between those ratings were associated with (a) observations of social support behavior and (b) reports of marital satisfaction. In contrast to the robust and almost universally positive effects of levels of Attractiveness on new relationships, the only association between levels of Attractiveness and the outcomes of these marriages was that attractive husbands were less satisfied. Further, in contrast to the importance of matched Attractiveness to new relationships, similarity in Attractiveness was unrelated to spouses' satisfaction and behavior. Instead, the relative difference between partners' levels of Attractiveness appeared to be most important in predicting marital behavior, such that both spouses behaved more positively in relationships in which wives were more attractive than their husbands, but they behaved more negatively in relationships in which husbands were more attractive than their wives. These results highlight the importance of dyadic examinations of the effects of spouses' qualities on their marriages.

  • body size physical Attractiveness and body image among young adult women relationships to sexual experience and sexual esteem
    Journal of Sex Research, 1998
    Co-Authors: Michael W Wiederman, Shannon R Hurst
    Abstract:

Although links between women's sexuality and body size, Attractiveness, and body image may seem apparent, little empirical work has been conducted on this topic. In the current study, young adult women (N = 192) completed questionnaires and were weighed and rated for facial Attractiveness. In general, current body size, experimenter‐rated facial Attractiveness, and self‐rated facial and bodily Attractiveness were related in some ways to current relationship status and sexual experience. General body dissatisfaction, avoidance of social settings due to appearance concerns, and degree of investment in one's physical appearance were unrelated to relationship status and sexual experience. Higher sexual esteem was related to subjective views of Attractiveness, but not to actual body size or experimenter ratings of facial Attractiveness.

  • physical Attractiveness body image and women s sexual self schema
    Psychology of Women Quarterly, 1997
    Co-Authors: Michael W Wiederman, Shannon R Hurst
    Abstract:

Recently, Andersen and Cyranowski (1994) presented a self-report measure of women's sexual self-schema, or cognitive view of the self regarding sexuality. In the current study, we investigated potential relationships between women's sexual self-schema and physical Attractiveness, body size and shape, and body image. Young adult women (N = 199) completed questionnaires and were weighed, measured, and rated for facial Attractiveness. Results revealed that sexual self-schema was unrelated to body size or shape, general body dissatisfaction, history of teasing about weight, and degree of investment in personal appearance. Sexual self-schema scores significantly correlated with experimenter-rated facial Attractiveness, self-rated facial and bodily Attractiveness, and degree of social avoidance due to concerns over personal appearance, however. In a multiple regression analysis, only self-rated facial Attractiveness and social avoidance were unique predictors. Results are discussed with regard to implications f...

  • evaluating self and partner physical Attractiveness
    Body Image, 2007
Co-Authors: Viren Swami, Adrian Furnham, Chrissa Georgiades, Lily Pang
    Abstract:

This study used a novel questionnaire to examine ratings of self and partner physical Attractiveness. Seventy-two men and 83 women estimated their own and their opposite-sex partner's overall physical Attractiveness and the Attractiveness of various body parts and measures. They also answered six simple questions concerning physical Attractiveness. Results showed significant gender differences in self-estimates of overall facial Attractiveness and upper body features. In general, and regardless of gender, participants rated their opposite-sex partners as being significantly more attractive than themselves. In addition, the results showed that body weight and facial Attractiveness were the best predictors of overall physical Attractiveness. Implications of these results in terms of social biases are considered.

  • modeling of investment Attractiveness of countries using entropy analysis of regional stock markets
Global Journal of Environmental Science and Management, 2019
Co-Authors: Hanna Danylchuk, N Chebanova, Nadiia Reznik, Y Vitkovskyi
    Abstract:

The current study focuses on the problem of determining investment attrаctiveness of countries by means of monitoring regional stock markets. The method of using the permutation entropy as a model of investment Attractiveness estimation is suggested. We have calculated the permutation entropy for the time series of stock markets of countries for the period from 2005 to 2018. The countries with high, middle or low income in Europe, Central Asia, East Asia, the Pacific, and North America were selected for the study. The article presents the results of modeling and analysis of dynamic properties of regional stock markets using the permutation entropy. The behavior of the permutation entropy and stock markets is analyzed and conclusions about the possibility of rapid monitoring of the investment Attractiveness of countries by classifying the states of the stock markets of these countries are drawn. Particular attention is paid to crisis periods. It has been shown that the permutation entropy rapidly decreases in a universal way in the pre-crisis period, which can serve as an indicator of the precursor for crisis phenomena. Determining the pre-crisis, actual crisis and post-crisis periods will allow the investor to make the right decision on time. The advantages of using the permutation entropy method as a tool for high-frequency monitoring of stock markets and modeling the investment Attractiveness of countries are pointed out. The results of determining investment Attractiveness in terms of the permutation entropy and ratings of the world countries, compiled by the world-wide rating agencies and literature, are compared.

  • an assessment of positive illusions of the physical Attractiveness of romantic partners
Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, 2011
Co-Authors: Dick P H Barelds, Pieternel Dijkstra, Namkje Koudenburg, Viren Swami
    Abstract:

Positive illusions about a partner’s physical Attractiveness occur when individuals’ ratings of their partner’s Attractiveness are more positive than more objective ratings. Ratings that may serve as a’’reality benchmark’ include ratings by the partner him/herself and observer ratings. The present study compared the effects of using different reality benchmarks on the strength of positive partner physical Attractiveness illusions (n = 70 couples). Results showed that individuals positively biased both their own and their partner’s physical Attractiveness. As a consequence, using a partner’s self-ratings as a reality benchmark results in an underestimation of positive illusions. Presenting participants with photographs had a small effect on physical Attractiveness ratings provided by women, showing that photographs, to some extent, might constrain positive illusions.
