  • effectiveness of a stress management program in smoking cessation randomized control trial
    European Respiratory Journal, 2013
Co-Authors: Maria Michou, Stamatoula Tsikrika, Christina Gratziou, Christina Darviri
    Abstract:

Although smoking habit remains a public health issue, current therapies for smoking cessation are not very effective. Stress can be a critical factor for inefficient results. A non-blind randomized control trial was designed to examine if a stress management program, as a complementary therapy, can increase smoking cessation rates. 49 individuals participated in the research (26 interventions and 23 controls). Participants received medication or/and medical counseling. In the intervention arm an 8 week stress management program was given, including: progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery and Autogenic Training, with lifestyle instructions. Measurements included: a Daily Routine, Lifestyle and Health Questionnaire, Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Health Locus of Control Scale (HLC), Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21), Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence and Salivary Cortisol. Both groups resulted in a statistically significant reduction in daily cigarettes and nicotine dependence. The intervention’s group smoking rates were higher than the control’s group (77% and 43% respectively). Additionally, the interventions had a significant reduction in PSS score (p

  • Quality of life, work motivation, burn-out and stress perceptions benefits of a stress management program by Autogenic Training for emergency room staff: A pilot study
    Mental Illness, 2019
Co-Authors: Pasquale Caponnetto, Rosanna Magro, Lucio Inguscio, Maria Concetta Cannella
    Abstract:

Emergency room have particularly stressful work situations. Emergency room personnel cope with stressors on a daily basis. These stressors can be risks factor for burn out and for reduced quality of life and work motivation. Emergency room staff of one of ASP 3 CT urban hospital in Acireale, Italy participated to stress management program by Autogenic Training twice a month for 16 weeks. This program were prepared based on existing research and studies, and were conducted by clinical psychologists. Abstract:

: Emergency room have particularly stressful work situations. We found that the mean value in pre-test is significantly different from mean value in post-test for: Perceived Stress Scale PPS (t=7.72 with 27 df and P<0.001); Euro Quality for life (t=-14,13 with 27 df and P<0.001); Work motivation assessed by Visual Analogue scale VAS (t=-4.52 with 27 df and P<0.001). In the Maslach Burnout Inventory, the mean value is significantly different for emotional exhaustion sub-scale (t=5.64 with 27 with 27 df and P<0.001) and for depersonalization subscale (t=6.67 with 27 df and P<0.001). No significant difference was observed for the personal accomplishment sub-scale. This research suggests that psychological interventions with emergency room staff are effective. Our study showed effectiveness of an Autogenic and stress management Training in improvement of quality of life, work motivation, burn-out and stress perceptions for emergency department team.

  • cognitive behavioral smoking cessation during alcohol detoxification treatment a randomized controlled trial
    Drug and Alcohol Dependence, 2012
Co-Authors: Sandra E Mueller, Sylvie Petitjean, Gerhard A Wiesbeck
    Abstract:

Abstract Background Among alcohol-dependent subjects tobacco smoking is very common and causes a variety of health risks. Therefore, it is necessary to reach this high-risk population early with appropriate smoking interventions. Methods Smokers in alcohol detoxification treatment were offered to participate in a smoking cessation study. A total of 103 patients was enrolled and randomly assigned to either the experimental group (EG) receiving a cognitive behavioral smoking cessation treatment (CBT) or the control group (CG) receiving Autogenic Training. Smoking outcomes were measured by self-report and carbon monoxide levels, directly after intervention and 6 months later, where additionally alcohol outcomes were recorded. Results There were no differences in smoking quit rates directly after intervention. However, patients in the EG were significantly more likely to reduce their daily cigarette use compared to CG ( p  = .046). Sub-group analyses revealed that heavy smokers (FTND score ≥ 7) seemed to profit most in the EG regarding cigarette reduction. After 6 months, these positive effects had leveled out. No evidence was found that smoking cessation might jeopardize alcohol outcomes. Conclusions Results suggest that alcohol-dependent smokers are interested in smoking interventions even during alcohol detoxification. CBT is promising in short-term smoking outcomes and in the approach of harm reduction, however, long-term effects are desirable. These findings underline the feasibility and the importance to provide smoking cessation interventions to patients in alcohol detoxification treatments.

  • Peningkatan Durasi Pemberian Asi pada Ibu Post Partum Melalui Relaksasi Autogenic Training
'Universitas Indonesia Directorate of Research and Public Service', 2016
    Co-Authors: Juanita Farida, Suratmi Suratmi
    Abstract:

Abstract Increased Duration of Breastfeeding on Postpartum Mothers through Autogenic Training Relaxation. The failures of breastfeeding are mostly caused by mothers’ inconfidence. Nurses can give psychological support by Autogenic Training relaxation which strengthens mothers` confidence to breastfeed exclusively. This method teaches mothers in building a positive intention and motivation to help the process of breastfeeding. This study aims to prove that Autogenic Training relaxation may expend the duration of breastfeeding. By using an experimental, posttest only - non equivalent control group design, 30 subjects are taken based on the criteria and divided into two groups. After providing Autogenic Training for 3 weeks, post-test conducted on the first, third and sixth months. Data were analyzed using one-tailed independent t test with α= 0.05. The analysis showed that the intervention group could breastfeed longer than control group (p= 0.005). It can be concluded that Autogenic Training affected the duration of breastfeeding. These results can be considered that Autogenic Training as an intervention in support for exclusive breastfeeding. Keywords: Autogenic Training, breastfeeding, duration, relaxatio
