  • Autopoiesis en la teoría de sistemas de Niklas Luhmann : reflexiones para una reontologización comunicativa
    'Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona', 2018
    Co-Authors: Pont Vidal Josep
    Abstract:

Niklas Luhmann's theory of self-referential systems is a constantly changing theory. A reconceptualization and analysis of the original concept of Autopoiesis and its adaptation were considered in this study, with the objective to analyze the possibilities to overcome its biological limitations and exploring communicative possibilities with the existence of a conscience. This procedure will allow to equate the concept with the binomial Luhmannian ego/alter in an explanatory plane of the social order, and present the functional equivalent of the double contingency concept as an operational option for a systemic theory ontologization

  • Autopoiesis and the science of public administration essence sense and nonsense
    Organization Studies, 1993
    Co-Authors: Walter J M Kickert
    Abstract:

The model of 'Autopoiesis' — originally a biological model of a living system- has stimulated some outstanding social and administrative scientists to creative thinking about possible implications and applications. In this paper, the applica bility of the model to the science of (public) administration is discussed. Applying a natural scientific model to a social science is hazardous. The paper begins with a description of the original model and a discussion of its systems theoretical impli cations. Next a review of the various interpretations of Autopoiesis in different fields of the social sciences is presented. Finally an attempt is made to perform a careful translation and cautious application. The Autopoiesis model seems to offer new insights into the self-governance of organizations. The model opens a fundamentally different perspective on the relationship between organization and environment. From an organization science point of view the model seems intriguing enough to have a close look at it.

  • Mapping the technical and social dynamics in project management: a test of the Badiouan model
'Glucksman Library University of Limerick', 2019
    Co-Authors: Keaveney James
    Abstract:

peer-reviewedThis study analyses the dynamics of a project management process and its outcomes by developing a framework that integrates Badiouan dialectical materialism to operationalise a Luhmannian systems theoretic conceptualisation of the phenomenon. By considering the dynamics associated with processes of project manager “(self-) identity work” (Alvesson and Willmott, 2002, p. 625), project manager psychic system Autopoiesis, or “the self-reproduction of [consciousness] by [the thoughts] that have in turn been produced in and by the [psychic] system” (Luhmann 2013a, p.43), and Badiouan intensive variation in a coappearing that is “a dimension of [project manager] multiples which is not that of their being qua being (covered by ontology), but that of their appearances in worlds, or their localization (or beingthere)” (Badiou, 2013, p. 579), the study discovered an isomorphic relationship linking these concepts that enabled a rich multi-perspectival interpretation of project management dynamics and confirmed the utility of the Badiouan model. Dynamics of self-identity work ↔ Dynamics of Autopoiesis ↔ Dynamics of intensive variation Figure 1: Project management dynamics and isomorphic inquiry Extensive interview results support the framework’s contention that project manager coappearing in a project world may be conceptualised as a topological, tri-modal system comprised of social coexistence, technical coalignment and outcome-oriented coachievement. The results suggest that the dynamics of intensive variation may be modelled as the transitioning of this system in response to factors that are functions of project manager attributes, project management functions and project management constructs, changes in the real-world state of affairs and identifiability of the project name. The study concludes that modal intensities, inter-modal relations and levels of prevailing contingency in coappearing all contribute to determining the type of dynamics that can be observed in a particular project world. Optimal dynamics are manifested in resonant, self-referential, system Autopoiesis whilst weak and dysfunctional dynamics reflect instances of unresolved contingency, varying levels of suboptimal modal intensities and inter-modal relations are either indirect or broken. By providing an evidentially supported account of project management dynamics, this study contributes new knowledge that is relevant for both practitioner and research communities and demonstrates the value of such a novel and richly promising Luhmannian/Badiouan approach to future project and general management inquiry

  • Kent Academic Repository Full text document (pdf) Versions of research Citation for published version Link to record in KAR The Contribution of Systemic Thought to Critical Realism
    2020
    Co-Authors: John Mingers
    Abstract:

Abstract Critical realism, especially as developed by Bhaskar, embodies at its heart systemic and holistic concepts such as totality, emergence, open systems, stratification, Autopoiesis and holistic causality. These concepts have their own long history of development in disciplines such as systems thinking and cybernetics but, there is an absence in Bhaskar's writings, and that absence is a lack of any reference to the corresponding systems literature. The purpose of this paper is threefold: i) to demonstrate the extent of this correspondence; ii) to show that critical realism can benefit from an exposure to these other discourses; and iii) to show that systems thinking too can gain philosophically from critical realism

  • a comparison of maturana s autopoietic social theory and giddens theory of structuration
    Systems Research, 1996
    Co-Authors: John Mingers
    Abstract:

The theory of Autopoiesis developed by Maturana and Varela to explain living systems has been applied in various ways to social systems. However, whether such an application can be more than an analogy or metaphor is highly debatable. Maturana himself has generally not claimed that social systems were themselves autopoietic, but were the medium within which autopoietic systems could interact and become structurally coupled. This paper contrasts Autopoiesis, and Maturana's social theory, with Giddens' theory of structuration which, at first sight, appears quite similar. The conclusion is that whilst Autopoiesis does not fit structuration theory, there are valuable complementarities with Maturana's social theory.

  • law as an autopoietic system
    1995
    Co-Authors: John Mingers
    Abstract:

The application of Autopoiesis to law has developed from Luhmann’s work on social Autopoiesis, described in Chapter 8. As we saw, he analyzed society into a number of different functional subsystems, each based on a particular mode of communication. One of these was law. Luhmann had developed a sociology of law, published in 1972 as Rechtssoziologie, before he utilized Autopoiesis. An English translation appeared in 1985 (A Sociological Theory of Law), and this contained an extra chapter incorporating the basic notions of Autopoiesis. Since then Luhmann has written further papers (1985c, 1987b, 1987c, 1989, 1992a, b); the idea has been taken up especially by Teubner (1984, 1987b, 1987c, 1989, 1990, 1993) and has generated a good deal of controversy (Teubner 1987a; Cardozo Law Review 13(5), 1992; Amselek and Mac-Cormick, 1991) within law. Teubner has applied it to the problems of legal regulation (1985, 1987d), Power (1994) to accounting and the environment, and King and Piper (1990) have explored this characterization of law in a book about how the law “thinks” about children.
