    Abstract:

    The plant morphology, anatomical characters of stem, SEM of pollen and seed coat surfaces were used to reassess the taxonomic relationships between the genera Bassia, Chenolea and Kochia . In addition, the species of the genus Bassia represented in Egypt were systematically revised. The results clearly indicate considerably differences between the three studied genera and this contradict the grouping of them in one genus as done by Scott (1978) and support the treatment of them as different genera. Bassia aegyptiaca is recorded as species nova.

    Bassia muricata (Chenopodiaceae) is a polymorphic species. The present study has been carried out on the different races distributed in Northern and Eastern Egypt. The study based on morphological and anatomical characters, in addition to SEM investigations of both pollen grains and seed coat sculpture, revealed the presence of four distinct races which are dealt here as varieties. Two of them, var. hadidii and var. sinaica are recorded to the first time (varieties nova).

  • Effects of Water Supply and Sand Burial on Seed Germination and Seedling Emergence of Four Psammophytes

    The effects of water supply and sand burial on seed germination and seedling emergence of four psammophytes were experimented.The results showed that Bassia dasyphylla preferred water in the process of seed germination and seedling emergence.The seed germination rate of Bassia dasyphylla increased with increasing soil moisture.The most suitable water content for the seed of Artemisia ordosica,Ammopiptanthus mongolicus and Hippophae rhamnoides to germinate was 15%~20%.Seed germination rate reduced when encountered with drought or over moist enviroments.Sand burial depth had significant effect on seed germination and seedling emergence.The seed germination rate of Bassia dasyphylla reached the highest with no burial.The most suitable sand burial depth for Artemisia ordosica,Ammopiptanthus mongolicus and Hippophae rhamnoides were 0.5 cm,1.0 cm and 1.0 cm respectively.

  • Experimental Study of Effects of Artificial Dew on Bassia dasyphylla and Agriophyllum squarrosum

    The effects of foliar absorption of dew by hairy leaves of Bassia dasyphylla and nonhairy leaves of Agriophyllum squarrosum on shoot water potential, relative water content, net photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, basal diameter, aboveground dry mass and root dry mass were investigated. Bassia dasyphylla and Agriophyllum squarrosum seedlings were subjected to contrasting water regimes (normal condition and deficient water) and three kinds of artificial dew simulation (none, once per week and three times per week). The results are as follows. Artificial dew significantly increased shoot stomatal conductance and aboveground dry mass of Bassia dasyphylla seedlings subjected to water deficient and normal condition. Obvious responses in shoot water potential, relative water content, net photosynthesis, and root dry mass were observed for Bassia dasyphylla seedlings subjected to water deficient. The little effects of dew on basal diameter were observed. No obvious effects were found in shoot water potential, net photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, basal diameter, aboveground dry mass and root dry mass of nonhairy leaves of Agriophyllum squarrosum seedlings subjected to water deficient and normal condition. Obviously, we can draw a conclusion that hairy leafs of Bassia dasyphylla may improve leaf water status by dew absorption, while nonhairy leaves of Agriophyllum squarrosum can not absorb dew.
