Prevalence of Shiga Toxin–Producing Escherichia coli in Beef Cattle

BollingerAbstract:A large number of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) strains have caused major outbreaks and sporadic cases of human illnesses, including mild diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, hemorrhagic colitis, and the life-threatening hemolytic uremic syndrome. These illnesses have been traced to both O157 and non-O157 STEC. In a large number of STEC-associated outbreaks, the infections were attributed to consumption of ground Beef or other Beef products contaminated with Cattle feces. Thus, Beef Cattle are considered reservoirs of STEC and can pose significant health risks to humans. The global nature of the human food supply suggests that safety concerns with Beef will continue and the challenges facing the Beef industry will increase at the production and processing levels. To be prepared to address these concerns and challenges, it is critical to assess the role of Beef Cattle in human STEC infections. In this review, published reports on STEC in Beef Cattle were evaluated to achieve the following specific objectives: (i) assess the prevalence of STEC in Beef Cattle, and (ii) determine the potential health risks of STEC strains from Beef Cattle. The latter objective is critically important because many Beef STEC isolates are highly virulent. Global testing of Beef Cattle feces revealed wide ranges of prevalence rates for O157 STEC (i.e., 0.2 to 27.8%) and non-O157 STEC (i.e., 2.1 to 70.1%). Of the 261 STEC serotypes found in Beef Cattle, 44 cause hemolytic uremic syndrome and 37 cause other illnesses.

CONSTRAINTS OF BIOSECURITY ADOPTION ON Beef Cattle FARMS

The aim of this research was to know the level and constraints of biosecurity adoption by Beef Cattle farms in South Sulawesi. This research was conducted in 2017 in Luwu regency, South Sulawesi province. Total sample was 31 Beef Cattle farmers who were choosed through purposive sampling. Data on biosecurity adoption level included vaccination, sanitation and traffic arrangements. Data were obtained through observation and interview using questionnaire. There were 21 questions for the level of biosecurity adoption. If Beef Cattle farmers adopt biosecurity, the score was 1, on the other hand, if Beef Cattle farmers do not adopt biosecurity, the score was 0. To know the adoption barrier, Delphi method and Focus Discussion Group were used. Data were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the adoption level of Beef Cattle breeders was categorized as "high adopter". Factors inhibiting the application of biosecurity to Beef Cattle farmers sequenced from the highest percentage were shortage of extension workers, shortage of veterinarian, lack of technical knowledge of animal husbandry and lack of capital. The aim of this research was to know the social capital of Beef Cattle farmers in South Sulawesi. Population of this research was 31 Beef Cattle farmers. Variable of social capital was mutual trust, norms and linkage. The data were collected from observation and depth interview by using questionnaire. There were 10 questions which were adopted from Australian Center for International Agriculture Research. The answer was scored by using Likert scale ranging from 1 refer to strongly disagree; 2 refer to disagree; 3 refer to not sure; 4 refer to agree and 5 refer to strongly agree. The data were analyzed descriptively by using frequency distribution. The research revealed that the social capital of Beef Cattle farmers was categorized as "high".

This research is conducted in Luwu regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The data are collected from observation and interview using questionnaire. The sample is 31 Beef Cattle farmers who are selected using random sampling. There are 35 questions in the questionnaire that consist of management practice, sanitation, equipment, disease and disease prevention, and calf management. The data are analyzed descriptively using frequency distribution. The results revealed that the level of biosecurity adoption is 69.3%, and it is categorized as “high adopters”.

The purpose of this study was to identify and to control the behavior of Beef Cattle farmers towards biosecurity in Lamasi District - Luwu Region, South Sulawesi Province. This type of research was descriptive research. The research method was survey to participatory research and the Focus Group Discussion. Total sample was 50 respondents. Data were obtained through interview using questionnaires and observations. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistic. Likert scale 1 until 3 were used to know the response level of disagree and agree about biosecurity. The results showed that Beef Cattle farmers less agree to biosecurity adoption. Based on subjective norm, farmers’ behaviors agree to adopt biosecurity if they were supported by community leaders and other livestock farmers or farmer groups. Behavior control which becomes the main obstacles to implementing biosecurity are habits, prior implementation and risks. T he supporting factors needed time, can be tested on a small scale Cattle business, according to the needs of Cattle farmers, needed workers, needed knowledge, skills, and information about biosecurity . Beef Cattle farmers should be motivated to adopt biosecurity in order to get a healthy Beef Cattle.

china Cattle Science, 2012Co-Authors: Xin Ya-pingAbstract:【Objective】The status of Beef Cattle standardized breeding and raising,the formulation and implementation of relevant policies in Shaanxi Province were obtained.The recommendations of Beef Cattle standardized breeding and raising were put forward,whick would provide basis for formulating Beef Cattle breeding policy of the ministry of agriculture.【Method】The ways of actual exchange of visits and discussions,typical investigation and sampling survey combined were taken.【Result】Beef Cattle standardized farming land policy,corporate registration and Beef Cattle epidemic prevention certificate system,environmental policy and waste treatment system,government support policies,Beef Cattle insurance policies and agricultural subsidies were obtained.【Conclusion】Recommendations to promote the development of Beef standardization in Shaanxi province were put forward.
