Blanchard was a Pioneer, Leading Expert, Advocate, Mentor, and Sage. Bob Blanchard's work demonstrably changed our broad understanding of animal behavior, and led the way to experimental design and analysis for studies of animal behavior that helped to clarify the deep complexity and subtleties of behavior. Bob's impact on the field of Behavioral Neuroscience includes the behavior, neurocircuitry, neurochemistry, and pharmacology related to social interactions, aggressive behavior, defensive behaviors, flight, freezing, threat, attack, risk assessment, anxiety disorders, animal models, models of social behavior, and autism. The methods and designs developed by Bob Blanchard over a lifetime have been adopted by scientists around the world, and form a standard of excellence in the field. The article addresses these topics in a way that presents developments in the field, describes the newest research data, and pays tribute to a great scientist and founder of this field of work, Bob Blanchard.

Behavioral phenotyping assays for genetic mouse models of neurodevelopmental neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders

With rapidly evolving genetic engineering technologies, mutations identified in a human disorder can be generated in the mouse genome. Phenotypic outcomes of the mutation are then explicated to confirm hypotheses about causes and to discover effective therapeutics. Most neurodevelopmental, neurodegenerative, and psychiatric disorders are diagnosed primarily by their prominent Behavioral symptoms. Mouse Behavioral assays analogous to the human symptoms have been developed to analyze the consequences of mutations and to evaluate proposed therapeutics preclinically. Here we describe the range of mouse Behavioral tests available in the established Behavioral Neuroscience literature, along with examples of their translational applications. Well-characterized paradigms can be chosen from the established Behavioral Neuroscience literature. This review describes (1) a series of neurological and neuropsychological tests which are effectively used as a first screen for Behavioral abnormalities in mutant mice, and (2) a series of specific Behavioral paradigms, clustered by category. Included are multiple paradigms for each category, including learning and memory, feeding, analgesia, aggression, anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, and drug abuse models. Examples are given from the experiences of the authors, in applying these experimental designs to transgenic and knockout mice. Extensive references for each Behavioral paradigm are provided, to allow new investigators to access the relevant literature on Behavioral methodology.

In the 20 plus years since its founding, IBNS has become a hub for the dissemination of new research, development of important research collaborations, support and networking for young investigators, and for outreach and education to the community. This work is covered in part by offering special sessions during the meeting for late-breaking scientific discoveries from a range of disciplines as well as background and seniority level of the presenters. This special issue is a culmination of the late-breaking research presented at the IBNS 2014 meeting. The manuscripts of this Special Issue cover a variety of themes, including, stress, depression, the intersection of monoamine systems and behavior, substance use disorders, attentional processes, and awareness and acceptance of brain training. This wide range of topics and interest as well as range in seniority of presenters demonstrate the driving interest of IBNS in advancing knowledge in Behavioral Neuroscience as well as supporting scientists at every level.

The launch of this effort comes on the back of widespread acknowledgement that more is required to aid those suffering from mental health disorders. Specifically, a greater understanding of the neural circuitry related to behaviors specific to mental health disorders is needed. The field of research that relates the circuitry of the brain to specific aspects of behavior is referred to as Behavioral Neuroscience. The International Behavioral Neuroscience Society (IBNS) was founded in 1992 specifically to meet on an annual basis and present the latest research findings in this field, and to gather together the international research community to discuss issues important for the development and progress of this scientific discipline. This special issue includes reviews of topics of emerging interest and advancing knowledge in Behavioral Neuroscience, based on symposia presented at the 2014 IBNS meeting. Topics discussed at the annual IBNS meeting ranged from investigations of the neural mechanisms underlying bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, traumatic brain injury, and risk-taking behavior, to Behavioral consequences of obesity and immune dysfunction. Novel treatment areas are covered such as the use of deep brain stimulation, as well as investigation of the Behavioral impacts of nicotine withdrawal and how this research will influence the development of nicotine cessation treatments. Hence, this special issue covers a wide-range of topics in Behavioral Neuroscience offering an insight into the challenges faced by researchers in this decade of the brain.

evolutionary conservation translational relevance and cognitive function the future of zebrafish in Behavioral Neuroscience
Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews, 2020Co-Authors: Robert GerlaiAbstract:Abstract The zebrafish is becoming increasingly well utilized in several fields of biology, including Behavioral Neuroscience. This review, based upon an Outstanding Achievement Award lecture presented by the author at an IBNS conference, explores the potential reasons for the popularity of this species. First, some theoretical questions are discussed, including why a comparative approach using more than a single laboratory animal species (the mouse) may be important. Points about evolutionary conservation are considered. Discussion on why complexity may build over time, and what it means when a species is considered “primitive” vs “advanced”, are also included. Arguments about how using a “primitive” species may work to the researcher’s advantage are made in the context of translational relevance. Most discussions center around a complex functional aspect of the brain, relational learning and memory, and use empirical examples from the author’s own laboratory. It is hoped that these examples will show how a simple vertebrate, like the zebrafish, may help the investigator address fundamental mechanistic questions about complex brain function and behavior.

reproducibility and replicability in zebrafish Behavioral Neuroscience research
Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior, 2019Co-Authors: Robert GerlaiAbstract:Reproducibility and replicability are fundamentally important aspects of the scientific method. From time to time the discussion about whether scientific findings are replicable enough flares up. In fact, some recent publications claim we are witnessing a replication crisis. This is a particularly important problem in laboratory organisms that are relatively new, i.e., for which only limited amount of information is available, and for which only a limited number of methods have been developed. The zebrafish is a relative newcomer in Behavioral Neuroscience. This review considers four distinct reasons as possibly underlying reproducibility issues in Behavioral Neuroscience studies using the zebrafish. One, publication bias for positive results. Two, statistical issues that surround the question of how to address type 1 and type 2 errors, and how to make statistical inference. Three, inappropriate control of factors that are known to potentially influence results. And four, methodological issues stemming from insufficient understanding of factors that may influence experimental results. The review will mainly focus on experimental issues and solutions, i.e. the latter two reasons listed above. It is not intended to be comprehensive, and its examples are drawn mainly from the author's own studies and experience with zebrafish. Nevertheless, most issues discussed are not unique to his laboratory, to the zebrafish, or even to Behavioral Neuroscience.
