Hypothesis We identified the results of treatment associated with pathologic fracture of proximal femur in children. Material and Method We retrospectively reviewed 56 patients who had fracture associated with Benign Bone femur between May 25th, 1995 and Jan. 14th, 2012. The patients’ mean age was 11.7(2–20) years old and follow-up duration was 55.3(5–132) months. Results Fifty-six children with pathologic proximal femur fracture due to Benign Tumor were treated by various methods. Surgery consisted with combination of curettage, graft and internal fixation. We had 13(23%) complication. 6(11%) of them was related with fracture and 7(12%) of them was related with Tumor. In six, malunion and shortening due to varus deformity developed after follow-up. In seven, recurrence was treated by curettage and internal fixation. There is no case of nonunion. Discussion and Conclusion To manage the osteoporotic fracture of proximal femur in children, a thorough understanding of the risks associated with it is essential for decision making of increasing successful results.

the usefulness of calcium sulfate in treatment of Benign Bone Tumor
The Journal of The Korean Orthopaedic Association, 2007Co-Authors: Sung Taek Jung, Myung Sun Kim, Kwang Cheul JeongAbstract:Purpose: This study evaluated the results of the curettage and grafting of calcium sulfate for the treatment of a Benign Bone Tumor to determine its efficacy as a Bone graft substitute. Materials and Methods: Thirty six cases of calcium sulfate(OsteosetⓇ) grafting for Bone defect after curettage of Benign Bone Tumor were evaluated. There were 21 males and 15 females with a mean age of 23 years (6-64). There were 23, 10 and 3 cases grafted with the Osteoset only, the Osteoset with allografts and the Osteoset with autografts, respectively. The average follow up duration was 19 months (12-49). The process of Bone formation was observed and the times for graft absorption and complete Bone formation were assessed. In addition, the time of Bone formation was compared according to the patients' age, size of lesion, and grafting method, and the development of complications was observed. Results: Complete Bone formation was observed in 34 (94.4%) out of 36 cases. The groups of younger patients, smaller size of lesion and grafting of OsteosetⓇ only showed more rapid Bone formation. However, there was no statistical significance. There was one case of soft tissue calcification observed. Conclusion: Calcium sulfate is an effective substitute for an autogenous Bone graft in the case of the treatment of a Benign Bone Tumor, particularly in the case of an insufficient graft, such as in children and in those with a large Bone defect. This method is a safe method that prevents complications in the donor site.

Pathologic Fracture of Proximal Femur with Benign Bone Tumor

Materials and Methods : Nineteen patients (23 cases) who had been treated for proximal femur pathologic fracture from 1987 to 2002 were enrolled in this study. The mean follow-up duration was 40 months. The causes and treatments of the pathologic fractures and complications such as nonunion, deformity and recurrence were evaluated. Results : The Benign Bone lesions treated were fibrous dysplasia (15), simple Bone cyst (3), aneurysmal Bone cyst (2), giant cell Tumor (2) and eosinophilic granuloma (1). An autograft (3), allograft (2), and both autograft and allograft (3) was performed after adjuvant curettage with a high-speed burr. There was no recurrence in these 8 cases. At the final course, internal fixation was performed in 18 cases (intramedullary nail (10), compressive hip screw (6), plate (1), screw (1)), a hip spica cast 3 cases and a THR 2 cases. Three cases where a hip spica cast had been performed showed a varus deformity. A refracture and deformity were prevented in 10 cases who underwent intramedullary nailing. Conclusion : The IM nail is very effective in preventing complications such as a deformity, refracture after a treatment for polyostotic fibrous dysplasia. However, in a solitary Benign Bone lesion, Bone graft and internal fixation is effective after thorough curettage.

Desmoplastic fibroma of the cranium: case report and review of the literature.

Lee, Neil DuggalAbstract:OBIECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Desmoplastic fibroma is a Benign Bone Tumor that can be locally aggressive. it usually occurs in the long Bones and mandible. We report on a patient with a desmoplastic fibroma arising in the temporal Bone and review previously published cases of desmoplastic fibroma originating within the cranium. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 43-year-oid woman presented with a 12 year history of progressively worsening head asymmetry . Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography demonstrated a mass Originating from the Bone and involving the adjacent soft tissues. INTERVENTION: A temporal parietal cranietomy was performed with excision of a large Tumor involving the Bone. An acrylic cranioplasty. was used to replace the Bone. Pathological examination of the lesion identified desmoplastic fibroma of the cranium After surgery, the patient's cranial asymmetry was corrected. CONCLUSION: Desmoplastic fibroma of the cranium is rare. Surgical resection is the treatment of choice.

Osteoblastoma Is a Metabolically Active Benign Bone Tumor on 18F-FDG PET Imaging

AlqudahAbstract:We describe a case of a 9-y-old girl who on 18F-FDG PET im-aging was found to have a highly metabolically active sacral Tumor with an average standarized uptake value of 6.2. The Tumor was proven to be osteoblastoma by pathologic examina-tion. Osteoblastoma is a relatively rare Benign primary Bone Tumor and occurs predominantly in patients younger than 20 y. The most common area of involvement is the spine. Osteoblas-toma has been reported to be metabolically active on 18F-FDG PET imaging, with an average standarized uptake value of 3.2, which renders 18F-FDG PET imaging unable to differentiate be-nign from malignant primary Bone Tumors. To our knowledge, only 5 cases of osteoblastoma evaluated by 18F-FDG PET im-aging have been reported in the literature; all were metabolically active on 18F-FDG PET imaging. The objective of this case re-port is to show that a metabolically active primary Bone Tumor on 18F-FDG PET imaging might be Benign and not necessarily malignant.
