These data are discussed in relation to the control of knot size, log diameter and taper. To provide a field guide to cambial reactivation, progress of vessel production has been related to stages of leaf expansion.

Genetic transformation of silver birch (Betula pendula) by particle bombardment
Tree physiology, 2000Co-Authors: Maarit Valjakka, Tuija Aronen, Jaakko Kangasjärvi, Elina Vapaavuori, Hely HäggmanAbstract:We used in vitro callus and shoot cultures as target material for genetic transformation of silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) by particle bombardment. Cultivation of in vitro shoot cultures before particle bombardment and a long selection period, combined with a high concentration of selective agent after bombardment, led to the production of transformed plantlets that were stable, and no escapes were found among the tree lines produced. Clonal variation in transformation efficiency was found in transient expression of the beta-glucuronidase gene in callus cultures and in plantlets transformed by stable integration of the ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase small subunit (RbcS) and neomycin phosphotransferase (npt2) genes.

Qualitative Structural Changes during Bark Development in Quercus Robur, Ulmus Glabra, Populus Tremula and Betula pendula
IAWA Journal, 1991Co-Authors: M. TrockenbrodtAbstract:The development of bark structure of Quercus robur L., Ulmus glabra Huds., Populus tremula L. and Betula pendula Roth is being described. Profound structural changes can be observed during the first years after secondary growth has started. In all four species the epidermis is replaced by a periderm, the cortex shows intensive dilatation growth, and the groups of primary bark fibres are pushed apart. The collapse of sieve tube members starts with the second year. With proceeding secondary growth, the specific formation of sclerenchymatic tissue, especially sclereids, and the dilatation growth are processes which strongly affect the bark structure of Quercus robur, Populus tremula and Betula pendula. In addition, wide, fused phloem rays develop in Quercus robur. The structure of Ulmus glabra bark is affected by the formation of phloem fibre-/sclereid-like cells and mucilage cells and by dilatation growth. The histological pattern of Ulmus glabra bark stabilises to a great extent after the first few years, the other barks investigated show further developmental processes over many years. In all species the formation of a rhytidome is the last distinct modification of bark structure.
