arXiv: Digital Libraries, 2020Co-Authors: Martijn S Visser, Nees Jan Van Eck, Ludo WaltmanAbstract:We present a large-scale comparison of five multidisciplinary Bibliographic Data sources: Scopus, Web of Science, Dimensions, Crossref, and Microsoft Academic. The comparison considers all scientific documents from the period 2008-2017 covered by these Data sources. Scopus is compared in a pairwise manner with each of the other Data sources. We first analyze differences between the Data sources in the coverage of documents, focusing for instance on differences over time, differences per document type, and differences per discipline. We then study differences in the completeness and accuracy of citation links. Based on our analysis, we discuss strengths and weaknesses of the different Data sources. We emphasize the importance of combining a comprehensive coverage of the scientific literature with a flexible set of filters for making selections of the literature.

In this paper, the problem of integrating existing public Bibliographic Databases and structured Databases which reside at different locations in the network is addressed. Although Bibliographic Data is semistructured, its attribute set is often determined by an international standard known as MARC. To unify Bibliographic and structured Data, the well-known SQL was extended to model Bibliographic related attributes and queries. In particular, a new Data type was added to model attributes in the Bibliographic Database. Specialized functions have also been designed that can be used to formulate queries on Bibliographic Data, as well as queries on both Bibliographic and structured Data. By combining the SQL extensions with other query language extensions that access general text Data, it is believed that a versatile query language layer can be made available for future digital library application development.

Ten challenges in modeling Bibliographic Data for bibliometric analysis

In this complex scenario, one of the most crucial issues is the quality of Data and the capability of bibliometric analysis to cope with multiple Data dimensions. Although the problem of enforcing a multidimensional approach to the analysis and management of Bibliographic Data is not new, a reference design pattern and a specific conceptual model for multidimensional analysis of Bibliographic Data are still missing. In this paper, we discuss ten of the most relevant challenges for bibliometric analysis when dealing with multidimensional Data, and we propose a reference Data model that, according to different goals, can help analysis designers and Bibliographic experts in working with large collections of Bibliographic Data.

Accuracy of author names in Bibliographic Data sources: an Italian case study
Scientometrics, 2018Co-Authors: Camil Demetrescu, Andrea Ribichini, Marco SchaerfAbstract:We investigate the accuracy of how author names are reported in Bibliographic records excerpted from four prominent sources: WoS , Scopus , PubMed , and CrossRef . We take as a case study 44,549 publications stored in the internal Database of Sapienza University of Rome, one of the largest universities in Europe. While our results indicate generally good accuracy for all Bibliographic Data sources considered, we highlight a number of issues that undermine the accuracy for certain classes of author names, including compound names and names with diacritics, which are common features to Italian and other Western languages.
