Information Retrieval in Food Science Research: A Bibliographic Database Analysis.

PennerAbstract:The aim of the present research was to ascertain the importance of electronic Bibliographic Database selection and multiple Database usage during the information retrieval phase of research in the food sciences. Six commonly recommended Databases were compared with respect to overall journal coverage and journal overlap. Databases were also evaluated with respect to coverage of food science-based journals and the extent of article coverage therein. A case study approach, focused on bile acid/dietary fiber interactions, was used to illustrate the ramifications of Database selection/usage when dealing with specific research topics. Databases differed with respect to the breadth of disciplines covered, the total number of journals indexed, the number of food science discipline-specific journals indexed, and the number of articles included per indexed journal. All of the Databases contained citations that were unique to the given Database. The data resulting from the case study provide an example of the extent to which relevant information may be missed if pertinent Databases are not mined. In the present case, over half of the articles retrieved on the focus research topic were unique to a single Database. The combined data from this study point to the importance of thoughtful Database selection and multiple Database usage when comprehensively assessing knowledge in the food sciences. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This paper provides insights into article Database usage for food science-relevant information retrieval. Online information retrieval is an efficient way to assess current knowledge in any of the food science disciplines. Acquired knowledge in turn is the underpinning of effective problem solving; whether it be private sector- or academic/government-based research.; © 2018 Institute of Food Technologists®.

Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology, 1999Co-Authors: Richard P Smiraglia, Gregory H LeazerAbstract:To contribute to the development of a sophisticated control of Bibliographic works research must build on the growing understanding of the nature of the work and the constitution of Bibliographic families. The present study was designed to address the following in the context of a global Bibliographic Database: the OCLC Online Computer Library Center's WorldCat: the proportion of works that are members of Bibliographic families; the size of each family; Bibliographic characteristics that can be associated with the existence or extent of derivative Bibliographic relationships; the frequency with which each type of relationship appears; and the complexity of Bibliographic families. A sample of Bibliographic families was constructed. Results indicate that a core of works of similar character constitute the Bibliographic population of American academic and research libraries (OCLC members). It seems that the canon of derivative works is greater in the academic sphere than in the Bibliographic universe represented by OCLC at large. The size of a Bibliographic family seems to be related to its popularity or its canonicity. Discipline, form, and genre all fail to demonstrate any influence on derivation of works. Further study of specific segments of the Bibliographic universe, for instance the literature of particular disciplines, is clearly called for. The purpose of this research is to contribute to the development of a sophisticated control of Bibliographic works and families. In particular, this research is designed to build on our growing understanding of the nature of the work and the constitution of Bibliographic families.

building a thailand researcher network based on a Bibliographic Database
ACM IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries, 2009Co-Authors: Choochart Haruechaiyasak, Alisa Kongthon, Santipong ThaiprayoonAbstract:Among many practical and domain-specific tasks, expertise retrieval (ER) has recently gained increasing attention in the information retrieval and knowledge management communities. This paper describes our ongoing project to design and implement an expert retrieval system with the scope on researchers who work in Thailand. In our current system prototype, we assume that the areas of expertise among researchers can be extracted from Bibliographic Databases. We use the Science Citation Index (SCI) Database to provide the information for representing the expert profiles. From the SCI Database, we queried and retrieved publications covering from the year 2001 to 2008 by specifying the affiliation equal to "Thailand". The results contain a set of approximately 23,000 publications. We downloaded and extracted four related fields including authors (denoted by AU), controlled terms (denoted by ID), keywords (denoted by DE) and subject category (denoted by SC). To build a researcher network, we consider two types of relationships: direct and indirect. The direct (or social) relationship is defined as the co-authoring degree between one researcher to others. The co-authoring degree between two researchers, co-authoring(A,B), can be calculated based on the co-occurrence frequency between A and B found in the field AU of 23,000 retrieved records. The indirect (or topical relationship is defined when two researchers have publications under the same topics. The topical degree between two researchers, topical(A,B), can be calculated based on the similarity measure between two sets of extracted keywords, keyword(A) and keyword(B), representing researcher A and B, respectively. The keyword set can be extracted from the fields ID, DE and SC. An author with high frequencies on particular keywords is considered an expert in the corresponding research topics.

Paleolithic Rock Art: A Worldwide Literature Survey Extracted from the Rock Art Studies Bibliographic Database for the Years 1864–2017
Arts, 2018Co-Authors: Leigh MarymorAbstract:The Rock Art Studies Bibliographic Database is an open access; online resource that fulfills the need for a searchable portal into the world’s rock art literature. Geared to the broadest interests of rock art researchers; students; cultural resource managers; and the general public; the RAS Database makes rock art literature accessible through a simple search interface that facilitates inquiries into multiple data fields; including authors’ names; title and publication; place-name keyword; subject keyword; ISBN/ISSN number and abstract. The results of a data search can further be sorted by any of the data fields; including: authors’ names; date; title; and so forth. An ever increasing number of citations within the Database include web links to online versions of the reference cited; and many citations include full author’s abstracts. The data compilation has been undertaken by Leigh Marymor with the year 2018 marking the 25th year of continuous revision and expansion of the data. Over 37,000 citations are currently contained in the Database. The RAS Database first launched online as a joint project of the Bay Area Rock Art Research Association and University of California’s Bancroft Library. After thirteen years of collaboration; the project found a new home and collaborator at the Anthropology Department at the Museum of Northern Arizona. The Paleolithic Rock Art bibliography results from an export of data from the RAS Database and captures a freeze-frame in the state of the rock art literature for the world’s Paleolithic rock art as compiled here in the year 2018. The online version of the RAS Bibliographic Database at the Museum of Northern Arizona is updated annually; and we refer the reader to that resource for up-to-date Bibliographic data revisions and additions. Researchers who consult the online Database in concert with their reference to the Paleolithic Rock Art bibliography will discover a powerful ally in further refining geographic and thematic inquiries.
