    This paper describes the history and role of the UNIMARC Bibliographic data formats, as background to a discussion of preliminary outcomes of a project to represent the formats in Resource Description Framework (RDF) and map them to related standards, including the International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD). These include the testing of the strategy for namespace and URI design and the methodology for populating them with content, identification of alignment inconsistencies, and preliminary mappings to Dublin Core, RDA: resource Description and access, and MARC 21. The paper discusses the relevance of these standards to the aims of Universal Bibliographic Control (UBC) and user-focused applications in the Semantic Web.

    Abstract:

    This article explores the question “What is an International Standard for Bibliographic Description (ISBD) resource in the context of the Semantic Web, and what is the relationship of its Description to the linked data?” This question is discussed against the background of the dichotomy between the Description and access using the Semantic Web differentiation of the three logical layers: real-world objects, web of data, and special purpose (Bibliographic) data. The representation of Bibliographic data as linked data is discussed, distinguishing the Description of a resource from the iconic/objective and the informational/subjective viewpoints. In the conclusion, the authors give views on possible directions of future development of the ISBD.

    This paper discusses various examples of selection, Bibliographic Description of electronic resources, and how the mediation provided by librarians can help users with their choices during searching. Users are confronted with more information than ever before, and their expectations are becoming increasingly diverse. This article presents several observations gathered from public libraries and considers the conditions of access and Description to electronic resources in various French libraries. Finally added value in authority records is discussed, with particular reference to URLs.

    Abstract:

    I'll focus my observations on public libraries and I'll talk about the situation of the access to electronic documents in French libraries. I'll base my speech also upon the remarks about this topic found in professional literature, including that published in France. How can selection, Bibliographic Description of electronic resources and mediation of librarians reduce users' frustration? It is a fact that the best search engines cover only a third of the Web, the remaining stays invisible and hidden in databases. In this way, librarians are more and more useful for selecting, classifying and providing information.

    ABSTRACT The Cite des Sciences et de l'Industrie in Paris-the interactive museum for science and technology which opened to the public in 1986 hosts a multimedia library holding some 330,000 documents. The small collection of CD-ROMs integrated into the library's collection since the end of 1991 (“Public section” and the “Didactheque”) have been expanded in October 1996. Presently more than 800 titles are available for viewing on site or for circulation. After the brief background of CD-ROM installation and collections in French public libraries this paper discusses the problems of describing CD-ROMs in the online catalog. It mostly concentrates on the collection for circulation. The rules of Bibliographic Description correspond to the draft of the French national standard, which follows the ISBD(ER) principles. The format used for cataloguing in the library is UNIMARC and the automated system-GEAC GLIS.     Presents an outline of post‐Soviet Lithuanian attempts to bring national standards of Bibliographic practice into line with those of the international community. Perceives international Bibliographic standards as the tools of international integration of library and information work. UNIMARC is one of the first to be implemented in Lithuanian libraries and is used as a national and inner format. It is closely linked to the international standard Bibliographic Description. The Centre of Bibliography and Book research is working on the translation of ISBDs. Together with the Paris principles and UNIMARC/Authoritiesthey will serve as a basis for Lithuanian national cataloguing rules. Universal decimal classification is used in subject cataloguing in Lithuanian libraries. International standard publication numbers (ISSN, ISBN, ISMN) are mandatory elements of the catalogue records in computerized library stystems.
