Late Antique Archaeology, 2008Co-Authors: Nathalie KellensAbstract:Research into metal technology in Late Antiquity has arguably been neglected. Recent interest in late antique metal technology has not led to an even coverage of all geographical regions and chronological periods. Scientific analyses of metal finds and related (waste) products have resulted in a wide range of geological, geochemical and geophysical observations, related to mining provenance and production/working processes. General processes and techniques in copper, bronze and brass working were practised throughout Antiquity, such as hammering, casting, embossing, chasing, engraving, inlaying, enamelling and gilding. On a general level, the studies of Boulaika and Hofmann, although over 30 years old, offer a superb overview of the provenance, use and technology of lead and its alloys in Antiquity. Archaeological remains and structures deriving from smelting and metalworking are poorly preserved and often neglected, or simply not recognised by field archaeologists. Late Antique Archaeology, 2008Co-Authors: Veerle LauwersAbstract:Studies of late antique glass tend to fall into two groups: those which concentrate on the geochemical component; and typological/chronological works. Antikes Glas describes the evolution of glass technology and typology, giving the reader a clear idea of how mankind learned to handle this vitreous material. During the last 15 years, the late antique period has attracted much attention within glass studies. Re-cycling was most probably based on the re-melting of the waste produced by the glass workshop itself, hence the small quantity of moils and knock-off that tend to be found, and the distinctive geochemical data that have been gathered. Bearing in mind that there is evidence for the existence of such trade, there must have been a demand for glass sherds (especially in Late Antiquity and the Early Medieval period). SSRN Electronic Journal, 2012Co-Authors: Stephen PiersonAbstract:The “Bibliographic Note and Bibliography on Bakhtinian Studies in Poetry” contains a brief Bibliographical Note on the subject matter, followed by a bibliography with more than 160 entries. The Note describes the content of the Bibliography, the consensus in the scholarship on Bakhtin’s theory of poetry, and my reconsideration of that agreement in my dissertation: "A Bakhtinian Reading of a Selection of Poems by Holderlin and Whitman” (Purdue University 2010; DAI-A 72/03). The relationship between my Bibliography and the Analytical Database of the Bakhtin Centre is also sketched. The Bibliography, the largest of its kind, should be an invaluable resource for scholars.

Gender and behaviour, 2010Co-Authors: Ismail BalaAbstract:Many critics have decried what is often called “the zero presence” of the female voice in Nigerian poetry: Nigerian female writers trail behind their male counterparts for a number of reasons (literary, historical and cultural). This is more pronounced if not more acute in Northern Nigeria, where literature of English expression is slow in evolving, compared to other parts of the country. Poetry of English expression by women from Northern Nigeria is indeed young, and is written in a tradition that is not only new but developing. This paper is a preliminary bibliography of the few collections of poetry in English (or English translation) by women from Northern Nigeria.
