Prioritisation of existing Biocidal active substances in the European Union
Environmental Science & Policy, 2003Co-Authors: Dag Kappes, Kirsten RasmussenAbstract:Abstract This article describes the priority setting process in the 10-year review programme for the systematic examination of all existing active Biocidal substances as foreseen in Article 16(2) of the European Commission Biocidal Products Directive (BPD). In the first phase of this programme, all existing Biocidal substances were identified or notified. For the evaluation in the second phase, the notified substances will be grouped in four priority lists according to the product types (PTs) for which they were notified. The prioritisation principles were the availability of test guidance for efficacy testing, overlap with other review programmes and overlap between the substances in different product types. The details of these principles are explained in this article.

This article presents an analysis of the notified substances regarding the number of notifications per substance, notifiers per substance and per Member State and number of notified substances per product type. The results are compared with data from former statistics.

Durable and chlorine rechargeable Biocidal composite material for improved food safety

The development of materials with chlorine refreshable Biocidal functions, which could be integrated with many current food processing procedures, are necessary for food contact surfaces, such as conveyor belts and food packages. Taking the advantages of Biocidal activity and serviceability of a previously developed durable and regenerable Biocidal antimicrobial cellulose fabric (DMH-g-Cotton fabric), we demonstrated a scalable strategy for fabrication of a chlorine rechargeable antimicrobial composite material consisting of the DMH-g-Cotton, serving as a reinforcement component and a reservoir of active chlorine, and an amine-halamine polymer (2,4-diamino-6-diallylamino-1,3,5-triazine) grafted poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene, PVA-co-PE-g-DAM) as a coating component. The as-prepared halamine composite fabric (HCF) exhibited the integrated properties of a high content of active chlorine, ease of rechargeability, rapid Biocidal efficacy even at high chemical oxygen demand condition, reduced cross-contamination risk, and desired mechanical properties. The halamine cellulose fabric played an important role to serve as a reinforcement material and active chlorine reservoir for the composite. Additionally, the incorporation of HCFs as a Biocidal food pad was demonstrated to achieve the prolonged shelf life of prepackaged strawberries. Graphic abstract

DURABLE AND RECHARGEABLE Biocidal TEXTILES
Medical Textiles and Biomaterials for Healthcare, 2006Co-Authors: Gang SunAbstract:ABSTRACT Textile materials, including natural and synthetic fibers, are good media for growth of microorganisms, particularly the drug-resistant bacteria, which have caused great concern to public health. Biocidal properties should be a necessary feature for medical-use textiles. Biocidal functions, different from biostatic functions, include sterilization, disinfection, and sanitization in an order of the strength. According to guidelines from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), medical use Biocidal functions should be at least at the disinfection level, which can inactivate most infectious microorganisms. In addition, Biocidal functions on textile materials should survive repeated laundering if used as uniforms, linens and even reusable surgical scraps and gowns. Among the currently investigated antimicrobial materials, only N-halamines have shown the capability of providing fast and total kill against a wide range of microorganisms without causing resistance from microorganisms. Furthermore, halamine structures can be recharged by chlorine bleaching, a process recommended by CD as well. Thus, Biocidal textiles containing the halamine structures have been developed. Recent studies in Biocidal polymers have resulted interesting progresses in incorporating halamines to all synthetic fabrics that are widely used as medical and other professional clothing materials. Chemistry and properties of the new processes have been discussed in this presentation.

Chemistry of Durable and Regenerable Biocidal Textiles

Dave WorleyAbstract:Unlike the widely used slow-releasing Biocidal mechanism now employed in Biocidal textiles, a novel regenerable process, based on a regeneration principle and halamine chemistry, has been developed in antimicrobial finishing of textiles. Halamine-modified textile materials demonstrate durable and regenerable antimicrobial functions and execute rapid inactivation of a broad spectrum of microorganisms by contact without yielding drug resistance. The unique properties of the products render them useful materials for medical-use and hygienic textiles. The chemistry of the Biocidal materials is be discussed.

Durable and regenerable antimicrobial textiles: Improving efficacy and durability of Biocidal functions
Journal of Applied Polymer Science, 2003Co-Authors: Lei Qian, Gang SunAbstract:2,2,5,5-Tetramethylimidazolidinone (TMIO)-modified cotton-containing fabrics could provide excellent durable antimicrobial properties, but the Biocidal speeds were low because of its amine halamine structures. To prepare Biocidal fabrics that can inactivate microorganisms rapidly and survive repeated laundering and long duration of storage, 3-methylol-2,2,5,5-tetramethylimidazolidinone and dimethylol-5,5-dimethylhydantoin were combined in different ratios in chemical modifications of cellulose fabrics. The mixtures of TMIO and hydantoin rings on the grafted cellulose provided a hybrid of imide, amide, and amine halamine structures in different ratios after chlorination, and led to varied efficacy and durability of Biocidal properties on the finished fabrics. Photocatalytic Antibacterial Capabilities of TiO2−Biocidal Polymer Nanocomposites Synthesized by a Surface-Initiated Photopolymerization

Vinyl monomer mixtures of nontoxic secondary amine-containing Biocidal 2-(tert-butylamino)ethyl methacrylate and antifouling ethylene glycol dimethacrylate were used for the antimicrobial polymer shell. It was shown that the synthesized TiO2/poly[2-(tert-butylamino)ethyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate] core/shell nanoparticles had enhanced photocatalytic antibacterial properties compared to the pristine TiO2 nanoparticles due to the combined antibacterial activities of light-driven anti-infective TiO2 core and Biocidal polymer shell. In the dark condition, the TiO2/Biocidal polymer nanoparticles exhibited high antimicrobial efficiency (95.7%) against gram-positive S. aureus.
