lactose intolerance in adults Biological Mechanism and dietary management
Nutrients, 2015Co-Authors: Yanyong Deng, Benjamin MisselwitzAbstract:Lactose intolerance related to primary or secondary lactase deficiency is characterized by abdominal pain and distension, borborygmi, flatus, and diarrhea induced by lactose in dairy products. The Biological Mechanism and lactose malabsorption is established and several investigations are available, including genetic, endoscopic and physiological tests. Lactose intolerance depends not only on the expression of lactase but also on the dose of lactose, intestinal flora, gastrointestinal motility, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and sensitivity of the gastrointestinal tract to the generation of gas and other fermentation products of lactose digestion. Treatment of lactose intolerance can include lactose-reduced diet and enzyme replacement. This is effective if symptoms are only related to dairy products; however, lactose intolerance can be part of a wider intolerance to variably absorbed, fermentable oligo-, di-, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAPs). This is present in at least half of patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and this group requires not only restriction of lactose intake but also a low FODMAP diet to improve gastrointestinal complaints. The long-term effects of a dairy-free, low FODMAPs diet on nutritional health and the fecal microbiome are not well defined. This review summarizes recent advances in our understanding of the genetic basis, Biological Mechanism, diagnosis and dietary management of lactose intolerance.

retraction the Biological Mechanism involved in anticancer properties of amniotic membrane
Oncology Reviews, 2020Co-Authors: Camillo PortaAbstract:To our readers: With deep regrets, we inform our Readers that the article The Biological Mechanism involved in anticancer properties of amniotic membrane (DOI: https://doi.org/10.4081/oncol.2020.429), which has been published in the current issue of Oncology Reviews (2020-1), contains verbatim text plagiarized from another paper.1 The manuscript must be considered as retracted. On behalf of the Editorial Board of Oncology Reviews, I apologize to the Author of the manuscript whose text was plagiarized by Ameneh Jafari, Hassan Niknejad, Mostafa Rezaei-Tavirani, Hakimeh Zali that this was not picked up in the peer review process. I also apologize to the affected journal for the violation of copyright due to plagiarism. Unfortunately we were not able to detect it before publication due to the language of the original paper (Slovenian). Oncology Reviews is uncompromising in its commitment to scientific integrity. When credible evidence of misconduct is brought to our attention, our commitment to the scientific record and to our readership requires immediate notification. Oncology Reviews is increasingly employing sophisticated software to detect plagiarism. Other journals use similar tools. Authors should be aware that most journals routinely employ plagiarism detection software, and that any plagiarism is likely to be detected. the insulin like growth factor axis a Biological Mechanism linking physical activity to colorectal cancer survival
Cancer Epidemiology, 2014Co-Authors: Andrew T Sax, David G Jenkins, James L Devin, Gareth I Hughes, Kate A Bolam, Tina L SkinnerAbstract:Physical activity (PA) is related to colorectal cancer (CRC) mortality, with approximately 15% of CRC deaths worldwide attributable to physical inactivity. Moreover, higher levels of PA in CRC survivors have been associated with a reduced risk of the disease recurring. Despite the recognised nexus between PA and the risk of CRC, the physiological Mechanisms underlying the inverse relationship between PA and mortality following CRC diagnosis are less apparent, with evidence primarily drawn from epidemiological studies. The insulin-like growth factor (IGF) axis plays a central role in cellular growth, proliferation regulation, differentiation and apoptosis. Specifically, high levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) have been consistently linked to the severity of CRC tumours. Further, insulin-like growth factor binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3) regulates the bioavailability of IGF-I and therefore plays a central role in CRC prognosis. Decreasing levels of IGF-1 and increasing levels of IGFBP-3 may thus be a plausible Mechanism underlying the inverse association between PA and CRC survival.

trypanosoma cruzi activities of lapachol and α and β lapachone derivatives against epimastigote and trypomastigote forms
Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry, 2008Co-Authors: Cristian O Salas, Ricardo A Tapia, Karina Ciudad, Veronica Armstrong, Myriam Orellana, Ulrike Kemmerling, Jorge Ferreira, Juan Diego Maya, Antonio MorelloAbstract:Abstract Derivatives of natural quinones with Biological activities, such as lapachol, α- and β-lapachones, have been synthesized and their trypanocidal activity evaluated in vitro in Trypanosoma cruzi cells. All tested compounds inhibited epimastigote growth and trypomastigote viability. Several compounds showed similar or higher activity as compared with current trypanocidal drugs, nifurtimox and benznidazole. The results presented here show that the anti- T. cruzi activity of the α-lapachone derivatives can be increased by the replacement of the benzene ring by a pyridine moiety. Free radical production and consequently oxidative stress through redox cycling or production of electrophilic metabolites are the potential Biological Mechanism of action for these synthetic quinones.
