the in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the essential oil and methanol extracts of achillea biebersteini afan asteraceae
Phytotherapy Research, 2004Co-Authors: Munevver Sokmen, Ferda Candan, Askin H AkpulatAbstract:The essential oil and methanol extracts from A. biebersteinii Afan. (Asteraceae) were evaluated for their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities in vitro. The oil showed stronger antimicrobial activity than the extracts. Their antioxidant features were also evaluated using diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), inhibition of superoxide and hydroxyl radicals and inhibition of the lipid peroxidation assays. Particularly, polar subfraction of the methanol extract showed antioxidant activity. The GC-MS analysis of the oil has resulted in the identification of 23 components; piperitone, eucalyptol, camphor, chrysanthenone and Borneol were the main components. Antimicrobial activity tests carried out with the fractions of the oil showed that the activity was mainly observed in those containing eucalyptol and camphor, in particular, followed by Borneol and piperitone.

determination of camphor and Borneol in traditional chinese medicines by microwave assisted extraction and gas chromatography with flame ionization detector
Analytical Letters, 2008Co-Authors: Chunhui DengAbstract:Abstract In this work, microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) followed by gas chromatography with flame ionization detector (GC–FID) was developed for the rapid determination of camphor and Borneol in three traditional Chinese medicines (TCM): Chrysanthemi indici, Flos Chrysanthemi indici and Amomum villosum lour. The optimal MAE conditions obtained were: acetone for solvent, with solvent having sample ratio of 12:1 (v/w); microwave power of 380 W, and an irradiation time of 4 min. Method validations were also studied. To demonstrate the proposed method, ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) and steam distillation (SD), followed by GC-FID, were used to analyze camphor and Borneol in thethree TCMs. The close results were obtained by the three methods. The results showed that the proposed MAE–GC–FID is a simple, rapid, and reliable method for quantitative analysis of camphor and Borneol in TCM, and is also a potential tool for TCM quality assessment.

gas chromatography mass spectrometry following pressurized hot water extraction and solid phase microextraction for quantification of eucalyptol camphor and Borneol in chrysanthemum flowers
Journal of Separation Science, 2007Co-Authors: Ling Dong, Jiyao Wang, Chunhui Deng, Xizhong ShenAbstract:Chrysanthemum flower is a common traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In this work, pressurized hot water extraction (PHWE) followed by headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and GC-MS was developed for the determination of three main active volatile compounds of eucalyptol, camphor, and Borneol in Chrysanthemum flowers from four different growing areas in China by internal standard method. The parameters of PHWE and HS-SPME were optimized. The method was also validated. The results showed that PHWE-SPME-GC-MS is a simple, rapid, efficient, and solvent-free technique for the quantitative determination of eucalyptol, camphor, and Borneol in TCMs and is potentially useful for the TCM quality assessment.

development of microwave assisted extraction followed by headspace solid phase microextraction and gas chromatography mass spectrometry for quantification of camphor and Borneol in flos chrysanthemi indici
Analytica Chimica Acta, 2006Co-Authors: Chunhui Deng, Yu Mao, Ning Yao, Xiangmin ZhangAbstract:In the work, microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) followed by headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was developed for quantitative analysis of the bioactive components of camphor and Borneol in a traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) of Flos Chrysanthemi Indici. After systematical investigation, the optimal experimental parameters microwave power (400 W), irradiation time (4min), fiber coating (PDMS/DVB fiber), extraction temperature (40 degrees C), extraction time (20 min), stirring rate (1100 rpm), and salt effect (no salt added) were investigated. The optimized method provided satisfactory precision (RSD values less than 12%), good recovery (from 86% to 94%), and good linearity (R2>0.999). The proposed method was applied to quantitative analysis of camphor and Borneol in Flos Chrysanthemi Indici samples from 11 different growing areas. To demonstrate the method feasibility, steam distillation was also used to analyze camphor and Borneol in Flos Chrysanthemi Indici samples from these different growing areas. The very close results were obtained by the two methods. It has been shown that the proposed ME-HS-SPME-GC-MS is a simple, rapid, solvent-free and reliable method for quantitative analysis of camphor and Borneol in TCM, and a potential tool for quality assessment of Flos Chrysanthemi Indici.

Design, characterization and comparison of transdermal delivery of colchicine via Borneol-chemically-modified and Borneol-physically-modified ethosome
Taylor & Francis Group, 2019Co-Authors: Yujia Zhang, Hui Song, Nan Zhang, Jin Wen, Xiaochuan Tan, Wensheng ZhengAbstract:Gout is a kind of joint disease characterized by the accumulation of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals in the joint and its surrounding tissue, causing persistent hyperuricemia. Colchicine is the first choice of treatment for acute gout attacks. Due to strong toxicity of colchicines oral tablets, there are high fluctuations of blood drug concentration and serious irritation of gastrointestinal tract, and hence a transdermal preparation can help to slow down the blood drug concentration, reduce the frequency of drug taking, and improve the patients' compliance of the drug. The ethosome is a lipid carrier with high concentration of ethanol and has been proved to promote the penetration of drugs into the skin. Borneol (BO) is an excellent penetration enhancer in Chinese medicine, which can promote the entry of drugs into the skin. This paper prepared the Borneol-physically-modified colchicine ethosome (COL-bpES) and used the prepared Borneol-dioleoyl phosphoethanloamine (BO-DOPE) to prepare Borneol-chemically-modified colchicine ethosome (COL-bcES). Compared to the free colchicine aqueous solution (free COL) and normal colchicine ethosome (COL-ES), the Borneol-modified colchicine ethosome (COL-bES) demonstrated better drug penetration effect, while the particle size of the COL-bcES was lower than that of the COL-bpES. Toxicity, in vitro diffusion, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics are superior to those of COL-bpES, providing a better delivery system for the treatment of small molecule inflammatory drugs

Enhanced permeability of blood-brain barrier and targeting function of brain via Borneol-modified chemically solid lipid nanoparticle.
International Journal of Nanomedicine, 2018Co-Authors: Hui Song, Nan Zhang, He Li, Yujia Zhang, Wensheng ZhengAbstract:Introduction: The incidence of central nervous system disease has increased in recent years. However, the transportation of drug is restricted by the blood-brain barrier, contributing to the poor therapeutic effect in the brain. Therefore, the development of a new brain-targeting drug delivery system has become the hotspot of pharmacy. Materials and methods: Borneol, a simple bicyclic monoterpene extracted from Dryobalanops aromatica, can direct drugs to the upper body parts according to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine. Dioleoyl phosphoethanolamine (DOPE) was chemically modified by Borneol as one of the lipid materials of solid lipid nanoparticle (SLN) in the present study. Results: The Borneol-modified chemically solid lipid nanoparticle (BO-SLN/CM), Borneol-modified physically solid lipid nanoparticle (BO-SLN/PM), and SLN have similar diameter (of about 87 nm) and morphological characteristics. However, BO-SLN/CM has a lower cytotoxicity, higher cell uptake, and better blood-brain barrier permeability compared with BO-SLN/PM and SLN. BO-SLN/CM has a remarkable targeting function to the brain, while BO-SLN/ PM and SLNs are concentrated at the lung. Conclusion: The present study provides an excellent drug delivery carrier, BO-SLN/CM, having the application potential of targeting to the brain and permeating to the blood-brain barrier.
