  • Breakfast consumption augments appetite eating behavior and exploratory markers of sleep quality compared with Skipping Breakfast in healthy young adults

    Abstract:

    Background Observational studies show associations between Breakfast Skipping, reduced satiety, and poor sleep quality; however, intervention studies are lacking. Objective The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of consuming Breakfast compared with Breakfast Skipping on appetitive, hormonal, and neural markers of appetite and satiety; ad libitum food intake; and exploratory measures of sleep health in young adults. Methods Thirteen adults [aged 23.5 ± 0.9 y (mean ± SEMs); body mass index (kg/m2): 23.6 ± 0.6] completed the following randomized crossover-design study. Participants consumed a high-protein Breakfast ("Breakfast"; 340 kcal, 30 g protein, 36 g carbohydrate, 9 g fat) or skipped Breakfast ("Skip") for 7 d/treatment. On day 7, an 8-h clinical testing day was completed including assessments of hunger, fullness, desire to eat, prospective food consumption (PFC), related hormones, food cue-stimulated functional magnetic resonance imaging brain scans, and ad libitum evening food intake. Sleep quantity and quality were assessed with 7-d actigraphy, 7-d sleep diaries, and sleep-related hormones. Results Morning and daily hunger, desire to eat, PFC, and ghrelin decreased, whereas fullness increased after the Breakfast pattern compared with after the Skip pattern (all, P < 0.05). No difference in peptide YY (PYY) concentrations were detected. Hippocampal, parahippocampal, and middle frontal gyrus activations were reduced after the Breakfast pattern compared with the Skip pattern (all, P < 0.01). Although no differences in daily food intake were observed, the Breakfast pattern reduced evening intake of high-carbohydrate and high-fat foods (P < 0.05), whereas evening sugar intake tended to be reduced compared with the Skip pattern (P = 0.085). Although Breakfast led to shorter total sleep time (TST) compared with Skip (P < 0.05), no difference in sleep efficiency (TST/sleep period) was detected. Perceived sleep quality and sleep onset tended to improve after Breakfast compared with after Skip (P = 0.060 and P = 0.07, respectively). Conclusion Breakfast consumption improved appetite, satiety, and diet quality and may support some aspects of sleep health in healthy young adults.     Objective The purpose of this study was to examine whether the daily consumption of normal-protein (NP) vs. high-protein (HP) Breakfast meals improves appetite control, food intake, and body composition in “Breakfast Skipping” young people with overweight/obesity. Methods Fifty-seven adolescents (age: 19 ± 1 years; BMI: 29.7 ± 4.6 kg m−2) completed a 12-week randomized controlled trial in which the adolescents consumed either a 1,464 kJ NP Breakfast (13 g protein) or a HP Breakfast (35 g protein) or continued to skip Breakfast (CON). Pre- and post-study appetite, food intake, body weight, and body composition were assessed. Results Time-by-group interactions (P < 0.05) were detected for body fat mass, daily intake, and perceived hunger. Specifically, HP prevented fat mass gains over the 12 weeks (−0.4 ± 0.5 kg) vs. CON (+1.6 ± 0.9 kg; P = 0.02), whereas NP did not (+0.3 ± 0.5 kg). HP led to reductions in daily intake (−1,724 ± 954 kJ) vs. CON (+1,556 ± 745 kJ; P = 0.03), whereas NP did not (+494 ± 213 kJ). Lastly, only the HP group experienced reductions in daily hunger vs. CON (P < 0.05). However, when directly comparing the HP vs. NP groups, no differences were detected in any outcomes. Conclusions The daily addition of a HP Breakfast improved indices of weight management as illustrated by the prevention of body fat gain, voluntary reductions in daily intake, and reductions in daily hunger in Breakfast Skipping adolescents with overweight/obesity.

Twenty-eight healthy, but overweight, teens (age: 19±1 year; BMI: 29.9±0.8 kg m−2) completed a 12-week randomized parallel-arm study in which the adolescents consumed either a 350 kcal NP Breakfast (13 g protein) or HP Breakfast (35 g protein). Pre- and post-study 24-h blood glucose measures were assessed using continuous glucose monitoring. Although no main effects of time or group were detected, time by group interactions were observed. Post hoc pairwise comparisons assessing the post–pre changes revealed that the daily consumption of the HP Breakfasts tended to reduce the 24-h glucose variability (s.d.) vs NP (−0.17±0.09 vs +0.09±0.10 s.d.; P=0.06) and tended to reduce the time spent above the high glucose limit (−292±118 vs −24±80 min; P=0.09). The consumption of the HP Breakfasts also reduced the 24-h maximal (peak) glucose response (−0.94±0.36 vs +0.30±0.18 mmol l−1; P<0.01) and reduced postprandial glucose fluctuations (−0.88±0.44 vs +0.49±0.34 mmol l−1; P<0.03) vs NP. These data suggest that the daily addition of a HP Breakfast, containing 35 g of high-quality protein, has better efficacy at improving free-living glycemic control compared with a NP Breakfast in overweight/obese, but otherwise healthy, ‘Breakfast Skipping’ adolescents.

    This pilot study examined whether the addition of a normal protein (NP) vs. high protein (HP) Breakfast leads to alterations in food cravings and plasma homovanillic acid (HVA), which is an index of central dopamine production, in overweight/obese ‘Breakfast Skipping’ late-adolescent young women. A randomized crossover design was incorporated in which 20 girls (age 19 ± 1 y; BMI 28.6 ± 0.7 kg/m2) consumed 350 kcal NP (13 g protein) Breakfast meals, 350 kcal HP (35 g protein) Breakfast meals, or continued Breakfast Skipping (BS) for 6 consecutive days/pattern. On day 7 of each pattern, a 4 h testing day was completed including the consumption of Breakfast (or no Breakfast) followed by food craving questionnaires and blood sampling for HVA concentrations throughout the morning. Both Breakfast meals reduced post-meal cravings for sweet and savory foods and increased HVA concentrations vs. BS (all, p < 0.05). Between Breakfast meals, the HP Breakfast tended to elicit greater reductions in post-meal savory cravings vs. NP (p = 0.08) and tended to elicit sustained increases in HVA concentrations prior to lunch vs. NP (p = 0.09). Lastly, HVA concentrations were positively correlated with the protein content at Breakfast (r: 0.340; p < 0.03). Collectively, these findings suggest that the addition of Breakfast reduces post-meal food cravings and increases homovanillic acid concentrations in overweight/obese young people with higher protein versions eliciting greater responses.

    Background: Breakfast Skipping is a common dietary habit practiced among adolescents and is strongly associated with obesity. Objective: The objective was to examine whether a high-protein (HP) compared with a normal-protein (NP) Breakfast leads to daily improvements in appetite, satiety, food motivation and reward, and evening snacking in overweight or obese Breakfast-Skipping girls.     Abstract:

    Objective The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of Skipping Breakfast on body composition and cardiometabolic risk factors. Methods This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating Breakfast Skipping compared with Breakfast consumption. Inclusion criteria included age ≥ 18, intervention duration ≥ 4 weeks, ≥ 7 participants per group, and ≥ 1 body composition measure. Random-effects meta-analyses of the effect of Breakfast Skipping on body composition and cardiometabolic risk factors were performed. Results Seven RCTs (n = 425 participants) with an average duration of 8.6 weeks were included. Compared with Breakfast consumption, Breakfast Skipping significantly reduced body weight (weighted mean difference [WMD] = -0.54 kg [95% CI: -1.05 to -0.03], P = 0.04, I2 = 21.4%). Percent body fat was reported in 5 studies and was not significantly different between Breakfast skippers and consumers. Three studies reported on low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), which was increased in Breakfast skippers as compared with Breakfast consumers (WMD = 9.24 mg/dL [95% CI: 2.18 to 16.30], P = 0.01). Breakfast Skipping did not lead to significant differences in blood pressure, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, triglycerides, C-reactive protein, insulin, fasting glucose, leptin, homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance, or ghrelin. Conclusions Breakfast Skipping may have a modest impact on weight loss and may increase LDL in the short term. Further studies are needed to provide additional insight into the effects of Breakfast Skipping.

    The unhealthy habit of late-night-dinner eating (LNDE) is often observed in adults. Since LNDE can lead to Breakfast Skipping (BS) the next morning, we examined the associations of LNDE and BS with hyperglycemia (HbA1c ≥ 5.7% and/or pharmacotherapy for diabetes), separately and in combination, in 61,364 apparently healthy Japanese adults aged 30–70 years. Although LNDE alone was significantly associated with hyperglycemia, even after adjustment for body mass index, BS alone was not. Our results indicate that hyperglycemia in the general Japanese population is associated with LNDE alone, but not BS alone.

    Skipping Breakfast is considered to be an unhealthy eating habit linked to predispositions to obesity and type 2 diabetes. Because eating dinner late at night can elicit subsequent Breakfast Skipping, we investigated if Skipping Breakfast concomitant with late-night-dinner eating (LNDE) was associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and proteinuria in the general Japanese population. We examined self-reported habitual Breakfast Skipping and LNDE, MetS (modified ATP-III criteria), and proteinuria in a cross-sectional study of 60,800 Japanese adults aged 20–75 years. A total of 14,068 subjects (23.1%) skipped Breakfast, of whom approximately half (52.8%) skipped Breakfast alone (without LNDE). The percentages of subjects who skipped Breakfast showed a J-shaped relationship with body mass index (BMI). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that Skipping Breakfast concomitant with LNDE (n = 6,645) was significantly associated with MetS and proteinuria, even after adjusting for relevant confounders (odds ratio (95% CI), 1.17 (1.08–1.28), P = 0.0003, and 1.37 (1.24–1.52), P < 0.0001, resp.). Skipping Breakfast alone and LNDE alone were not associated with MetS and proteinuria, respectively. In conclusion, habitual Breakfast Skipping concomitant with LNDE may represent poorer eating behavior than Skipping Breakfast alone, associated with MetS, asymptomatic proteinuria, obesity, and low body weight in the general Japanese population.
